3 Forthcoming events in the Parish First meeting of the Wednesday Club 5th September for 7-11 year olds - in Church House pm.meets weekly during term time. Other September dates 12th, 19th and 26th. Heart for Calne Christians with a heart for prayer coming together in unity to pray for the town of Calne. On Saturday 8th September from 9:15am to 10:45am. The Meeting this month is in the New Wine Shop, The Strand. Mothers Union Tuesday 11th September - meeting in Church House at 7:30 pm The speaker is a governor of Marden Vale Academy Open Doors Day Saturday 15th September, 11am to 3pm St Mary s Church will be open to all on Calne Open Doors Day, which will be a part of Heritage Week. Conducted tower tours will also be available during the day. Soup-er Lunch Friday 20th July 12:30 to 1:30pm Lunch of homemade soup, bread and cheese... followed by Cameo - Come and meet each other 2.00pm to 4.00pm...you ll be welcomed with a cup of tea...board games, and a time to chat and then tea scones, cakes and goodies. both events downstairs at Church House. From the community A To the community For the community A In the community! The members from The Men s Shed in Calne have crafted a beautiful wooden prayer tree for St Mary s Church. Many prayers have been written on leaves and added to the tree over the last few months and periodically these prayers are placed on the altar during a Eucharist service. We would now like to share our tree with you and plan to take it to Phelps Parade on Saturday 29th September from noon. Come and admire the handiwork that has gone into creating it, reflect a while in the midst of our bustling town and, if you wish, write a prayer and add it to the tree. In the event of very wet and windy weather which would damage the tree, St Mary s Church will be open instead. The tree will feature in our morning service on Sunday 30th September as part of the National Prayer Weekend. 4 The other day I had a conversation with someone who expressed what felt like an overwhelming sense of despair about the world in which we live; it prompted me to revisit this poem from the Iona Community A Safe City (Zechariah 8:1-19) Do you have a dream of a safe city? My favourite is the one God shares with Zechariah, a place where old people, who use walking sticks, sit and talk in city squares, and the streets are full of children playing. When the streets are unsafe I try to be brave and to act justly, and to hold on to God s dream. Ruth Burgess, Iona Community. On 29th September the Church celebrates Michael and All Angels. One of my favourite sculptures is Sir Jacob Epstein's bronze depicting the triumph of the Archangel Michael over the Devil, which is on the wall of Coventry Cathedral. The preserved ruins of the old Cathedral and the new Cathedral stand side by side as a reminder of the folly and waste of war [and] a sign of faith, trust and hope for the future of the world. Richard Howard, Provost at that time, wished to build a kinder, more Christ-child-like world. Today Coventry Cathedral is recognised around the world for its Ministry of Peace and Reconciliation; participants at a recent workshop were asked to consider:

5 Justice. Truth. Forgiveness. Peace. What is required in the reconciliation process? Is one component more important than the other? Where should an individual or community begin the reconciliation journey?...where will you begin? What will you decide? 21st September is the International Day of Peace. The theme for 2018 is The Right to Peace celebrating the 70th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. We are encouraged to support Sustainable Development Goal 16 (adopted by UN Member States) - Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions by seeking peaceful resolution of conflict when disagreements arise around you, at school, in the workplace, in our local community - see more at: As the hymn says: Let there be peace on earth and let it begin with me. These are the things that you shall do: Speak the truth to one another, render in your gates judgments that are true and make for peace, do not devise evil in your hearts against one another, and love no false oath Zechariah 8:16-17a. It seems these are all ideas and questions we might revisit regularly and reflect on. In the meantime, I try to be brave and to act justly, and to hold on to God s dream. 6 Précis of a Sermon for Petertide given at St Peter, Blackland by the Very Revd James Atwell, Dean Emeritus of Winchester on Sunday 24th June. The service marked the Patronal Festival at St Peter's church, Blackland, and the Dean shared his memories - of preaching there in the past - and of family burials including those of his brother and sisterin-law, Richard and Hasell.. just as Blackland holds many memories for those present, so it was Capernaum which held such memories for St Peter. Jesus made his base for his Galilean ministry there and called his first disciples, Andrew and Peter, James and John, from the fishing community by the lakeside. If you visit Capernaum today, you can still see the outline of the streets as they were in the time of Jesus and Peter, and a house is pointed out as being that of St. Peter. There does seem to be strong archaeological evidence for this as finds indicate that a fisherman lived there, and graffiti witness to its becoming a very early place of pilgrimage. Peter's Jewish name was Simon or Simeon, but Jesus gave him a new name when he said to him: You are Peter, the rock, and on this rock I shall build my Church. so he is often referred to as Simon Peter or Cephas (meaning rock in Aramaic). No doubt Jesus recognised in Peter someone who could lead the pack, as he did when he was the first to recognise Christ as the Messiah. Yet Peter could also get things badly wrong. He is a flawed human being like the rest of us, and it is that defective humanity upon which Jesus insists he will build. The episode in Peter s life which most obviously reveals his human weakness is the threefold denial of Christ, after his arrest. Peter has the loyalty to follow Jesus to the place where he is to be interrogated, Page 6 Very Rev d James Atwell but his courage fails him when he is recognised as a follower of Jesus. A serving girl confirms her suspicions, pointing to his Galilean accent; Peter insists a third time with oaths: I do not know this man. It is then that the cock crows - and Peter weeps. St John s Gospel recounts the reinstatement of Peter in Christ s resurrection appearance. Three times Jesus says: Do you love me?. Three times Peter is recommissioned: Feed my sheep. Jesus does not pretend the denial has not happened, but insists that he still has confidence in Peter despite everything. It was characteristic of Jesus that he did not wait for repentance before he declared to people the love and acceptance of God. It is in revealing God s love as being there for each one of us, as we are, without condition, that Jesus enables us to become what we have the potential to be: Something beautiful for God. Simon Peter was well known in the early Church as he travelled about in Palestine, Syria, Asia Minor and Rome.

7 The original concept for this monthly Newsletter, approved by the PCC, was that it should be a FREE publication. The PCC has recently confirmed that it should remain so, but should anyone wish to make a contribution to production costs, donations may be made in the orange pew envelopes (marking for NEWS). UK taxpayers may add their name and address to gift aid their donation. You may also, if it is more convenient, put the contribution, however small, in your own envelope at home. For as long as he lived he was the guarantor of the truth of Christ s resurrection. He stood out as the foundation witness and in a very particular way he becomes the rock on which Christ's Church is established. It was in the event of the resurrection that the Christian Church was able to discern in Christ more than a prophet who taught people of the overwhelming love of God. Rather, they discerned the very overwhelming love of God himself who when we were still far off met us in His Son. AMEN. Left: Saint Peter in prayer.
