ALTAR SERVER MEETING SUNDAY, OCTOBER 28 TH 12 NOON There will be a meeting and training for all current altar servers and those interested in becoming altar servers. The Children's Christmas Choir of Our Lady of Good Counsel Church will once again be singing at the Christmas Eve 5 PM Mass. Our first rehearsal will be on Sunday, November 4 between the two morning Masses, from about 9:15 am until 10:25 am, in the cry room of the church. Rehearsals will take place on most Sundays until Christmas, with three extra rehearsals the final week just before Christmas. A schedule will be available at the first meeting. Send a Hero Home for the Holidays The Ewing Knights of Columbus Council 3756 is once again hosting a Send a Hero Home for the Holidays fundraiser at the Firkin Tavern, 1400 Parkway Ave, Ewing. This year s event will be held on Wednesday November 7th from 5:00pm to 10:00pm. The Send a Hero Home for the Holidays program is sponsored by the Trenton Diocesan Federation of the New Jersey Knights of Columbus and pays the transportation costs for local active military personnel to return home for Christmas. 4 October 28, 2018 Thirtieth Sunday of Ordinary Time October 28, 2018 Deacon Steve Szmutko s Reflection On the Sunday Readings Jeremiah 31: 7-9 Psalm 126: 1-6 Hebrews 5: 1-6 Mark 10: There are many types of blindness. Physical blindness is, of course a great burden for many, not only in the poorer countries of the world, but in developed nations as well. Some are born blind, others lose their sight later in life; however, regardless of when it occurs, the inability to see is, at best, a tremendous disadvantage in navigating the world at large. To be sure, there have been some men and women, who have overcome the challenges resulting from physical blindness: Andrea Bocelli, Helen Keller, Ray Charles, James Joyce, Stevie Wonder, Milton, just to name a few. The great Jackie Robinson, the Hall of Famer who broke the color barrier in baseball, became blind in middle age following the conclusion of his stellar career, due to complications from other ailments, yet still stood as a symbol of justice to many. However, despite the great achievements of these and others, there is no doubt that blindness can be a great obstacle. In today s reading from the Gospel of Mark, Jesus encountered Bartimaeus, who was described as a blind beggar sitting by the roadside. When he heard that Our Lord was passing by, he began to cry out, Jesus, son of David, have pity on me. Although others admonished him, he persisted in his call. Jesus stopped and asked him, What do you want me to do for you? Bartimaeus replied plainly: Master, I want to see! Jesus responded, Go your way; your faith has saved you. Immediately he received his sight and followed him on the way. There is another type of blindness, which may be less impactful from a human perspective, but insidious nonetheless, that of spiritual blindness. For that type of blindness comes from within. Put simply, spiritual blindness is the rejection of the grace of God and the gift of faith. It is a blindness born of the inability or the unwillingness to recognize God s goodness. Perhaps we have experienced challenges or difficulties in our lives and have turned away from God. Perhaps we have fallen into sin and feel unworthy to receive God s blessings and graces. Overcoming spiritual blindness requires trust, in a sense a leap of faith in order to move from our old life to a new life in Christ. Consider Bartimaeus: he persisted in his call to the Lord. Casting aside his cloak, a symbol of his former life, he approached Jesus. Through persistence and faith, he was healed and followed Christ as his disciple. What is the source of our blindness? Is it anger, bitterness, apathy, guilt, regret, or some other unnamed impediment? It is time for us to cast aside the cloak that burdens us and place our faith and trust in the one who came to save us from sin and death. Our Lord beckons us to come to him and trust in his love.
