1 The Grace Vine June 2013 Fathers (and Mothers) and Friends By Bette Brooks They lived not only in ages past; there are hundreds of thousands still. The world is bright with the joyous saints who love to do Jesus' will. Angelo Giuseppe Roncalli (Pope John XXIII, Bishop of Rome) 3 June Born November 25, 1881, Angelo Roncalli was the first son and fourth child of thirteen born to Giovanni Roncalli and his wife Marianna. They were sharecroppers living in Sotto il Monte, a small country village in the Bergamo district of Lombardy in Italy. He attended local schools, went to university, and earned his doctorate in theology in He was ordained priest and the following year became secretary for the new Bishop of Bergamo. During World War I, he was drafted into the Royal Italian Army and served as a medical corps stretcher-bearer and chaplain. Upon discharge, he became spiritual director of the seminary in Bergamo. In 1921, he was appointed Italian president of the Society for the Propagation of the Faith and 4 years later the Apostolic Visitor to Bulgaria and titular bishop of Areopolis, Greece. Roncalli chose his episcopal motto to be Obedience and Peace. In 1935, Roncalli was made Apostolic Delegate to Turkey and Greece, and he used the office to help the Jewish underground save thousands of refugees in Europe. Many Jews consider him to be a Righteous Gentile for these acts. In 1944, the Pope named him Apostolic Nuncio to France where he had to negotiate the retirement of bishops who had collaborated with the Nazis. In 1953, he was appointed Patriarch of Venice and raised in rank to Cardinal-Priest of Santa Prisca. So pleased was the French president Vincent Auriol (and as a sign of his esteem) that he claimed the ancient privilege possessed by French kings and bestowed the red biretta on Roncalli at a ceremony in the Elysee Palace. In 1953, Pope Pius XII died. Roncalli, who had a return train ticket to Venice in his wallet, was elected Pope, to his great surprise, and chose to be called Pope John XXIII. Because of his age, the new pope was viewed by many as a caretaker or stop-gap pope. He did not. Many of his first actions as pope spoke to the past with hope for the future: the elimination of the description of the Jews as perfidious in the Good Friday liturgy; a confession for the Church of the sin of anti-semitism through the ages. He called an ecumenical council (Second Vatican Council) to reconsider many of the Church s traditions. As his successor stated (although then the Bishop of Venice), this holy old boy doesn t realize what a hornet s nest he s stirring up! From this council came changes that reshaped the face of Catholicism: a comprehensively revised liturgy, a stronger emphasis on ecumenism, and a new approach to the world. However, Pope John XXIII did not live to see its conclusion. Pope John XXIII was diagnosed with stomach cancer in September However, he did not slow down. He offered to mediate between President Kennedy and Nikita Khruschev during the Cuban Missile Crisis. He negotiated the raised status of Saint Thomas Aquinas University in Vatican City to the Pontifical University of St. Thomas Aquinas. The pope died June 3, 1963, in the papal apartments. Prayer: Lord of all truth and peace, you raised up your bishop John to be servant of the servants of God and gave him wisdom to call for the work of renewing your Church: Grant that, following his example, we may reach out to other Christians to clasp them with the love of your Son, and labor throughout the nations of the world to kindle a desire for justice and peace; through Jesus Christ, who is alive and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

They have been doing this for a few years and last year sent over 15,000 books at their own expense. They are looking for books of the following types Detective & Mystery, Fantasy & Science Fiction, Military and Westerns (they want paperbacks for size, lightweight, and portability). They are also looking for the names and unit numbers of troops stationed in Iraq and Afghanistan. The specific information they would like includes the name of the individual, the address, and the number of men and women in their unit. They are no longer to send books or packages to any soldier or similar as they were in the past, so the name and address information is critical for them to reach the men and women who are serving over there. Steve and Susan Merrill will bring the books donated by Grace Church members to Mr. Monroe so that he and his colleagues can send them to the troops. We know that our son really appreciated things like this when he was stationed in Iraq.

4 Did You Know?... Nancy & Fred Lundgren spent time in Texas with their son Bill and the granddaughters Jean and Susie. It was Susie s birthday and they had a party for 8 little girls. What fun. They also took bunk beds to Texas for the girls and then they brought back a bed for their daughter here in Ohio. Fred was wondering if there will ever be a time when they won t be hauling things back and forth from Texas to Ohio? I think that s what you do Fred!! Alexandra Worblewski and David Miller attended a square dancing convention in Columbus last month and had a wonderful time. They met square dancing The only gift Judy Canan wanted for her birthday was to have all her family join her in church. And they all came (all but David he was preaching at his own church in New Jersey). But it was a proud mom who sat with her children and their spouses on that Sunday morning The Poker Boys played last month at the home of Maynard Evans. They always have a great time and the proceeds went to the Youth Group. They were joined by Maynard s brother-in-law Neil who came down from Michigan and Neil had a wonderful time and said he might be back next month. Hope to see him there Prayers do get answered; Carolyn Englert s daughter Jennifer has been missing for twenty years and on one late Saturday night Carolyn finally got a phone call from Jennifer saying she s well and in Florida. They have been keeping in touch with one another ever since. Thanks be to God!!... Chris Stickle and her daughters Nikki and Sam walked in the Walk for the Cure, as part of the Am. Cancer Society program. Grace Church was the only church in our community that was included as part of their giving program A special thanks to Lane and Wilda Autry, Loretta Reigelman and Chris Stickle for the luncheon served on May 5th. Everyone enjoyed the chili, toasted cheese sandwiches, and tomato and potato soup. And Loretta s cakes & ice cream with all the toppings were a HUGE success. Just ask Maynard and Bill about that Our treasurer Marcia Splinter spent four hours of her Sunday here at Grace Church for the church audit. Thanks Marcia Thanks to Mary Ann Switz for all her assistance to the church secretary with the computer The new aprons the Sit and Stitch made were used for the first time at the family breakfast given by the hospitality committee on Mother s day. Thanks to the ladies who sewed and especially Alice Boydell who did all the embroidery on her wonderful sewing machine. She said each apron took 45 minutes to complete Once again the Hospitality committee, led by Nancy Ervin, had a fabulous Family s Day breakfast for the congregation on May 12th. Many thanks to those who made the casseroles: Kay Canan, Mary Jean McDonald, Irene Machisko, Nancy Ervin, and Marsha Snyder. Loretta Reigelman. Barb Popiel and Shirley Johnson supplied the muffins and biscuits and Carolyn Englert brought the juices. All those named above helped in the kitchen and served. John McDonald washed the dishes and Jim Ervin served coffee, and Mike and Shirley Johnson cleaned up. Shirley Johnson took some wonderful pictures of the breakfast check them out in the parish hall The Mother s Day flower sale went very well this year thanks to Marcia Splinter who took a days vacation from her job to coordinate everything. And I do mean everything. She was there with John McDonald, Steve Merrill, and Mike Johnson when the flowers were picked up. She was there Friday evening when Goldie Shriver, Mechele Novak, Cathy Mansor, and Marsha Snyder decorated the plants. And she was there all day Saturday at the sale and assisted Roberta O Keefe, John & Mary Jean McDonald, Amir & Stephanie Amiruzzaman, Jim Ervin, Sue Ahrens, Alice Boydell, Barb Popiel, Irene Machisko, Rev. Carol and Judy Watkins. Thank you Chris and Nikki Stickle for representing Grace Church at Loaves and Fishes. You do a wonderful job and we really appreciate it You can tell it s spring and the children are out playing Emily Scibelli began the season with a broken elbow and is sporting a really pretty pick cast. Hope you re on the mend soon, Emily Congratulations to our high school graduates Megan Worthen and Nikki Stickle.
