2 Reminder: The Greater Middletown Interfaith Council with host its annual worship service for Thanksgiving on Tuesday, November 20 at 7:00pm. Fr. Victor will be preaching and the service will be hosted by St. Paul's United Methodist Church 58 W. Main St., Middletown. The Journey Through Change Chart Comes To An End! This will be the last week that you will see the Journey Through Change chart in the Epistle! That is Grace Church has finally completed the Search process with the hiring of Father Victor and the service celebrating his new ministry with us. Some time in the coming months there will be a leadership retreat with Father Victor, the Wardens and Vestry and other church leaders and a mutual ministry review. As these occur we will be sharing the outcomes with the parish through articles in the Epistles and parish meetings as needed. It began on 16 Dec 1944 and officially ended on 25 Jan It had been fought in Belgium, Northeast France and Luxembourg. The U.S. suffered about 89,500 casualties during the five and a half weeks of fighting. About 19,000 of those casualties were soldiers killed in action. One soldier of those 19,000 dead was 25 year old PFC Richard R. Harrington, a resident of Middletown and parishioner of Grace Church. The son of Ambrose and Sadie Harrington, he was a graduate of Middletown HS Class of 39. Following his graduation he enlisted in the National Guard serving in an Artillery Unit for one year. In 1941 he married Mary Alice Lane of Walden and in 1943 he was recalled to active duty in the U.S. Army. About one month before the Battle of the Bulge began, PFC Harrington was sent to Europe, serving with the 897 th Field Artillery Battalion, 75 th Infantry Division. On 16 Jan 1945 he was killed in action in Belgium. A memorial service was held at Grace Church on 28 Feb The Rev. E. Spencer Gilley officiated at the service. PFC Harrington is buried in Newton, NJ. Sadly, he was not the only member of Grace Church who died in the Second World War. Eighty eight Grace Church parishioners served in the military during WWII. Of those eighty eight, four were killed in service to our nation. Besides Richard Harrington there was James Benway, George Kurz and Harry Reed. As we observe this year s Veterans Day, which is the 100 th anniversary of the end of World War I, we remember and pay tribute to the service of all members, past and present, of our military. A Note of Thanks This very nice note was in response to a presentation that Claire and Phyllis did for the Board of Episcopal Charities at the November 5th meeting in midtown Manhattan. Dear Phyllis and Claire, Thank you so much for the presentation tonight. I know it was a long journey for a short presentation, but I can tell you it was very well-received and had an outsized impact on the board. You re both excellent ambassadors for the program as well as for the elements that make a truly respectful and caring outreach program. We have program speakers at almost every board meeting, but this was one of the most engaged follow up discussions I ve seen. Thank you so much! I hope you have an awesome dinner and safe trip home. Take care, Leeanna Varga, Director of Programs at Episcopal Charities 24th Annual Crafte Faire - Help Wanted! As almost everyone knows, the annual Crafte Faire is our largest fundraising event. This event involves a great deal of work and fellowship from our congregation. Every year at the end of the day, I am so amazed at how well we all have worked together! I know this year will not be any different. There are many facets of the Crafte Faire that you can be a part of, from baking an item for the bake sale, to selling items (grandma s attic, raffle tickets, 50/50), to greeting people as they come in and explaining the Holiday Craft Trail, or manning our own craft table. We have a few openings in our food services area (Fish & Chips servers and table bus persons are needed). And, let s not forget about our Tea! Many hands are needed to prep the food for our Traditional English High Tea, as well as serve the many delightful snacks. If you can help, we would love to have you. Even if it is for one hour, we ll take it! Our clean-up crew starts working at 3 pm to return the church back to normal for Sunday services. If you can t make it on the day of the fair, but can help the evening before, we start setting up on Friday. Please consider helping in any way that you can.
