2 A note from Bishop Frank Caggiano on Mission Coop Collection The yearly Co-operative Mission Appeal, sponsored by the Pontifical Mission Societies (formerly known as the Propagation of the Faith) will take place the weekend of July in all the parishes in the diocese of Bridgeport. It is a call to be generous in sharing what we have with our less fortunate brothers and sisters, especially those in developing countries. This collection is specifically geared to helping religious orders of priests, nuns and brothers who do missionary work outside the USA. Our diocese invites missionaries and representatives of the dioceses receiving assistance, to speak in parishes and to give us a better insight into their apostolates, both in their challenges and in their successes. The funds collected are divided equally between all those who speak on Co-Op Mission Weekend. By doing so, we place in their hands the tools for effective work in spreading the good news of Jesus Christ. The collection also serves as a call for us to remember our own commitment to the mission of preaching the good news of the Gospel, and gives us a chance to cooperate in our missionary vocation in the Church. I ask you to be as generous as possible, and to remember in your prayers all who are working in mission areas, and those who desperately need the message of God's love. A note from Fr. M.S. Selva Raj, Mission Director, Diocese of Kumbakonam Rev. David Kulandaisamy will be speaking during all the Masses at Saint Michael the Archangel Church on the weekend of July 16/17. The diocese of Kumbakonam has an area of 7,823 square kilometers and is situated in Tamil Nadu, South India with a Catholic population of 213,000 which is just 6 % of the total population. It is served by 191 diocesan and 68 religious priests, 561 nuns and 16 trained lay catechists. The Kumbakonam diocese celebrated the centenary of its inception in 1999 by setting certain concrete and meaningful goals for a New Evangelization in the new millennium: 1, Establishing 12 more new parishes, each with a new church and rectory. At present, there are 92 parishes and 621 missions-stations. Many of these are so large that they have to be made independent parishes with a resident priest. But the people are quite unable to support the church, for such pressing pastoral projects. 2. Providing all the 126 Catholic schools in remote missions with better tools, Children s Bibles, a projector, catechetical materials in the form of DVDs, pictures, books and workbooks to improve the quality of religious and faith formation of Catholic and non-catholic students in our schools. 3. Now there are 501 nuns and 2,155 Catholic Teachers in charge of catechetical, educational, medical and social ministries throughout this rural diocese, thus educating the children in the Catholic faith and helping the people, particularly the poor, for their integral development. Since education is a main means of evangelizations here, the diocese has to provide buildings and infrastructure to our schools in remote villages while the government would pay our teachers. 4. Education of more young men in the seminary, since the rural diocese abounds in vocations to priesthood and religious life and sending a few as missionaries to where they are most needed. 5. Education of 2,000 very poor or orphan children from remote villages every year by providing them with free board & lodge. All the above mission projects are 80% dependent on Mission Co-operative funds each year. The diocese is trying to materialize these missionary goals, depending on the availability of funds. Every year, an average of 50 young men and women go out of this diocese to other missions throughout India and other parts of the world to serve God and His people as missionaries. The mission and spiritual prospects of Kumbakonam diocese are bright but its needs are pressing. 60% of its Catholics are depressingly poor. Therefore, your fervent prayers and generous help are earnestly requested for building the Kingdom of God, in and through the diocese of Kumbakonam, India.
