Loeillet ( ), trans. Grandjany La Source Alphonse Hasselmans ( ) Merynda Adams, harp Easter Proclamation (responsively) Leader: Alleluia! Christ is risen! Leader: Leader: He is risen indeed! The tomb is empty, and the promise of new life is here! Christ is risen! He is risen indeed! The Reverend Dr. David J. Smazik Death is no more. New life is among us. Christ is risen! He is risen indeed! Introit The Great Call (from Symphony No. 2) Gustav Mahler ( ) The Chancel Choir Arise, yes, you will arise from the dead, my dust, after a short rest! Eternal life will be given you by Him who called you. * Call to Worship (responsively) The Reverend Sarah Green Leader: Hear the good news! Do not be afraid! 3 Confession and Pardon The Reverend Sarah Green Prayer of Confession (unison) Living God, we confess that we look for the living among the dead. We are foolish and slow to believe the promises of your covenants and of the prophets. We are frightened and full of doubt, even when you stand among us. Forgive us, God of grace. By your spirit, make us witnesses to the wonder of the empty tomb and the fullness of life you promise; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Silent Prayer Assurance of Pardon * Response: Hymn 233, v. 1 The Day of Resurrection Lancashire * The Passing of the Peace At this time the children should move to the front of the sanctuary, near the baptismal font, for the Time for Young Christians. A Time for Young Christians 3 Alexandra Mead Anthem Scatter the Darkness, Break the Gloom arr. Jacob B. Weber The Bel Melodia, Bel Canto, and Tower Choirs Joel Ramseyer, piano Scatter the darkness, break the gloom; sun, reveal an empty tomb shining with joy for all our sorrows. Hope and peace for all tomorrows, life uneclipsed by doubt and dread: Christ has risen from the dead. Bearing the standard from on high as the Lamb of God to die; He who for us, so cruelly treated, lives again our foes defeated! Where is your sting, o death and grave? Christ has shown His strength to save! Banners of triumph, be unfurled! Trumpets, sound throughout the world! Crying and sighs, give way to singing: life from death, our Lord is bringing! Let there begin the jubilee - Christ has gained the victory! Prayer for Illumination (unison) Guide us, O God, by your Word and Spirit, that in your light we may see light, in your truth find freedom, and in your will discover your peace; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. First Scripture Reading Psalm 118: 1-2; (Old Testament, page 534) Leader: This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.
4 Anthem Wieder aufzublüh n (from Symphony No. 2) Gustav Mahler The Chancel Choir To bloom again are you sown. The Lord of the harvest goes and gathers the sheaves, us who have died. Second Scripture Reading Mark 16: 1-8 (New Testament, page 51) Leader: This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Sermon The Ultimate Promise Dr. Smazik * Hymn 264 At the Name of Jesus King s Weston Greeting/Offering Ourselves and Our Gifts to God (Please sign and pass the friendship pad, found in the pew, to the person next to you. Offering envelopes and prayer request cards are located in the pew pockets for your convenience. Cards will be collected with the offering and offered for prayer on the prayer chain and at staff meeting.) Offertory O Glaube (from Symphony No. 2) Gustav Mahler The Chancel Choir O believe, my heart, nothing will be lost to you! Everything is yours that you have desired, yours, what you have loved, what you have struggled for. You were not born in vain, have not lived in vain, have not suffered in vain! What was created must perish, what has perished must rise again. Tremble no more! Prepare yourself to live! O sorrow, all-penetrating! I have been wrested away from you! O Death, all-conquering! Now you are conquered! With wings that I won in the passionate strivings of love I shall mount to the light to which no sight has penetrated. I shall die, so as to live! Arise, yes you will arise from the dead, my heart, in an instant! What you have conquered will bear you to God! * Doxology Lasst uns Erfreuen Praise God from whom all blessings flow, praise God all creatures here below. Sing praises, alleluia! Praise God, creator, God the Son. Praise God the Spirit, three in One. Sing praises, sing praises! Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! Prayers of the People The Lord s Prayer (unison) Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen. 4

8 One of the stainglass windows on the east side of the nave there are three stained glass windows made from Tiffany glass. The third Tiffany window is the Resurrection window, magnificently opalescent, based on the Biblical passage Matthew 28:6 He is not here, He is risen. spoken by an angel to the two Marys at the empty tomb. The scene takes place as the first day of the week was dawning depicted by the rising sun in the right panel. Lilies are pictured symbolizing the Resurrection. In the center and right panels, the palm trees are an excellent and typical example of the Tiffany genius in glass making. The window was given in memory of George F. Stone, a resident of the area when the church was built in
