As you can imagine, I receive many s, letters, telephone calls, and recommendations for books and articles I should read as your pastor. I do reply to the messages I receive. Prior to Thanksgiving, I received a book from a parishioner titled, Keeping the Sabbath Wholly: Ceasing, Resting, Embracing, Feasting. As I began to read the book I found myself wanting to reflect upon the message of the author. The author made the statement: But I don t wanna go to church! Marva Dawn has often heard that cry. What a sad commentary it is on North American spirituality, she writes, that the delight of keeping the Sabbath day has degenerated into the routine and drudgery even the downright oppressiveness of going to church. According to Dawn, the phrase going to church both reveals and promotes bad theology: it suggests that the church is a static place when in fact the church is the people of God. The gathering together of God s people for worship is important it enables them to be church in the world we realize that the act of worship is only a small part of observing the Sabbath. The author of the book invites the reader to experience the wholeness and joy that come from observing God s order for life a rhythm of working six days and setting apart one day for rest, worship, festivity, and relationships. She identifies four elements of Sabbath keeping: Ceasing: To be willing to step aside from work, accomplishment, and productivity in order that we may learn and allow God to take care of us rather than the inclination to take care of ourselves. Resting: To seek the spiritual, physical, emotional intellectual, and social rest we need in order to foster fresh perspectives, creative insights, and renewed spirits. Embracing: To deliberately choose the values of community in our everyday living. In recognizing our own personal call in life as we extend the fullness of healing brought by our relationships with God and one another. Feasting: To honor and reverence that which we hold most dear and to delight in that which tells us who we really are as children of God. As we continue to reflect upon our commitments and promises for 2017 may we refresh our understanding of Sabbath. In the peace of Francis of Assisi, Reference: Dawn, M. J. (2002). Many blessings during this New Year of 2017! We thank our director of facilities and the facility staff who prepared the Church and grounds for the Christmas celebration and Masses. A special thank you to the director of facilities for his leadership on the project with a set designer for the new backdrop for the nativity. Their work and set up added to the festive, faith-filled and Franciscan celebration of the Christmas Season. Many thanks to the entire facility staff! We thank Father David Bonarrigo, TOR for his vision and oversight of the development of the parish nativity scene during his years as pastor. When Father David became pastor he began the parish nativity with three Fontanini statutes: Jesus, Mary, and Joseph. Over the years, parishioners donated over thirty Fontanini statutes. We thank Father Jim Angert, TOR who continued the tradition and added to the nativity. We also thank the parishioners who donated the statutes and shared their time in setting up the nativity over the years. Many blessings! Celebrate Catholic Schools Week With Us! This month many of us will receive a mailing from Bishop Burbidge regarding the 2017 Bishop s Lenten Appeal (BLA). The theme for the 2017 BLA is Offering hands to serve and hearts to love. After reflecting upon the many blessings that God has given you, please prayerfully consider making a pledge to this important appeal that funds many programs and ministries that serve the people in our diocese. Through your support of this important appeal, you become the hands and heart of our Lord Jesus! Peace and good! The dates are February 7, 14 and 21 in the church at 4:00-5 p.m. The First session on February 7th will go until 5:30 p.m. It is mandatory to attend all three training sessions. Stations of the Cross On February (Sat.) 11 th, (Sun.) 12 th, (Mon.) 13 th, & (Tue.) 14 th all Religious Education classes during class times will be walking the Way of the Cross in Parish Hall B with the Director in preparation for the Lenten Season which begins on March 1 st. Presidents Day There will be no Catechism classes on February (Monday) 20 th & (Tuesday) 21 st and the Parish Office will be closed on Monday, February 20 th as well in observance of Presidents Day. Classes will resume the following week as usual on February 27 th & 28 th. JOB OPPORTUNITY St. Joseph School is in need of substitute teachers! First Penance (Reconciliation/Confession) On Saturday, February 25 th from 9:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. our Religious Education 2nd Grade students from the Saturday session, Sunday s students attending class in Spanish, as well as our Special Sacraments students from Tuesday s session will be making their First Confession in preparation for their First Holy Communion in May. Both students and parents will go directly to the church and not to the classrooms. THE YOUTH MINISTRY CORNER Revolving Our Lives Around Christ Our next Sunday Night Youth Event will be held on Sunday, Feb. 5th from 6:00-8:00 p.m. in Parish Hall C. Young people can join us for a night of laughter, prayer, and a segment entitled, "When I was your age...". Teens will explore topics and viewpoints of the past as well as how they might be beneficial to faithfulness and holiness today. Mission: St. Joseph Catholic Church preaches the Gospel through word, sacrament, and service to others in order to build God s Kingdom. Tom, Marylou Bergeron Handouts: 2017 BLA Talking Points Welcome Opening Prayer Jim Nash New discussion areas 2017 Bishop s Lenten Appeal (BLA) - PAC will give the BLA talk after Masses on the weekend Feb 12 th -13 th. PAC members all agreed it should not be more than 2 minutes and that it should name two things that will invite parishioners to support the BLA. Tom will write the first draft of this year s request and share it with the members of PAC. Closing Prayer THANKS TO OUR SPONSOR OF THE WEEK Pope Francis shared that the best description of the saints, their identity card, is found in the Beatitudes from Jesus s Sermon on the Mount, which begins, Blessed are the poor in spirit. New situations require new energy and a new commitment. The Pope then offered a new list of Beatitudes for modern Christians: Blessed are those who remain faithful while enduring evils inflicted on them by others and forgive them from their heart. Blessed are those who look into the eyes of the abandoned and marginalized and show them their closeness. Blessed are those who see God in every person and strive to make others also discover him. Blessed are those who protect and care for our common home. Blessed are those who renounce their own comfort in order to help others. BE PREPARED FOR INCLEMENT WEATHER St. Joseph Church follows the Fairfax County School closing schedule for all Church related activities, i.e., such as the closing of our school, Religious Education (C.C.D.) Classes, Scouting events, Eucharistic Adoration on Wednesday evening, etc. When Fairfax County cancels schools there will be No classes or activities at St. Joseph School. Even if Fairfax County reopens for evening activities we will still remain closed. No Religious Education (C.C.D.) classes and all meeting rooms are cancelled. When Fairfax County cancels school events (or extra-curricular activities) on Saturday due to bad weather, there will be No Religious Education (C.C.D.) classes, scouting events, C.Y.O. basketball, etc. Notice: During inclement weather, all reasonable attempts will be made to open and celebrate the weekday and weekend Masses at regularly scheduled times. In order to avoid risking your personal safety, while experiencing severe weather conditions, please use wise discretion, especially the elderly parishioners. Contemplate joining the Music Ministry and Praising God in a new way! Become a Blessing to your church community by making a commitment to the Music Ministry! Choir members, Cantors and Instrumentalists are all welcome. Cantors must audition. Instrumentalists must be able to do basic sight reading of music. Choir Rehearsals are Thursday nights from 7:15 9:00 pm in the church. Cantors meet periodically and on an as needed basis.
