Fathers Alberto, James, and I participated in the Franciscan Friars, TOR Province Gathering 2018 in July which was filled with sessions of planning for our Provincial Chapter of Elections in July 2019; two joyful Masses and festive occasions to honor the friars celebrating their jubilees of vows and priesthood and the solemn profession of two of our friars; prayer and fraternal time with the friars; and the challenges of a few issues facing our Province. One of the issues which we needed to address as a Province causes Father Alberto, James, and I to surrender our needs and wants for the good of the fraternity. I share the bittersweet decision that was shared with the three of us that Father James will be assigned to Saint Francis University as the Campus Minister effective September 17, It is our hope and commitment, that this decision will not directly affect the faith community, rather, it affects us as friars ministering at the parish for a period of time. As you know, our Province and parish will be celebrating the ordinations of Brother Vince to the priesthood and Brother David to the diaconate in October After their ordinations, both friars will be assigned to ministry at the parish. Brother Vince will begin weekend ministry as a priest at the parish beginning in October and full-time ministry as a priest at the parish in January Brother David will begin his ministry as deacon on weekends beginning in October. Father James and I have met with the appropriate friars to discuss the needs of the parish and especially our concern for Youth Ministry in the parish. As of this moment, it looks as though we have a good plan to have one or two friars from Saint Louis Friary in DC to lead this ministry. I am in conversation with a few members of the pastoral staff and a few parishioners regarding whether we should begin a search for a full time Director of Youth Ministry now or for I share this information with you in respect to your faithfulness and commitment to our faith community. Fathers James, Alberto, and I did not want you to learn this from a rumor or through another means. We ask for your prayers during this time of transition. Dear Padre: August 12, 2018 What does doxology mean? The verses of a popular gospel song, How Can I Keep From Singing, speak of our struggle with sorrow and darkness, and the ultimate joy we have knowing Since Christ is Lord of heaven and earth, / How can I keep from singing? The songwriter joyfully sings out because of God s love; it s a doxology of praise. Doxology, a glorious utterance, is a prayer the Church uses to give God praise. We have countless examples in Scripture, such as the psalms, which by their nature give God rightful praise. The Sanctus acclamation is another example. Taken from Isaiah 6, it directs our focus to praising God for his power and might. On Christmas night we sing Glory to God in the highest, a doxology from the angels. The eucharistic prayers end with a doxology to the Trinity showing how the Holy Spirit who thus awakens the memory of the Church then inspires thanksgiving and praise (doxology), Catechism of the Catholic Church, We use doxologies to emphasize our worship of God, acknowledging his rightful praise. Doxologies are part of major liturgical prayers such as the eucharistic prayers, the communion rite where we add a doxology following the Our Father. We also add doxologies to our personal prayers. The rosary contains a well-known doxology called the Gloria Patri, a prayer praising the eternal nature and love of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Fr. John K. 6 HERNDON, VIRGINIA THE NINETEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME August 12, 2018 St. Joseph Choir to Tape Shut-In Masses At Basilica On Thursday evening, August 16, 2018 our parish choir will sing at the taping of the TV Mass at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception. Come support the choir and be a part of the TV Mass congregation! The broadcast of The Sunday Mass not only offers the eternal banquet of Christ s Love to homebound Catholics, but also makes this central celebration of the Church s life available to any viewer with an open heart. Our choir will gather at 6:45PM in the Crypt Church. The Sunday TV Mass is broadcast locally at 10:30AM on WDCW Channel 50 (CW50), as well as nationally on the Catholic TV cable network from Boston. GABRIEL PROJECT Helping Pregnant Mothers In Need Our parish has three Gabriel Project mothers (each of them expecting a baby girl) due in the early fall, and a growing list of material needs to help support these new mothers. We are in need of diapers (sizes 1, 2, and 3), a bassinet, a stroller, a new infant car seat, breastfeeding supplies, bath time supplies, baby girl clothing (sizes newborn to 12 mos), infant slings/baby carriers, and gift cards to help with the collective purchase of necessary baby care items. Little Messengers Looking for a faith-filled activity for your preschooler? Little Messengers is a Catholic Preschool Co-Op for children ages 2 1/2-5 years old that meets in the St.Joseph's Catholic Church meeting rooms on Tuesday mornings during the school year. Parents or caregivers participate fully in leading various activities for the children, including a nursery for younger siblings. (This is not a drop-off!) Diocesan Child Protection Certification is required for participating adults. There is a nominal supply fee.
