2 The Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary The Blessed Virgin Mary has a very special place in the teaching and devotional life of the Catholic Church. Why does the Catholic Church give so much attention to Mary? Mary is honored because of her Son. Her great dignity flows directly from her being the human mother of Jesus Christ. The Catholic Church does not teach that Mary is divine. She is created by God, like all of us. God alone is to be adored and worshipped. God knew even before he created Adam & Eve that they would disobey him and thereby bring sin, suffering and death into human history. Yet God still desired to share his life with us. He chose to create humanity, knowing that he would send his own Son as our Savior to enable those who love him to be with him forever in heaven. God the Father desired that his Son become truly one of us. He would live among us and reveal the Father to us. He would restore our friendship with God that had been lost by original sin. Mary is the woman out of all human history who was chosen by God the Father to give human flesh and blood to his divine Son. Throughout the Old Testament, God desired to draw ever closer to his people; to reveal himself and his will in mysterious encounters: in the call of Abram (Gen 12); Jacob wrestling with the angel (Gen 32); Moses and the burning bush (Ex 3). God would draw closer in the Exodus of the Israelites from Egypt to the Promised Land when he commanded Moses to build the Ark of Covenant (Ex 25). The Ark, a sign of God s presence & protection, was placed in the tabernacle of the tent of meeting and contained the tablets of the 10 Commandments, manna, and the rod of Aaron. In Ex 40:3, we hear, The cloud covered the Tent of Meeting and the glory of Yahweh filled the tabernacle. Not coincidentally, in Luke 1, the angel Gabriel told Mary how she would become a virgin-mother: The Power of the Most High will cover you with its shadow and the child will be holy & will be called Son of God. During the Babylonian captivity, the temple, the original ark of covenant was destroyed. Pope St John Paul II said, When Gabriel made the announcement to Mary, God revealed to her his intention to leave his dwelling in the Temple of Jerusalem; to establish another form of dwelling among his people. He wanted to be united to us by making himself one of us, taking on our nature. Mary, overshadowed by the mystical cloud of the Holy Spirit, gives her assent to God s plan. From that moment her womb becomes the Ark of the Covenant, the holy sanctuary where the Incarnate Presence of God came down to dwell. When Mary said yes, she received the grace of divine Motherhood. The Son who is eternally in the bosom of the Father came into the bosom of Mary. The Word became flesh and dwelt among us. The Council of Ephesus (431) defined the dogma that Mary is theotokos (God-bearer, the New Ark of the Covenant); the Mother of God. Just as the temple in Jerusalem was holy because of God s presence in the temple in the ark, Mary is holy because she is the new Ark of the Covenant; because God lives and is present within her. This is the basis for the dogma of the Immaculate Conception, defined in 1854, which we celebrate on December 8 th. The Immaculate Conception means that at the moment of her own conception in her mother s womb, God intervened and preserved Mary from original sin. Therefore, Mary was born with a perfect, sinless, human nature - the same sinless nature that she would be giving to her son Jesus. The angel Gabriel hinted of Mary s sinless nature when he greeted her, Hail, full of grace (LK 1:28). The phrase full of grace comes from the word kecharitomene, in the original Greek of the New Testament. The angel s greeting literally reads as, Hail, you who have been transformed/graced. Mary's love for God is brought to its deepest fulfillment in heaven, where she intercedes lovingly for us. Like every good mother, she wants to teach us everything she has learned so that we can come to share in her wisdom and joy. Let s develop our prayer life and spend more time with God through Mary. The closer we come to Mary, the closer we will come to God, and the more his strength will enable us to resist sin; the more his love fills our hearts with joy and peace; the more his wisdom will help us make good decisions; and the more his mercy and patience will help us grow in mercy & patience.
