2 Saint Francis of Assisi Parish April 15, 2018 Thoughts from Fr. Bill Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ, HAPPY EASTER!! Today we celebrate the Third Sunday of Easter! Yes, the Easter season continues for many weeks. One thing Jesus never could stomach is a hypocrite. In the stories, He always prefers sincere sinners to religious fakers. It s easy to slip into the role of a synthetic disciple without even noticing. Our religious routines - prayer, Mass attendance, lip-synched proper responses to moral issues - can go on auto-pilot. Meanwhile, self-congratulations, nasty judgments, self-improvement and the unwillingness to forgive turn our hearts to stone under the surface. How we love is far more important than how we look. The Risen Christ stands in our midst and asks, Why are you troubled? and Why do questions arise in your hearts? Look at my hands and my feet, that it is I myself. This is the Lord s commandment to us. The way we may be sure that we know him is to keep His commandments. When we are in distress, we beg with the Psalmist, Let the light of your countenance shine upon us! God has answered that prayer, for God raised the author of life from the dead. The lord will hear and have pity. Touch and see Remember to prepare your income taxes! This Tuesday is the deadline!!!! Saturday is the Feast of Saint Anselm of Canterbury. His motto was Faith seeking understanding. He believed that God is that than which nothing greater can be conceived. On his feast day, we ask what steps can we take to deepen our knowledge of God. Faith seeks understanding. I do not seek to understand that I may believe, but I believe in order to understand. Our Spring Parish Dinner will take place on Tuesday, April 24, in Footedale at 6:00 pm. If you are going to attend, please sign up on the sheets located near the doors of the church. We pray for Father Alvin who will be going home to the Philippines for a month-long visit from April 17 to May 17. Monsignor Statnick will be filling in for Father Alvin while he is away. We also congratulate Fr. Medil Aseo, Parochial Vicar from Kittanning/ Yatesboro who has been named a Bishop by Pope Francis. I thank you for your generous Easter gift to SFOA. The total amount for Easter this year is $29,307. May God bless you for your generosity! A quote from Pope Francis document, Amoris Laetitia: The tensions created by an overly individualistic culture, caught up with possessions and pleasures, leads to intolerance and hostility in families. The Joy of Love. (Amoris Laetitia, 8) Question of the Week: How can I be a witness? How do I explain what the presence of Jesus in my life means? Our Psalm Response this week, Lord let your face shine on us, reminds us that the Lord works wonders for those who are faithful Let s Go Pens! Peace, Fr. Bill Let s Go Bucs! Trying to live a full life in the service of the Lord, failing frequently and falling on the mercy of God each time.
3 Third Sunday of Easter April 15, 2018 Believing in Jesus Christ Throughout the Easter season, all three of the Sunday readings are taken from the New Testament - the Christian scriptures. Together they explore what it means to believe in Jesus as the Christ, the One who fulfilled the prophecies of the Jewish scriptures. Today s selections refer to our human weakness, yet they emphasize the forgiveness and peace that are available to those who put their faith in Jesus Christ the righteous one. In the Acts of the Apostles, Saint Peter invites everyone to repent, therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be wiped away. The First Letter of John calls Jesus Christ expiation for our sins. Finally, in the Gospel, Jesus greets the disciples with Peace and urges them to preach repentance for the forgiveness of sins. Faith furnishes prayer with wings, without which it cannot soar to Heaven. - St. John Climacus Faith Formation at Saint Francis of Assisi Today 10-11:15 am - Masontown, St. Benedict Learning Center 10:30-11:45 am - Footedale, Church basement The Golden Group will meet at 11:30 am on Wednesday, April 18, at the social hall in Footedale. You make God s love real and present to the world by your words and actions. Stewardship The disciples in today s Gospel came to know Jesus in the breaking of the bread. 4 Third Sunday of Easter The traditional opening of the fishing season in many places takes place the middle of April to the middle of May. Fishermen anxiously wait for the opportunity to cast their lines into open water. When Jesus appeared to His disciples after His resurrection, one of the things that He did was to eat fish in their presence. For the Gospel writers, this is a way of indicating that the resurrected body is also a human body. The risen Lord is not a ghost; He is bodily raised from the dead! This truth is at the core of our faith. As Saint Peter states in the first reading today, God raised him from the dead; of this we are witnesses. We are witnesses of that same truth today. As Christians we have our own story to tell. It is a story about the One who conquered sin and death through His own death and resurrection. Through our baptism, we are raised to new life by the Author of Life. Like Saint Peter, who was himself a fisherman, we are called to testify to this truth in the world. Good Citizenship When questioned about paying taxes, Jesus said: Repay to Caesar what belongs to Caesar and to God what belongs to God. Being part of a community isn t always easy and being active members of civil society includes responsibilities we don t always prefer. When Tax Day comes around, we can suffer through or we can choose to offer up our frustrations as intercession. If you disagree with the decisions of civil leaders, pray for them! If the state and federal government fund causes you support, thank God! While Jesus acknowledges that we do not belong to the world, we nonetheless are called into it. Through our words, actions and prayers, we are called to transform the world according to God s plan. Sacred Steps Sacramental Celebrations at Saint Francis of Assisi Parish Parish Sympathy is expressed to the families of Maryann (Tandarich) Burke who was buried Thursday, April 12; Florence Reparsky who was buried Saturday, April 14. Life can easily get the best of us. Anxiety, worry, doubt and uneasiness are just some of the things that can trouble our hearts. Often we are troubled about temporal things. Sometimes our faith troubles us and we wonder where God may be. If we allow Jesus to open our minds so we can understand the Scriptures and the significance of His passion, death and resurrection, we can begin to trust that God s plan includes something much more than the current concern of our minds. Jesus can then become a light of revelation who helps us keep our lives in perspective and persevere. God sends no churches from the skies, out of our hearts they must arise. - Anonymous Mass Readings for the Week Ahead Monday: Acts 6:8-15; Jn 6:22-29 Tuesday: Acts 7:51-8:1a; Jn 6:30-35 Wednesday: Acts 8:1b-8; Jn 6:35-40 Thursday: Acts 8:26-40; Jn 6:44-51 Friday: Acts 9:1-20; Jn 6:52-59 Saturday: Acts 9:31-42; Jn 6:60-69 Next Sunday: Acts 4:8-12; 1 Jn 3:1-2; Jn 10:11-18 Please Note: Change in Daily Mass Schedule During Father Alvin s absence (beginning Monday, April 16) daily Mass will be held as follows: Monday and Wednesday in Footedale Tuesday and Friday in Masontown Memorial Candles burn this week in loving memory of or for the special intention of: Blessed Mother - Mike & Ann Bernot requested by children & grandchildren Saint Joseph - Safe trip for Fr.
