Baptism classes: the fourth Saturday of each month. This year, the Mission Co-Operative Sunday/ Collection will take place on July 15/16 in the Parishes of the Diocese. St. Michael the Archangel Parish has been assigned a speaker from The Mary Mother of God Mission Society. On the weekend of July 8/9, Deacon Patrick Cline and Bruce Gnatowski, from the Society, will visit our parish to speak about the Roman Catholic Mission Churches in Eastern Russia and the collection will be taken up on July 15/16. In the early 1900 s, the Russian Far East boasted a thriving Roman Catholic population. Many Russians, Poles, Lithuanians, and other groups inhabited the area and had built schools, hospitals, and beautiful churches. After the revolution of 1917, Russia became an emblem of the Communist era, a land without churches and without God. Under Stalin, all Catholic churches were confiscated and Dioceses closed. Most churches were desecrated or destroyed. Two American priests, Fr. Myron Effing, CJD, and Fr. Daniel Maurer, CJD, arrived in Vladivostok in 1992 to help re-establish the Church in this region and provide charitable assistance to the many poor. Now that the foundations have been laid, additional priests and sisters are joining the work, and parishes are growing and multiplying, very slowly, but surely. 2 Parish Council Update Since we have gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, let us exercise them. (Romans 12:6) I would like to offer my heartfelt gratitude to all the elected and appointed members who have so ably served in the outgoing council: Peter C. Brown, Mary Elizabeth FitzRoy, Jill Gussis, Anne Marie Hynes, Debra McLaughlin, Dorothy Riera, Ed Sottile, M.D., Andrea Hickman & Liza Sama (Walking with Purpose), and Mariana Grandmont & Nico Hickman (Youth Representatives). This past May, out of a total of 14 nominations received, the above existing council members voted and elected the following 6 new council members: Michael Ambrosino, Joseph Barragan, Terry Goodwin, Greg Neumann, Roni Schmitz, and Andrew Sieg. Per the bylaws, the council also consists of the (i) two lay Trustees of the Parish: Carol James and Jack E. Schmeltzer III; and (ii) organization representatives: Dorothy Riera (Sanctuary Guild), Roberta Chiappelloni (St. Michael Women s Association), Liza Hesburgh (Walking with Purpose) and members designated by the Pastor: Jill Gussis, Debra McLaughlin, Edward Sottile M.D., and a youth representative (to be determined). I have asked Joe Barragan to serve as the Chairperson and he has kindly accepted the responsibility. I have tasked him and the Council to develop a parish mission statement and also to continue the implementation and monitoring of the Parish Pastoral Plan, previously reported in our parish bulletin dated 11/20/16. Further, the Amended and Restated Bylaws (available on our parish website) states (in part) that the Council shall meet at least quarterly and at such other times as the Pastor shall designate. Purpose of the Council: To assist the Pastor in his leadership role of planning, organizing, initiating, promoting, coordinating and reviewing the evangelization, worship, religious education and service activities within the parish of Saint Michael the Archangel Roman Catholic Church. Objectives of the Council: a. To assess the needs of the whole Parish and its members, and to develop and implement the Pastoral Plan which will promote the common good of the Parish; b. To foster unity and a sense of community in the Parish and to coordinate all Parish activities in a manner that will best serve the interests of the Parish; c. To promote programs and activities recommended by the Bishop and Pastor, as well as the Council itself; d. Informing the Pastor of the needs and concerns, gifts and resources of the whole Parish and its members; e. Developing and reviewing a Parish mission statement and periodically re- evaluating and revising it; f. Participating in ongoing Parish planning; g. Recommending policies, procedures and programs which would assist in the implementation of the mission and the Pastoral Plan; h. Reviewing and evaluating the effectiveness of existing programs; and, i. Reflecting on Diocesan pastoral priorities and recommending how they can be implemented in the Parish. I am personally grateful to the members of the reconstituted Parish Council who, I pray, will bring not only their secular expertise but also their personal faith experience in advising me on how to best shepherd this great and beautiful parish of ours to further the mission of Christ and his Church and to build up the community of believers.
