2 Saint Francis of Assisi Parish May 13, 2018 Thoughts from Fr. Bill Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ, HAPPY EASTER!! Today we gather on the Seventh Sunday of the Easter Season. Today we celebrate Mother s Day, honoring our Mothers, Grandmothers, Godmothers and all who have acted as mothers in our lives. For many of us, the love we have received from our mothers has remained in us and is a wonderful model of the love of God for us! Happy Mother s Day! As we journey through this last week of this holiest of seasons, we hear how important it is that the church be unified in its mission. In Acts, Peter arranges that a twelfth apostle is selected to replace Judas. In his first letter, John notes that God remains in all who love one another. In his Gospel, he recounts Jesus prayer to his Father at the last Supper. Jesus prays that they may be one just as we are one. Let this be our prayer as well! Today is also World Communications Day. Pope Francis has promoted the day this year as Journalism of Peace. He said it promotes understanding and unites us around common values and goals. Propaganda is hardly new, opt for something truly novel: GOOD NEWS! Monday is the Feast of Saint Matthias. His name means gift of Yahweh. He was chosen to take the place of Judas. Tuesday is the Feast of Saint Isidore. He is one of the early lay saints. He and his wife, Maria Torribia, are both saints. They are patrons of the National Catholic Rural Life Conference. Friday is the Feast of Saint John I. He served as one of the seven deacons before being elected Pope in 523. He was sent to Constantinople as a leader of peace. He died of ill-treatment in 526. Saturday is Armed Forces Day. This is a day when we honor ALL those who serve our country. President Kennedy once said, Our service men and women are serving throughout the world as guardians of peace - many of them away from their homes, their friends and their families. They are visible evidence of our determination to meet any threat to the peace with measured strength and high resolve. They are also evidence of a harsh but inescapable truth - that the survival of freedom requires great cost and commitment and great personal sacrifice. Thanks to all our men and women who serve so that we can live in Peace! As we celebrate Pentecost next weekend, I invite you to wear red to Mass! The 2018 DLA will end on Pentecost Sunday, May 20. Prayerfully we extend a very Happy Mother s Day to all of our moms! All Masses this weekend are being offered for all of our mothers, both living and deceased, as a gift of love and gratitude. Blessed is the Mother who lets the Lord be her guiding hand, whose faith brings her family courage, whose wisdom comes from God, and whose children stand and honor her. VOTE this Tuesday, May 15! As Americans we are blessed to live under a representative government which allows us to choose our leaders by casting our votes. Every vote counts! Your prayers and your vote can make a difference. The Christian Mothers meet Wednesday, May 16, at 6:30 pm at the social hall in Footedale. Ladies Spring Luncheon - Sunday, May 20 Women of all ages are invited to attend the Ladies Spring Luncheon on Sunday, May 20, at 1:00 pm in the cafeteria in Masontown. The cost is $5. Tickets will be available at weekend Masses. The deadline to purchase tickets is May 16. No tickets will be sold the day of the event. Question? Please call Kim at Stewardship Jesus is the perfect steward - watching carefully over all who have been entrusted to Him by the Father and then sending them all out into the world in service. May I similarly protect and wisely use the gifts entrusted to me! Stewardship of Treasure Thank you for last Sunday s offertory... $7,880; children $18; loose $425; for a total of $8, envelopes were used of 813 issued. Offertory needed weekly $12,600. We also collected $430 for our Social Ministry Fund. The Catholic Communications Campaign Collection (CCC) will be taken next weekend. This campaign helps to connect people with Christ through the internet, television, radio and print media. Half of the proceeds stay in the diocese to support local communications efforts. The other half is sent to the USCCB to support national and international communications projects. Your support connects people around the world to the gospel message. Congratulations to our newly Confirmed! May 3, 2018 Next Sunday, the Easter season is complete with the celebration of Pentecost, the birthday of the Church. Let us celebrate our birthday by prayer throughout the week for an indwelling of the Holy Spirit in our lives and by celebrating with great joy at Mass next Sunday: Come Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful and kindle in them the fire of your love. Send forth Your Spirit and they shall be created; and you shall renew the face of the earth. Let us pray. Lord, by the light of Your Holy Spirit, You have taught the hearts of your faithful. In the same Spirit, help us to relish what is right and always rejoice in Your consolation. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen. 4 Live the Liturgy Commissioned to Live in the World In today s scriptures we hear two different stories about commissioning. In the Acts of the Apostles, Peter leads the assembly in prayer that the Lord will choose and commission the person to replace Judas among the Twelve. In the Gospel, Jesus prays that His chosen disciples might be consecrated or made holy. Jesus does not ask His Father to keep the disciples separate from the world, but instead sends them out into the world. While we might think that holy people are set apart from the world, we cannot hear today s scriptures without realizing that God s holy, chosen people are commissioned to live in the midst of the world, where they can reveal the love of God that makes the entire world holy. Treasures From Our Tradition In Ireland and the United Kingdom, Mother s Day is over. Mothering Sunday was on the Fourth Sunday of Lent. Long ago, people were freed from work to travel on this day to the parish where they were baptized, their Mother Church. Often, people were reunited with their mothers on this day. Employers would release their workers and servants for this visit. The American celebration, while based on this custom, really has to do with an anti-war movement of mothers in Civil War times. They crusaded for better sanitary conditions for their sons. When President Wilson instituted the first Mother s Day in 1912, it was a day to fly the flag in honor of mothers whose children had died in battle. Knowing the tradition is a good balance to our celebration today. We can enfold in prayer the mothers who have suffered the loss of their children in war. On this final Sunday of the Easter Season, we are taught in the Catechism of the Catholic Church that to catechize means to reveal in the Person of Christ the whole of God s eternal design reaching fulfillment in Christ. Jesus suffered and died for us and now, after rising, is living with us forever. Only He can lead us to the love of God in the spirit and give us a share in the life of the Holy Trinity. The goal of prayer is really rather simple. By prayer we can deepen our love and desire for God and increase our knowledge and understanding of God s unconditional love for us. Prayer is not about acquiring this or that or convincing God to act on our behalf. Prayer is the way we begin the process of change, of coming to see as God sees and realize that God s presence permeates all God has created. If we strive to develop this life of prayer, then Jesus naturally will become our way, our truth and our life. We can then live in the world as He would live in the world.
