2 OFFICE OF THE BISHOP April 4, 2018 Dear Brothers, Greetings and Easter peace! I hope that the Triduum and Easter celebrations were filled with joy and blessings for you and your parishioners. The Easter season is a good time for us to think about the mission work of the Church. During this season we will hear about the wondrous works the apostles were able to carry on after the Resurrection. In Evangelii Gaudium, Pope Francis reminds us to go forth from our own comfort zone in order to reach all the peripheries in need of the light of the Gospel (Evangelli Gaudium, 20). Two years ago, the Missionary Cooperative plan was discussed at the presbyteral council. I expressed my desire that each parish host a missionary every year to share their message and ministry to the people of our diocese. It was decided at that time, due to our pastoral planning process, that we would wait until we had gone through the major transitions to our parish structures. For the most part, this has taken place. I have asked Father Lingle, Director of the Propagation of Faith for our diocese, to assign a mission cooperative speaker for every parish group in the Diocese of Sioux City this year. All the normal rules and expectations of the past are still in place. During the next month, you will receive information from the mission office regarding the group assigned to your parishes. Please note that some of the missionary speakers will be women religious. If the speaker is not a priest or deacon, please have them address your congregations after the Prayer after Communion at the end of Mass. Many of our parishes support a sister parish in another part of the world. The Mission Cooperative is in addition to any other mission work that your parish undertakes. I thank you for your generosity in advancing the mission work of the Church. Your brother in Christ, Most Reverend R. Walker Nickless Bishop of Sioux City DIOCESE OF SIOUX CITY 1821 JACKSON STREET SIOUX CITY, IOWA (712) FAX: (712)

3 DIOCESE OF SIOUX CITY Director of Committee for the Continuing Formation of Priests Rev. Shane A. Deman 4 April 2018 Dear Brother Priests and Deacons, This is a reminder to please confirm your attendance or absence to the Thursday, April 19, 2018, Presbyterate Day, scheduled at St. Mary Center in Storm Lake. Dr. Holdiman will also share with us the latest opportunities available in Hospice and Palliative Care programs, helping us understand what care options are available for our parishioners. Later in the afternoon, in light of recent national tragedies, Mark Prosser and his staff on the Storm Lake Police Force will provide us tips and strategies on how to prepare for emergency situations that could develop on our Catholic properties. Brother Priests, please remember that our attendance is expected; if unable to do so, please inform one of the Vicars General. Brother Deacons are welcome to attend. 4 Above is the link on Catholicglobe.org for information on World Youth Day. It will be here before you know it! The Catholic Globe is collaborating with Canterbury Pilgrimages on this trip. Posters and brochures should be on display in our churches. Here is the direct link for reservations: Those of you who have participated in agency tours may be aware that for every 10 pilgrims signed up, one complimentary tour is offered. You may see that as a perk to be involved in this. COST: The initial deposit of $450 is due with registration. The balance is due Nov. 7. A $3,000-plus price tag might be a lot for a young person, so fundraising may be needed. Also, consider asking the local Knights of Columbus or Catholic Daughters or other service group to assist with offsetting the cost. Grandparents might see value in this and could help. WHY GO: According to Father Patrick Behm of Fort Dodge, who attended World Youth Day in Poland in 2016, the best part of attending World Youth Day has been seeing the universality of the Catholic Church. It always amazes me that people from all over the world can be brought together by the common bond of being united in the Body of Christ. WHO CAN GO: Anyone, but to attend WYD activities, the recommended ages are CHAPERONES: Father David Esquiliano is the chaplain for the trip but not a chaperone. Additionally, the tour company provides a guide, but not a chaperone. Anyone under the age of 18 will need a chaperone. We will have those in place once registrations start to come in. INFORMATION MEETING: I would be willing to host an informational meeting in the next two months at a convenient site to answer questions. Just let me know. Feel free to contact me with suggestions on promoting the pilgrimage. We are very excited to provide this opportunity. We ask your prayers as we go forth. Sincerely, Joanne Fox Managing Editor joannef@scdiocese.org (712)

5 A message from Bishop Walker Nickless... I am pleased that Father David Esquiliano, a priest of the Diocese of Sioux City who is fluent in Spanish, will serve as the chaplain on this trip. Please consider joining this pilgrimage, in solidarity with Pope Francis. January 21-28, 2019 Includes airfare, 4-star accommodations, transportation, assistance of a tour manager & much more! $3,345 $3,245 Double Triple $3,100 Quad Call Canterbury Pilgrimages or visit canterburypilgrimages.com/siouxcity Fr. The dates for this year s retreats are June and October We hope that you will consider making a retreat at American Martyrs Retreat House this year. God Bless, Deacon Al Weber, Director American Martyrs Retreat House

8 April 3, 2018 Dear Monsignors and Fathers, We are once again inviting you to make your annual retreat at American Martyrs Retreat House in Cedar Falls, Iowa. We have two retreats scheduled for: June 10-14, 2018 and October 21-25, 2017, both are preached retreats. I apologize for the lateness of this letter, but it has been challenging this year finding retreat directors. June 10-14, 2018 Bishop Emeritus Ronald Gilmore, B.A., B. Th., M.A., S.T.L. The retreat is entitled, BE WITH HIM, As much as he wants; As much as we allow. Be with Him is taken from Mark 3:13-15, the Call of the Twelve. The retreat will be an extended meditation on that text for priests who are called to carry on the work of the Twelve. It is about Wonder at the Lord s towering love for each of us. Be with Him is about responding to that Love, with love, in that place called Prayer. That Gift of God is a living thing. It begins simply; prayer does; and it grows imperceptibly; and takes us to places we did not know existed. It does this, if He wants it; it does this, if we allow it. Be with Him is about the secret play of His Grace and our Freedom. The aim is to recover a sense of wonder at these mysterious things. The Real God. And the real man. And the real love that makes them one. Bishop Gilmore was ordained to the Priesthood in Wichita, Kansas in He became the Vicar for Pastoral Planning and Services in the Diocese of Wichita in He was ordained the Bishop of Dodge City July 16, 1998 and became Bishop Emeritus of Dodge City, February 2, His education includes: B.A. B.
