1 Ter 4 WEEK 2 OF 10 Teplate Gilson Gazette - 14 October 2016 Weekly Newsletter for Parents, Students and Friends of Gilson Page College 1
2 EDITORIAL Eighty-five years ago on a Septeber evening, Jack and John sat up talking well into the early hours of the orning. They were discussing and arguing whether Christianity was rational or sound, and up to that tie Jack was seriously influenced by his atheistic philosophy. Both en were professors fro Oxford University, both were in the English departent and both were on their way to becoing globally known for their writing. John, who had argued the case for Christianity, went on to write books like The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings and is today better known as J.R.R Tolkien. Jack whose real nae was Clive wrote The Chronicles of Narnia and is becae known as C.S. Lewis. Lewis, known to his friends as Jack, not only renounced atheis that night, but becae one of the world s greatest defenders of Christianity. So 85 years after the event when Jack becae a Christian, it s worth sharing a few quotes fro a an who ade thinking a part of his life. Christianity, if false, is of no iportance, and, if true, of infinite iportance. The one thing it cannot be is oderately iportant. If Christianity was soething we were aking up, of course we could ake it easier. But it is not. We cannot copete, in siplicity, with people who are inventing religions. How could we? We are dealing with Fact. Of course anyone can be siple if he has no facts to bother about. A an who was erely a an and said the sort of things Jesus said would not be a great oral teacher. He would either be a lunatic on the level with the an who says he is a poached egg or else he would be the Devil of Hell. You ust ake your choice. Either this an was, and is, the Son of God: or else a adan or soething worse. You can shut Hi up for a fool, you can spit at Hi and kill Hi as a deon; or you can fall at His feet and call Hi Lord and God. But let us not coe with any patronising nonsense about His being a great huan teacher. He has not left that open to us. He did not intend to. Supposing there was no intelligence behind the universe, no creative ind. In that case, nobody designed y brain for the purpose of thinking. It is erely that when the atos inside y skull happen, for physical or cheical reasons, to arrange theselves in a certain way, this gives e, as a by-product, the sensation I call thought. But, if so, how can I trust y own thinking to be true? It s like upsetting a ilk jug and hoping that the way it splashes itself will give you a ap of London. But if I can t trust y own thinking, of course I can t trust the arguents leading to Atheis, and therefore have no reason to be an Atheist, or anything else. Unless I believe in God, I cannot believe in thought: so I can never use thought to disbelieve in God. All I a in private life is a literary critic and historian, that s y job... And I prepared to say on that basis if anyone thinks the Gospels are either legends or novels, then that person is siply showing his incopetence as a literary critic. I ve read a great any novels and I know a fair aount about the legends that grew up aong early people, and I know perfectly well the Gospels are not that kind of stuff. It s all worth a thought. 6 Congratulations to Dylan, Deborah and Jaeban for representing Gilson College at the Regional Athletics Chapionship and successfully finishing their copetition. Keep up with good work! CAR PASSENGER SAFETY CONCERNS Thank you for your cooperation as we ensure the safety of our students through our drop off and pick up procedures. Unfortunately, we often see our young students travelling in the front seat and not wearing their seatbelts. We would like to reinforce the iportance of fastening seat belts once in the car, as well as the legal age for children to travel in the front seat of the car. Please note the following inforation taken fro the Vic Roads website: vic.gov.au At what age can a child travel in the front seat? If your child is aged between 4 7 years, they ust travel in a forward facing child restraint or a booster seat. The type will depend on their age and size. Children aged 4 years to less than 7 years ust use either: A forward facing child restraint with an inbuilt harness, or A booster seat Children aged 4 years old to under 7 years old can only sit in the front seat if all of the back seats are taken by other passengers under 7 years old. If your vehicle does not have a back seat (e.g. a ute) they can travel in the front seat if they are in a child restraint. Children aged between 7 and 16 are required to use a booster seat or adult seat belt when travelling in a vehicle. Page 6
