2 Confession and Pardon The Reverend Dr. David Smazik Prayer of Confession (unison) God of mercy and love, ours is a world wracked by violence and consumed by a need for power and control. We confess our complacency in this when we think that violence occurs in other communities, but not ours. We confess our desire to sweep such ugliness under the rug. We confess our helplessness in thinking we can do nothing as Christians to bring change. Teach us to enact your wisdom and grace in our relationships. Help us as we strive to be the love and justice of Jesus Christ to those around us; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Dr. Payn departed PCM to be on the faculty of Bucknell University, where he enjoyed a long, successful tenure. We are honored by each person s presence and celebrate the tradition of bell ringing that continues to enrich the lives of generations of children, youth, and adults in our church. 4

6 Help Break the Silence Conference Prevention of Violence Against Women Saturday, October 17 9:00 a.m. 12:00 p.m. In the Sanctuary Speakers from the Jersey Battered Women s Service Domestic Violence Unit Morris County Prosecutor s Office As part of the World Mission of PC(USA), we are called to acknowledge the presence of violence worldwide and to do God's work of reconciliation in cultures of violence including our own. This conference will increase awareness on the presence of violence against women worldwide and specifically within Morris County. Speakers will address how we as individuals with insight can assist in reconciliation. Produced with the support of Presbyterian Women, United Methodist Women, the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, The New York Board of Rabbis and a consortium of Muslim organizations. 6
