1 Christ Episcopal Church 401 West Main Street Marion, Virginia (276) Dear Friends in Christ, It has been a year since I first began as the priest here at Christ Episcopal in Marion and it has been an adventure. I ve come to know and become a part of our church family. I am surprised and pleased with the depth and quality of the people I have met. And I am humbled that they call me friend and priest. I continue to get to know the folks and geography of Smyth County. I truly feel that I am a citizen of Southwest Virginia, knowing Tazewell, Washington, Smyth, and the coalfield counties as I do. Thank you for your hospitality in welcoming Keith and I to the church. There are several groups that we have within our church which are seldom recognized for the ministries that they perform. They are the choir, the acolytes, the Altar Guild and the ushers. We can do our services without music but I m sure that you all would agree that the hymns and the choir which sings them so well are very important to what we experience each Sunday. Someone once said that singing hymns is like praying twice. Singing is good for our souls. We are encouraged to sing to the Lord. The members of our choir share their gifts with us each week and by doing so, our spiritual lives are enhanced. I cannot go on without acknowledging our wonderful organist, John Britton and his great substitute, Duane Cregger, both of whom have an exceptional knowledge of music and a superb ability to play. This past week our choir took their gifts on the road when they visited Tommye Kelly at her cabin. They were joined by Dean Woodard and his daughter Ellen Jim and Faire Patterson s son in law and granddaughter. (We hope that Dean and El will be with us lots more going forward, as they sing like angels.) This visit was joyful, caring, loving, and was uplifting for all. Christ Church is so lucky to have seven acolytes who are willing to give of their time to serve their church. They carry the crosses, torches, flags and, on occasion, the dove. They distribute and receive the collection plates, and help me with the water, wine, and bread. They handle the symbols of our faith with care and love. They do training and they do all this respectfully. And here is the kicker they are between the ages of ten and fourteen! I don t know about you, but I m seeing leadership for our church going forward. The Altar Guild teams, under the leadership of Rita Copenhaver, get the church and the altar ready for each service and special occasions. They take care of the brass, silver, flowers, linens and hangings. They make sure that the wine and bread and all the supplies are always there. I encourage you to notice what they do and how it changes from week to week and season to season. They do this lovingly and carefully because they love their church. Major and Genevieve Bowen have as their ministry the ushering and greeting of our church family and guests. They are the face of our church to all who come through the doors. They make sure that everyone has a bulletin and are properly greeted. They bring up the elements and oversee the collection. Major counts all the folks and makes sure that the numbers are recorded. They look after the church and our church family with love. It is a true ministry. What all these people do is ministry, and I can t thank them enough. They love their church and their God. When you see them next, thank them for giving of their time and talents to enhance our spiritual lives. In peace, Emily+

Because of the severe tornados in Oklahoma, we also took up another collection of $ for Episcopal Relief and Development. In June we learned that hospice has now been called in for Tommye Kelly. 3 Pool Party! Our kids are invited to the Shults pool right after church on Sunday, June 9 th! Bring your bathing suit and a towel!! Rain Date, June 16 th Join us for our first Family Movie Night on Monday, June 24 th, at 8:00 PM. Each family is asked to bring something to sit on and your favorite drinks. We ll meet behind the church, weather permitting (inside if it rains). Farewell Picnic for Neff and Dorothy Powell You are invited to attend a farewell picnic for Neff and Dorothy Powell from 11 am to 2 pm at Hemlock Haven at Hungry Mother State Park on June 22 nd. A barbeque lunch is being catered (by Emily s family), presentations will be made, and a fun-filled afternoon is promised. This is an opportunity for you to celebrate the Powell s years in the diocese and wish them well in their retirement. If you plan to attend, please sign the form on the table at the back of the church and we will register you. Deadline to register is Sunday, June 9 th. Christ Church Picnic The church family is invited to a picnic at the home of Emily and Keith Edmondson on Saturday, June 29 th, at 5:00 PM. Hamburgers, hot dogs, and ice cream will be provided. Bring your favorite side dish for the meal and toppings for make your own ice cream sundaes for dessert! Bring a fishing pole, too!! Directions will be available at church on Sundays. Carpooling from the church is recommended.

Your family can have theirs taken on one of these days, or by special appointment at some other time. Everyone is encouraged to have a new picture taken this year.
