1 September 24, 2017 The Fifteenth Sunday after Pentecost * If you are able, please stand. Celebration of Worship I choose to give to this last the same as I give to you...are you envious because I am generous? - Matthew 20:14-15 Prelude Canzonetta, Op. 48 Samuel Barber ( ) Marie Trudeau, oboe * Call to Worship (responsively) Psalm 145 The Reverend Sarah Green Leader: The Lord is gracious and merciful, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love. Leader: The Lord is good to all, and his compassion is over all that he has made. The Lord upholds all who are falling, and raises up all who are bowed down. The Lord is just in all his ways, and kind in all his doings. * Hymn 372 O for a World Azmon Confession and Pardon The Rev. Dr. David Smazik Prayer of Confession (unison) God of abundant goodness, we confess that we want your grace for ourselves but too often turn petty when you offer the same to others. We judge others efforts and motives, deeming them unworthy, while ignoring our own faults. Forgive us, we pray, when we meet your generosity with jealousy. Forgive us when we jockey for priority and privilege fairness over your call to justice and mercy. Teach us instead to practice your ways of abundance, generosity, and justice, so that we may live a life worthy of the gospel made known through your Son, in whose name we pray. Amen.

2 Kyrie: Hymn 575 Lord, Have Mercy upon Us Kyrie Eleison Silent Prayer Assurance of Pardon (responsively) Leader: God extends to us mercy beyond our deserving, grace beyond our ability to earn it. God has granted us the privilege of believing in Christ; therefore we will live as grateful and forgiven people! Thanks be to God! * Response: Hymn 587 Alleluia! Celtic Alleluia * Passing of the Peace A Time for Young Christians Reception of New Members Michelle and Keith Peters; Makayla Amy and Dan Romary; Cecilia, Maximus, Monica, and Nina Alexandra Mead Wendy Doidge Prayer for Illumination (unison) Gracious God, your Word surprises, challenges, upsets, and overturns our way of seeing and thinking. Come and find us today wherever we are, however we are. By the power of your Holy Spirit, help us to blossom and stretch until we see as you see and thereby glimpse the kingdom you are bringing. Amen. First Scripture Reading: Jonah 3:10-4:11 (Old Testament, page 811) Leader: This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Anthem What Shall I Render to the Lord? Peter Tiefenbach The Chancel Choir What shall I render to the Lord for all his benefits to me? I will offer the sacrifice of thanksgiving, and will call on the name of the Lord. I will take the cup of salvation and will call on the name of the Lord. I will pay my vows to the Lord now in the presence of all his people, in the courts of the Lord s house, in the midst of you, O Jerusalem. swear by thyself, that at my death thy Son shall shine as he shines now, and heretofore. 2

3 Second Scripture Reading: Matthew 20:1-16 (New Testament, page 20) Leader: This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Sermon Transformation Principle: Justice & Generosity Rev. Green * Hymn 769 For Everyone Born For Everyone Born Moment for Mission In-Reach Nancy Niemann Greeting/Offering Ourselves and Our Gifts to God (Please sign and pass the friendship pad, found in the pew, to the person next to you. Offering envelopes and prayer request cards are located in the pew pockets for your convenience. Donations may be made online through our website. Cards will be collected with the offering.) Offertory The Heavens Are Telling (from Creation) F. J. Haydn ( ) The Chancel Choir The heavens are telling the glory of God, the wonder of his work displays the firmament: Today that is coming speaks the day, the night that is gone to following night. In all the lands resounds the word, never unperceived, ever understood. * Doxology (Hymn 697) Hendon Take my will and make it thine; it shall be no longer mine. Take my heart, it is thy own; it shall be thy royal throne, it shall be thy royal throne * Prayer of Dedication Prayers of the People The Lord s Prayer Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen. * Hymn 373 O Day of Peace Jerusalem * Benediction 3
