1 New exploration rights could lead to fracking The map showing the land (in green) for which oil and gas exploration rights are to be offered Land in the Witham Herald area has been included in the government s latest offering of rights to explore for inland oil and gas. These rights include the possibility of extraction by use of the controversial fracking process. Announced just before the Herald was due to go to press, this news could dramatically impact upon local communities. The rights to exploration in the areas known as SK86c and SK96, which includes Hykeham, Bassingham, Witham St Hughs and land Continued on page 4 Please support your local advertisers Please mention The Witham Herald when responding to advertisers 1

4 New exploration rights could lead to fracking (Continued from page 1) all the way eastwards to Waddington/ Bracebridge Heath, have been formally offered to Aberdeen Hydrocarbon Development. We put a series a questions to the company regarding their intentions in the area but as yet have received no response. We will report their eventual response in the next issue. The rights will allow the company to apply for planning permission to drill to determine if there are sufficient deposits that can be commercially extracted to warrant a further application for planning permission to start an extraction operation. Whilst the government and Lincolnshire County Council have been keen to stress that nothing may happen at all and fracking may not occur in our area, it cannot be ignored that only recently rules regarding planning applications for fracking were altered so that if county councils don t take a decision within 16 weeks the decision is transferred to the Energy Secretary. This has been widely regarded as an attempt by the government to ensure that, not only is the process speeded up, but that more positive results are achieved although I doubt any Department of Energy spokesperson would confirm that is the intention. These rights are probably controversial largely in that they open the door to the possibility of fracking to extract otherwise hard to get oil and/or gas deposits. The process involves pumping a combination of water, sand and chemicals into the well, under pressure, to move the deposit out of the hydraulic fractures in the shale rocks. It has been widely adopted in the USA where it has led to energy independence and a large fall in the costs of oil and gas. This has also contributed to the global oil price falls of the last year as the increased supply from the USA, added to an unwillingness upon the part of OPEC to cut production has led to a glut of oil on world markets and heavy price falls. a Shale gas or fracking rig Environmental campaigners oppose fracking though. In the USA there have been worries about water pollution and earth tremors associated with the process. As most of the extraction has taken place in very lightly populated areas opposition has been easily overridden though. It is doubtful that the same process would be accepted so easily in a densely populated country like the UK. Fracking exploration in Lancashire has already been accused of causing earth tremors in the Blackpool area (although this hasn t been proven, with both sides insisting they are right). Environmentalists also point to the fact that these licenses will lead to more oil and gas extraction and thus burning, whereas they would prefer more effort put into encouraging the development of commercially viable renewable energy generation. We will provide a further update in the next issue. Witham St Hughs Parish Council forced to consider closing MUGA court The Multi Use Games Area (MUGA) court in Witham St Hughs has become a focal point for anti social behaviour by some village youths. This has taken the form of intimidation of younger children and adults, two incidents of indecent exposure, injury to a young lady caused by a BB gun, vandalism to a CCTV camera, an increase in litter and anti-social behaviour. Vandalism and damage in the village as a whole is also an issue that may be linked to the group that are congregating at the MUGA court. Efforts so far have failed to educate the offenders or, at least, stop this behaviour occurring. This has forced the Parish Council to consider taking the extreme step of closing the area. The Parish Council have made it clear to the Herald that no decision has as yet been taken to close the MUGA court. Such a decision would no doubt be very hard to take given the considerable resources that went into its construction and the consequences of denying its use to all those people who have done no wrong. Parents, please make sure you know where your children are, who they are with and what they are doing. The youths who have carried out these offences all have parents who can make a difference to this situation before it escalates further. 4 Please mention The Witham Herald when responding to advertisers

12 HICKSONS: MEATING DEMAND FOR PIES Local family business Hicksons was first establuished in 1923 when Leonard Hickson bought the butchers shop in Lincoln he had been working in for 20 years. His sons Derek, Tony and Mick joined the family business and it expanded with a shop in Heighington and a farm in Bassingham. In 1998, Derek and his sons Robert and Richard bought the old Co-op store on the High Street in Bassingham and converted it into a Spar shop and butcher. Today the Bassingham shop has three generations of Hicksons working in the family-run business under the joint management of Robert and Richard Hickson. The Bassingham shop has recently undergone a partial refurbishment and two new large display cabinets installed. One cabinet is filled with cooked meats, awardwinning pies, cheeses and deli products. The other hosts an array of fresh meat, from traditional joints of beef, lamb and pork to steaks, a barbeque selection and stir-fries with exotic names such as Greek Passion, Argentina Fire and Indian Mystery. The Spar shop has a full range of convenience products, including hot and cold food and drinks. They have recently introduced their own range of ready meals. Hicksons of Bassingham also provide event catering for your function. Whether it s a wedding or fete, Hicksons can help to make the event a memorable Award-winning team: (l to r) Robert Hickson, Alex Atkin, Richard Hickson one with their Hog Roast, which can be hired as a DIY option or fully serviced by professional staff (beef & lamb can also be provided). Hicksons make all their own pork pies and speciality pies, which are hand-crafted and baked on the premises. If you re looking for an original and interesting alternative to the tradional buffet or wedding meal, Hicksons can supply a wedding cake made from their delicious range of pies. For special occasions, they can provide pies complete with inscriptions baked on top. In the last two years Hicksons Pies, meats and sausages have won many awards including at Gold level at the Lincolnshire Poacher Competition and the BPEX Butchers Regional Roadshow. 12 Please mention The Witham Herald when responding to advertisers

Witham St Hughs (01522) Curate s Corner Between 2009 and 2013 the number of albums in the UK that were sold on CD near enough halved from 112 million to just over 60 million. In the same time frame digital sales, on itunes and other online retailers more than doubled. For music retailers on the High Street it was a difficult time. HMV, the ninety year old company with outlets all over the UK faced disaster, and at the beginning of 2013 it was rescued from administration but saw significant store closures and job losses. Somewhat surprisingly only two years later HMV is once again making profits, and has just announced it is to open new shops across the Middle East. It is also in talks to expand into Australia, China and India. They have seen year-on-year CD, DVD and Blu-Ray sales increase by small amounts, but the real star is vinyl albums where the number sold has increased by 170%. Why is a technology that is more than a hundred years old and was thought to be completely obsolete seeing such a revival in fortune? At the very least it seems to be tapping into a rich vein of nostalgia. We so often look back at the past and remember bigger baked bean tins, cheaper petrol, children who respected their elders, and all sorts of other things that were better back then. For the church, there is also the temptation to see the past as a golden age of Christianity. A time when pews were full and there was a vicar riding his bike through every parish calling on all and sundry for a cup of tea and a natter. I m fairly certain that s not the case. People aren t less interested in God or spiritual things now, probably the reverse. It s just they have discovered how many different places there are that they can look. As Christians we need to be prepared to continue to make Christ known without dwelling on the past. That doesn t mean we can t look back and learn. It s just like driving. It s important to check in the rear view mirror to remind yourself what s behind you. It s absolutely vital that you look forward to see what might be coming up ahead and be ready to steer in the direction God is calling us to, Andy Jackson-Parr (Curate) 22 Please mention The Witham Herald when responding to advertisers

Many thanks to those of you who came to support the farmers market in June and more recently at the summer fete. Several of our members also attended tea and tents 2015 which this year was held at Walesby scout camp in Retford and thankfully this year it was blessed with beautiful weather. Our main focus now is making more plans to help us celebrate the centenary year of the WI. In the next few months we will be continuing our hard work with our lottie project and this year we are hoping to get some goodies to share amongst our members - we ve already managed a few strawberries in time for Wimbledon. My thanks must go out to those dedicated members who have continued to nurture and look after Lottie in particular Carol and Bekki. As we head closer to WI day on 16 th September we are looking forward to celebrating 100 years of the WI in our own way so keep your eyes out for our centenary shenanigans up until Christmas. We also have one more farmers market planned for this year and we are hoping to build upon the success of our previous markets. Despite last minute setbacks the market was well attended and we hope to see everyone again in September. We re always happy to welcome new members so if you fancy coming along to see what we re all about then here are a few dates for your September diary: Wednesday 9 th September Monthly meeting centenary celebrations Village Hall 7.30pm Wednesday 16 th September WI day Saturday 26 th September Farmers market from 9am in the village square Upcoming dates: Wednesday 14 th October Monthly meeting 6 th Birthday party and hoedown Village Hall 7.30pm Friday 13 th November Lincs Fashion Show Witham Academy 7.00pm I know it can be quite daunting coming to a group of people you don t know but we are more than happy to try and arrange a catch up prior to a meeting so at least there s a friendly face when you come. 29 Focus on LOCAL BUSINESSES First birthday for Tranquility On July 28th Tranquility Hair and Beauty Studio in Witham St. Hughs celebrated its first birthday and clients who visited the salon decorated with balloons and bunting were treated to tea and cakes. The manager of the studio, Jodie Scarcliffe has been hairdressing in the village over 5 years, she is the senior stylist, and told the Herald that the Tranquility Team are competent in all aspects of hairdressing, cutting Lucia, Jordan, Jodie and Charlotte and colouring. Lucia, also a senior stylist, specialises in put ups. Jordon completed his apprenticeship earlier this year, specialises in men s styles as well as ladies hairdressing. Charlotte is just starting her second year of her apprenticeship in conjunction with Lincoln college and Mille, who is still at school, helps out on Saturdays. New to the Studio is Beautician Scarlett Haile who completed her NVQ Level 2 & 3 training in Beauty Therapy at Grimsby College. She then went on to Grimsby University to graduate with a Salon Management Degree, Scarlett is Tranquility s new beautician while studying Scarlet was working as a mobile beauty therapist in the Louth area. Scarlet undertakes all the beauty treatments including Swedish Massage, waxing, pedicures & manicures, facials, nails and eyebrow tinting. COMMUNITY GROUPS NEEDED Charities and community groups are being encouraged to apply to be part of Lincolnshire Co-op s Community Champions scheme, which could see them raise hundreds of pounds. All Lincolnshire Co-op members are linked to a Community Champion, which is a good cause close to where they live. Every time a member shops using their dividend card in any Lincolnshire Co-op outlet where points are issued, a donation from the Community Champions pot goes towards their local good cause. The groups change every three months so lots of organisations can benefit. If a member chooses, they can also sign up to give their donations to one group all year round. Typically, after every three month stint, around 80 local groups share in 45,000. Now, the Society s Membership and Community team are looking for more groups to come forward and get involved. It s a great chance for charities and community groups to get a fundraising boost, said Lincolnshire Co-op s Member Engagement Manager Richard Whittaker. We know there must be lots of groups out there that could benefit and it s really simple to apply to be a Community Champion. Groups just have to fill out a short form and if they re chosen, they ll be able to raise hundreds of pounds. For more on the Community Champions scheme and how to apply, visit Lincolnshire Co-op s website: or pick up a form in your nearest store. The Tranquility Studio is fully equipped with the latest equipment and products and their range of hair and beauty treatments cater for men, women and children. They offer a full package for weddings and Princess parties for young ladies birthdays or special events. During September they have 10% off all the studio s hair and beauty treatments with the voucher on their advert on page 21 (this is not applicable to the Sport Massage).
