Bill Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ, Welcome to the final Sunday of the Church Year as we celebrate Jesus Christ, King of the Universe. I hope you all had a nice Thanksgiving!! Today we recognize that Jesus Christ should reign in our lives, guiding our thoughts, our decisions and our conduct. This Feast began in 1925, in the aftermath of the Great War and a rise in nationalism, which served to divide people and cultures. Every instance of bad leadership reinforces the vital importance of good leaders. In church and in government, at work and at home, we need people of wisdom and vision to take us into the future. Leaders must lead, not merely form a platform or agenda, but with a profound respect for the common good and an unshakable principle. Championing the common good makes families more holy, workplaces more just, societies more civil and governments more noble. What kind of world do we want to live in? At what kind of authority will we bend our knees? Friday is the Feast of Saint Andrew, patron saint of Scotland. He was a missionary, said to have traveled widely before being martyred on a cross in the shape of an X. Because of the belief that Andrew preached in Scotland, the Scottish put his cross on their flag. While few of us will be remembered on national flags, all of us can be remembered as people who did our best to introduce others to the healing message about Jesus. I congratulate the young people who will celebrate their CONFIRMATION on Saturday, December 1, at Saint Therese. December 1 st is World AIDS Day. Loving God, comfort your sons and daughters who live with AIDS. Spread over us all the blanket of love and mercy. Open our hearts to weep with the grieving and walk with the lonely. Help us build a world in which no one dies alone and where everyone is wanted and loved. Amen. Next weekend we begin the season of Advent. You are invited to pick up a Little Blue Book and key chain tag for Advent. Also please take a tag from the Giving Trees. The Advent Season is short this year so make the most of it! What in fact is Christ s kingdom? It is simply those who believe in Him. Everyone who is born in Christ becomes the kingdom which is no longer in the world. (Saint Augustine) Question of the Week: In what way is Jesus king of my life? How do I live in this world while living for God s kingdom? Our Psalm Response this week, The Lord is king; he is robed in majesty, reminds us that God is everlasting and God s reign is without end. Here we go, Steelers, here we go! Peace, Fr. 3 Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe November 25, 2018 Christ is King On the final Sunday of the liturgical year, we celebrate the Feast of Christ the King. It s easy to understand today s scriptures as events that happened long ago and far away, or predictions that will come true somewhere, some day - but they invite us to claim Christ as our King here and now. Jesus words to Pilate in the Gospel remind us that His kingdom transcends time and place and the prophecies from Daniel and Revelation give us reason to be faithful to Christ our King right here and right now. By concluding the year with this feast we are proclaiming our faith that Jesus Christ is the one and only King over all seasons, all peoples and all of creation. No matter what nation we belong to or what language we speak, He has made us into a kingdom - one people united in love and peace for all eternity. Jesus Christ is the faithful witness, the firstborn of the dead and ruler of the kings of the earth. - Revelation 1:5 Sacred Steps Sacramental Celebrations at Saint Francis of Assisi Parish Parish Sympathy is expressed to the families of Silvio Urani, Jr. who was buried Wednesday, November 14; Irene (Kalfut) Andrasy who was buried Friday, November 16. Parish Sympathy is expressed to the family of Elizabeth Ann (Chernitsky) Hudak, mother of William Hudak, who was buried Monday, November 12. May God grant her eternal life and comfort her family. Adoration takes place following the 8:00 am Mass. Stewardship Today s second reading reminds us that the sacrifice of Christ frees us from sin and makes us a royal nation of priests in the service of God. How am I using my gifts to serve God and others? Stewardship of Treasure Thank you for the offertory of November 12: $8,450; children $22; loose $392; for a total of $8, envelopes were used of 816 issued. Offertory needed weekly $12,600. We also collected $467 for the Retirement for Religious Appeal. The Giving Tree - All who took tags from The Giving Tree are reminded to purchase the appropriate gift, affix the tag and return it to the church (unwrapped) the weekend of December 8/9. Thank you! Neighboring Events Light Up Night - New Salem Neighborhood Watch - Saturday, December 1, at the Corner lot of Main & Mill Streets. Activities begin with the arrival of Santa at 6pm, the lighting of the tree and singing of carols. Following the festivities at the tree, join us at the Meeting Place on Main Street for refreshments; talk with and receive a small gift from Santa, chances to win baskets and much more. Please bring a non-perishable food item for the local food bank! (Please note the change of location.) Masontown Church Walk Tour and Santa on the Square - Sunday, December 2, beginning at 2:30 pm with the Church Walk Tour. Sponsored by Masontown Matters, the event begins and ends at the Masontown Borough Building. After the walking tour, Santa will arrive. There will be caroling, carriage rides, cookies and hot chocolate. Please join us! Christmas of Remembrance Ceremony - 5:00 pm Sunday, December 2, at the John S. Maykuth Jr. Funeral Home, for families who lost a loved one during the past year. This ceremony is dedicated to help alleviate the pain experienced during the holidays after such a loss. Please join John and Susie in sharing the memory of our loved ones, the comfort & peace of the Christmas Season. The Polish Heritage Club invites you to relive the old tradition of an authentic Polish Wigilia or Christmas Eve dinner. Learn the meaning of customs, traditions and folklore of Old Poland. 4 The season of ADVENT begins next weekend and resets the clocks and calendars of Christian worship. It summons us to the beginning. Advent is both a beginning and an end, an alpha and an omega of the Church s year of grace. Advent is the time to pause, the time to remember and celebrate that we are a people who wait. As watch-keepers for the dawn, as a woman with child, as Israel for the Messiah, Christians await the coming of Jesus in glory, in the fullness of time. This festival of the Winter Solstice, this feast of Christ does more than lead us from one year to another. In the power of Christ, Advent and Christmastime lead us from time to eternity. Come, Lord Jesus! Little Blue Books for Advent and Christmas are available at the church entrances. The offering is $1.00. The book is comprised of six-minute reflections on the Advent/Christmas season based on the weekday Gospels. The left-hand page contains a variety of thoughts about the Advent and Christmas seasons, the feast of the day, or various traditions and customs. Mass intentions will not be taken over the phone or after Mass. Please send or drop them off to us in writing. 2. Only five Masses per year may be scheduled by any one person. Only two of these may be scheduled on a weekend. 3. No Mass intentions will be taken for Easter weekend, Mother s Day, Father s Day, Thanksgiving Day and Christmas. 4. If there are any Mass intentions for your loved ones here (from funerals), we already scheduled a Mass on or near the anniversary date of death. 5. Masses must be paid for at the time of scheduling. Life is constantly changing. While this can be exciting on one hand, change also presents challenges. We live in an age of relativism where people can pick and choose the truths that suit them and build their own system of beliefs. While humans certainly have the freedom to choose, losing sight of long-standing universal truths is not such a healthy course. Jesus Christ our King is our universal truth! He is the God who is nonnegotiable, our non-option! In Christ, we know what truth is. He alone points us to God, our true selves, our proper relationships with one another and the world in which we live. Christ directs us to the poor and vulnerable and teaches us what God s kingdom is meant to be. Christ is the king who serves others. He gets dirty. He ascends the throne of the cross. We are called to do the same. The month of December is dedicated to the Immaculate Conception of Mary Conceived without original sin, Mary became a fitting dwelling for the incarnation of God the Son and that, preserved from the stain of all sin, the faithful may be cleansed through her intercession. Feast of the Immaculate Conception On Saturday, December 8, we celebrate the feast of the Immaculate Conception - God prepared Mary to be the mother of Jesus by preserving her from original sin. This is a day to celebrate God s great love for Mary and for all of us in His power to save us from sin. Masses for this Holy Day of Obligation will be Friday, December 7-5:00 pm at both worship sites Saturday, December 8-8:00 am in Masontown and 10:00 am in Footedale Please note: The 4:00 pm Mass on Saturday, December 8, does not fulfill the Holy Day Obligation, it is the Vigil Mass for the First Sunday of Advent.
