2 One in Christ Have you ever meditated on what it means to be one body in Christ? This concept imbued much of St. Paul's theology. When he met Jesus on the road to Damascus Jesus identified himself as being one with His body, the Church. He is the head and we are His body, what we do to a part or member of the body we do to Him, good or bad. This makes us not only one with Him but also with each other. In recently praying about this and meditating on it, I realized that our power and glory are found in this. One day on retreat while in seminary I was praying for a fellow seminarian friend of mine who was having a hard time. As I sat and prayed, with him sitting across from me in the chapel, my prayer was transformed by the grace of God. I had started out praying as we usually do for a person in need. During my time of prayer, God gave me a grace to put myself in his circumstances.. To a certain degree I was able to feel how he felt and think how he must have thought, I became one with him in Christ and that transformed my prayer for him. This is what it is to have compassion for someone, compassion means to suffer with. I was now praying for him as if it were for me. We know that there is a difference in how we are moved to prayer over something; the more directly it affects us the more fervently we pray, and I believe the more effective the prayer. If a stranger or some associate is going through a problem, such as sickness or loss of a job, we pray with a more distanced attitude than we do if it were happening to a loved one or ourselves. Jesus made us one in Himself that is a game changer for prayer and service. In the sacramental life, especially the Eucharist, He desires to make us truly One, with Himself and hence with one another. The more fully we allow that to be accomplished in us the more powerful and glorious we, the Church, the body of Christ become. Jesus prayed in Jn. 17 that we may be one as He and the Fr. are One so that the world may know that the Fr., God sent Him. We may say to ourselves that this could never be so, that "I could be compassionate toward people I hardly know as if we were a brother or sister and so pray and serve with equal fervor," but that is simply not so. It may be a high ideal but not impossible. If we take that attitude then we are saying God is not able to do all things and we would give a victory to the devil while we deny God, and nothing will happen. Many saints became such because they believed that nothing is impossible for God. Do we wonder why the Church does not seem to make more of a difference in the world? Maybe it s because we, its members, have lost the faith to believe God can accomplish in us what he wants to, to make us saints by which we show forth the glory and power of God. We must cooperate with the grace of God so that each of us, individually, one person at a time, allow God do accomplish this in us, it will happen and the world can be transformed as people come to believe that Jesus Christ is truly the One sent by God. We are one body, unfortunately only few have realized this and so pray and serve as they ought. See the other person, near or far, especially if they are in Christ, to be one with you and see if it does not empower you to pray and serve Him better in them. Fr. Richard Murphy
