2 Saint Francis of Assisi Parish September 3, 2017 Thoughts from Fr. Bill Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ, Welcome to September! I welcome ALL to Festival Weekend! September is marked with wonderful celebrations! A month to surf the seasons of real life as they come, and to grow in faith as we do! It must have stung Peter to have Jesus call him Satan, especially because Jesus had already chosen him to be the foundation rock of His community of believers. Peter, his bullheadedness, seems a good stand-in for many of us, taking the heat for what we ourselves might have done or said. Here he is merely expressing his care for Jesus by saying, as any of us would do to someone we love, God forbid that any tragedy should fall upon you. Yet Jesus reprimands him because Peter cannot see beyond his desire to protect his Lord from the terrible fate Jesus foresees. Peter does not yet see how great a cost a wondrous love will pay to accomplish good. Remember, by God s standard no price is too high! Labor Day is Monday. God our Creator, we are the work of Your hands. Guide us in our work, that we may do it, not for self alone, but for the common good. Make us alert to injustice, ready to stand in solidarity, that there may be dignity for all in labor and in labor s reward. Grant this through Christ our Lord. The death of Mother Teresa is celebrated on Tuesday, September 5. She died in In 1946 she dedicated her life to serving the poorest of the poor in Calcutta and founded the Missionaries of Charity in The Blessed Virgin Mary s Birthday is celebrated Friday, September 8. The birthday of the Blessed Virgin Mary is an exquisite exception, since her soul was the space from which God was able to gain access into humanity. (Pope Benedict XVI) Today God welcomes on earth the holy throne which He had prepared for Himself. He who established the heavens in wisdom had fashioned a living heaven. (Byzantine Liturgy) Saint Peter Claver is celebrated Friday. He once said, Seek God in all things, and we shall always find God by our side. A quote from Pope Francis Laudato Si, On Care For Our Common Home: Ecological education can take place in a variety of settings: at school, in families, in the media, in catechesis and elsewhere. Good education plants seeds when we are young and these continue to bear fruit throughout life. Here, though, I would stress the great importance of the family, which is the place in which life - the gift of God - can be properly welcomed and protected against the many attacks to which it is exposed and can develop in accordance with what constitutes authentic human growth. Laudato Si, 213 Question of the Week: Jesus bids me deny myself before taking up your cross and following. What radical shift of values, reordering of priorities, refocusing of vision must take place in my heart as discipleship s non-negotiable Step Number 1? Our Psalm Response this week, My soul is thirsting for you, O Lord my God, reminds us that our need for God is all-consuming and its satisfaction is like a banquet. Peace, Fr. Bill Let s Go Bucs! Trying to live a full life in the service of the Lord, failing frequently and falling on the mercy of God each time.

The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) is the process by which one becomes a member of our Catholic Faith. The process not only teaches the Doctrine of the Church but also explores its practices. The first step is the Period of Inquiry and is a time for searching, questioning, discussing and reflecting. No decision is required during this period. The RCIA is designed for those who have never been baptized, those who have no church to call their own, Catholics who have been baptized but have not received Confirmation or Eucharist, those who would like to come into full communion with the church, Catholics who have strayed from their faith but would now like to be reconnected. Gerry Sunday Regional Mass: 5:30 pm at Saints Cyril & Methodius Church, Fairchance Monday is Labor Day, a day to remember that our work forms a bond and a channel of mutual service and charity between the members of the human family; that by our labor, we can share in the work of perfecting God s creation. Over the course of our lives, we spend more time working than we do at any other activity. May Saint Joseph, patron of workers, bless all who labor for the good of humanity and for the honor of God. The Parish Office will be closed on Labor Day. Inspiration for the Week Even as people of faith we often find ourselves reasoning our way through our trials and difficulties. It makes a huge difference using our own eyes and not those of God. God knows that we live in an imperfect world filled with suffering, pain, difficulties, disappointments, and death; all part of the mix. Jesus shows us by example that when we encounter hardships, God transforms them into something better. We do not need to despair. God gives us hope. When we view our lives through God s eyes and not our own this gift of hope and transformation becomes very apparent. We must lose our lives in order to gain them. Peace begins with a smile. - St. Teresa of Calcutta Mass Readings for the Week Ahead Monday: 1 Thes 4:13-18; Lk 4:16-30 Tuesday: 1 Thes 5:1-6, 9-11; Lk 4:31-37 Wednesday: Col 1:1-8; Lk 4:38-44 Thursday: Col 1:9-14; Lk 5:1-11 Friday: Mi 5:1-4; Mt 1:1-23 Saturday: Col 1:21-23; Lk 6:1-5 Next Sunday: Ez 33:7-9; Rom 13:8-10; Mt 18:15-20 Memorial Candles burn this week in loving memory of or for the special intention of: Sanctuary - Paul Krokus Jr. & daughter, Mariska requested by Paul & Irene Blessed Mother - Helen Ozanick requested by Judy & Rob Carpeal & Family Saint Joseph - Robert Carpeal requested by Judy & Rob Carpeal & Family Saint Anthony - Special Intentions of Joanne & family requested by sister, Marie
