1 August 26, 2018 Phone FAX Sunday, August 26 When I despair, I remember that all through history, the way of truth and love has always won. There have been murderers and tyrants, and for a time they can seem invincible. But in the end they always fall. Think of it, always. 2 This Sunday s featured hymn was requested by the new secretary for the Guild of St. Margaret. Liz, I think her name is. For the past seven summers, I have been researching the origins of some of the hymns that we sing and sharing them with you in the service booklet and The Epistle. The most compelling stories share a recurring theme: someone is given an unimaginably heavy burden a debilitating illness, the loss of their eyesight, the loss of a child but rather than allowing themselves to be crushed under its weight, they accept Jesus offer of relief. The story behind this week s sequence hymn follows this theme. Joseph Medlicott Scriven was born in 1819 in County Down, Ireland, the second child of an affluent military family. At the age of 24, he was engaged to be married. On the eve of their wedding day, his fiancée fell from her horse while crossing a bridge and drowned in the river Bann, as Joseph stood waiting on the other side. Reeling from the tragedy, Joseph began to wander, hoping to forget his sorrow. It was then that he joined the Plymouth Brethren, one of several Separatist religious societies that had recently been established in Dublin. Shortly thereafter, he packed up his belongings and set sail for Canada, leaving his family behind, and settled in Port Hope on the north shore of Lake Ontario. Ten years later, Joseph received word that his mother was seriously ill. He didn t have the money to return to Ireland, but he wrote a poem to comfort her. Mrs. Scriven evidently sent a copy to a friend, who had it published anonymously. Joseph s poem was set to music, and the hymn What a friend we have in Jesus quickly grew in popularity, though no one knew who had written the verses. Meanwhile, Joseph fell in love again and became engaged, this time to Eliza Catherine Roche. In order for Eliza to marry a member of The Brethren, she had to undergo a baptismal rite, which included full immersion. It was conducted in Rice Lake in April 1860, with the ice barely thawed. Eliza, who was already seriously ill with tuberculosis, was thoroughly chilled by the experience and developed pneumonia. She weakened over the next four months and died on the 6th of August. To escape his sorrow, Joseph poured himself into ministry. His own tragedies seemed to make him more keenly aware of the suffering of the poor and weak, and he attempted to live according to the Sermon on the Mount, giving or lending to anyone who asked and sympathizing with those who were less fortunate. On October 10, 1886, at the age of 66, Joseph became critically ill. In his delirium, he rose from his bed and staggered outdoors where he fell into a small creek and drowned. His grave was arranged so that his feet were opposite those of his lost love, Eliza, so that at the resurrection they might arise facing each other. Ira Sankey, an American gospel singer and composer, later wrote: Until a short time before his death it was not known that he had a poetic gift. A neighbor, sitting up with him in his illness, happened upon a manuscript copy of What a friend we have in Jesus. Reading it with great delight and questioning Mr. Scriven about it, he said that he had composed it for his mother, to comfort her in a time of special sorrow, not intending that anyone else should see it. Some time later, when another Port Hope neighbor asked him if it was true he composed the hymn, his reply was, The Lord and I did it between us. If you have a favorite hymn that you would like to sing this summer, please let me know via , by clicking on my name below. See you in church! See you in church! 4 The 2018 Grace Church Tag Sale As they say, neither rain, nor sleet, nor dark of night WAIT! that s the Post Office motto. On Friday, August 17, and Saturday, August 18, it also applied to the intrepid members of Grace Church who were involved in setup, the actual sale and cleanup for our annual Tag Sale. Many thanks to all who came out to help in any way! If you came down to the churchyard on Saturday, you would have noticed that we had extra tents to cover many of the items for sale and, for the first time, we had the clothes in the Parish House lobby. We also arranged the tables outside the tent to try to help our customers avoid the muddiest areas of the churchyard. These changes did not deter our customers. From the opening (a few minutes before 9 a.m., as we had a crowd gathering outside the gate), we had a steady stream of customers buying an always surprising array of items. This continued despite a brief sun shower in the early afternoon and even during the downpour that came as we began to clean up just before 2 p.m. In fact, we made our last sale towards the end of cleanup. A young couple, the wife very pregnant, asked if the rocking chair that they had seen earlier was still available. It was, and at that point, I would have given it to them, but they insisted on paying full price! We finally prevailed on them to accept the chair at a discount since it had gotten a bit damp. The sale itself brought in a total of $ ; after we take out the start up money and the expense for the ad in the Times Herald Record, it appears that our profit is $ While this might not be as much as we made in previous years, it is more than estimated for the 2018 budget and certainly makes all of our hard work and wet feet worth it. So many people helped us in preparing for this event that we know we can t list all of them. We do want to mention a few people by name. This event would not be possible without the work of Mark Strunsky, who spends hours in the parish house basement sorting and marking the donations received. This year I know that Mark had help from Meg Catizone, Janet Hector, Patty Seekamp, Eileen Bloomer and Kate and Grace Gutierrez. Mark is also always present during the setup and cleanup and the sale itself. Thanks to Peter and Cindy Johnson, who lent us their clothing racks and came in early Saturday morning to help set these up in the Parish House. Cindy also came back to help with cleanup. Thanks to Ally Gutierrez, Lorraine Witkowski, Lourdes Cruz and grandchildren for handling the jewelry sales and to Sue Scott for manning the checkout table. John and Carolanne Cusack were there to set up the tent, help during the sale and were actively involved in the cleanup at the end of the day they both looked like they had showered in mud! Many thanks to Father Victor and Rhonda who not only helped throughout the day, they also arrived with donuts for the workers and treated us all to pizza at lunch time. Pepe Gutierrez and Paul Myruski came with trucks to help haul unsold items to Salvation Army. Rick Scott brought his brother and sister-in-law from Switzerland to help with cleanup, and David Scott trucked items to be put back in the Parish House across the church yard in bare feet. Newlywed Laura Scott Moore was also a big help with cleanup along with Mike Saunders, Fern Ashworth and Alyssa Myruski. As always, Joe Barrett spearheaded the setting up of the tent and was a presence throughout the morning of the sale before he had to leave, with Eileen, for a family wedding. Once again, thanks to all who helped in any way. It s the work of our parishioners that make these events a success! Eileen Barrett and Claire Newquist

9 Our Dear Brothers and Sisters, We have all heard the news of the flooding in the South Indian state of Kerala, caused by the extraordinary rains that came in this year s monsoon season. Each day the news becomes more troubling. As of this writing there are at least 350 people who have lost their lives in this catastrophe, and over 800,000 people have been displaced from their homes. This is the most serious flood India has experienced in a century, and is a disaster of historic proportions. The Diocese of New York has long-standing and strong ties to the Church of South India, and to the Christian community in India. At our Convention last November it was my privilege to award the Bishop s Cross to the Reverend Gideon Jebamani for his work on behalf of the poorest people in India, and we passed resolutions from New York to take to the General Convention on behalf of the struggling, suffering people of India. This is a part of the world in which our mission partnerships are strong and our ministry has deep roots. We also have two parishes in this diocese which worship in the Malayalam language, whose pews are filled with people from South India, and particularly Kerala where the Christian religion is strong. In these last days we have been learning of the dangers which have fallen on the families of clergy of this diocese and members of these parishes. They are our own brothers and sisters. This letter comes to you as an appeal for help. As we have done for Puerto Rico, Haiti, Mexico, and other areas of natural disaster across our church and world, and as we have done during Hurricanes Katrina and Sandy, we now ask the good people of this diocese to give again to support the relief efforts this diocese may make to help those in need, and those who have lost everything with little or no capacity to rebuild. After 9/11 and Hurricane Sandy, the world turned its eyes toward our state, city and diocese with compassion and outstretched hands. May we show that same spirit for the victims of this terrible flood. As we become more aware of relief agencies inside and outside our church whose work on behalf of the victims of this flood we may commend, we will include them in a link on the front page of our diocesan website. But we also invite you to make donations directly through our own diocese. You may make an online payment by clicking here. Checks may be made out to the Episcopal Diocese of New York and sent to the diocesan offices at 1047 Amsterdam Avenue, New York, NY 10025, with the words India Relief in the memo line. And please hold the suffering people of Kerala in your prayers, remember them at your altars, and hold them in Christian love. With every good wish, we remain Yours, The Right Reverend Andrew ML Dietsche The Right Reverend Allen K Shin The Right Reverend Mary D Glasspool Bishop of New York Bishop Suffragan of New York Bishop Assistant of New York
