COMING OF AGE 2015 Issue 2/ Page 1 Special Moments Issue 2 10 Jun (Wed) - 12 Jun (Fri) Contributors: Ms Ong Chwee Geok, Ms Janelle Peralta, Mr Simon Leow Teacher engaging students in an engaging discussion on Di Zi Gui ( ) lesson about how to make best out of time (11 Jun 2015) (Di Zi Gui Summary),. (Dizi Gui, quotes from Confucius, the sage of sages, are instructions for children throughout the ages),. (First, be dutiful to parents and fraternal to siblings, then be strict with yourself and honest towards others),. (Befriend everyone around you but stay close to those of virtues),. (If you ve done these and have time to spare, search for knowledge) Ms Ong helping students to consolidate their learning during discussion time. (11 Jun 2015) Students personal anecdotes of Di Zi Gui values (11 Jun): (filial to parents or grand parents) I took care of my parents when they were sick. (John Ali Gunawan Sec 2P) Every night, I wait for my father to come home from work and accompany him to eat dinner. (Dave Tirtariyadi Sec 2I) (caring towards siblings) I always take care of my younger sister when my parents aren't home. (Wilbert Dwiputra Indra Sec 3G) I love and care for my younger and older sibling. (Cindy Alessandra Gotama Sec 2I)

Students personal anecdotes of Di Zi Gui values (11 Jun): (strict with oneself) Paying attention to your actions and words as they could greatly affect others. (Samantha Hartono Sec 2P) I get up early and treasure the time I have. (Elaine Isabelle Korompis Sec 2I) (honest with others) When my mom asks me a question I am honest to her. (Matthew Daniel Hariman Sec 2I) Do not lie, chat too much and speak dishonestly. (Felice Nathania Pudya Sec 2I) A morning discussion before starting the day. (10 Jun 2015) We need to be considerate about others and not be selfish for our own interests. (9 Jun) John Ali Gunawan Sec 2P Sparing during Taichi lesson. (10 Jun 2015) Issue 2/ Page 2

Issue 2/ Page 3 Chinese tea culture includes the methods of preparing tea, the equipment used to make tea and the occasions in which tea is consumed in China. Teacher Yang JieFeng ( ) teaching students how to dry the tea leaves. (10 Jun 2015) Felice offering Teacher Han QingQing ( ) the tea they prepared. (10 Jun 2015) The teacher said that when doing the tea ceremony, we should follow the flow of our hearts and soothing our feelings. Patience is one way to calm the mind, body and soul. Forgiveness was something I have learnt in the movie of Huo Yuanjia. Forgiveness is to forget the past and try to spare the past as one learns from one s mistakes. It is something which involves patience in heart that it is necessary for us to be calm and accept the past and let it flow away. (10 Jun) Winson Lim Sec 2P

Chinese painting is one of the oldest continuous artistic traditions in the world. Issue 2/ Page 4 Principal Zhou XuXing( ) showing the art of Chinese painting himself. (11 Jun 2015) I agree on the value to treat others the way you Teacher Jin RuYi teaching Cindy freehand brushwork. (11 Jun 2015) want to be treated. I think that this statement is very important because if we do not respect people, why would they need to respect us. I also think that we should think about other people and not only ourselves. As being too selfish would not lead to success. (9 Jun) Cindy Alessandra Gotama Sec 2I Today I really realized how much of a family the people who come to COA are. When we played basketball I saw so many people asking each other whether they were alright. It showed how much everyone cared about each other. Then I had first hand experience when I stepped on another person's skateboard, tripped and dropped my food, so many people asked whether I was okay despite me not even falling. In addition to that when other people who weren't there heard what happened they still asked me whether I was alright. I felt really touched seeing everyone constantly check on each other. (9 Jun) Aileen Gracia Indra Sec 2P

Issue 2/ Page 5 Elaine putting great effort in her work. (11 Jun 2015) Shannon and Aaron E with their own masterpieces.. (11 Jun 2015) Based on the values I learned in class today or the previous day, I agree with patience. When we are doing the calligraphy, we should be patient as it takes time to make the words perfectly. And also when we are doing the paper cutting, we have to be patient and to be careful so we could make it nice. Without patience, we would not achieve what we want to do. (9 Jun) Shannon Suhendra Sec 2I Learning from your mistakes can change who you are for the greater good. (10 Jun) Aaron Emmanuel Simandjaja Sec 2P Punctuality is very important because if you are late it may affect other people and time is something you should cherish. (11 Jun) Elaine Isabelle Korompis Sec 2I

Geoffrey is expressing his opinion to Teacher Ma JuNü ( ) about how to be a gentleman. (10 Jun 2015) Issue 2/ Page 6 Be careful when you make friends. As we learned from Confucius' teaching there are three kinds of good friends and three types of bad friends. (11 Jun) Geoffrey Kieran Budiman Sec 2I Students personal understanding of Confucius values (9-11 Jun): If you don't like the things you do, don't give it to other people. (Winson Lim Sec 2P) : Good people are united even though they have their differences, the bad people are the same but dont unite. (Natalie Mulyawan Sec 2I) Good people are united and do not plot bad things while bad people are separated and plot. (Kissa Gabrielle Angjaya Sec 2P). Three kinds of friends will do good : upright friends, trustworthy friends, and well-informed friends. Three type of friends that do no good : hypocritical and flattering friends, ingratiating and falsely obedient friends, and sweettalking friends (Mitchell Aaron Chandra Sec 2I) : There's always going to be something good you can learn from people. (Carolyn Kusuma Sec 2I) Chinese knotting, Zhōngguó jié) is a decorative handicraft art that began as a form of Chinese folk art in the Tang and Song Dynasty ( AD) in China. Mitchell is trying his best to do the Good Luck and Peace knot. (11 Jun 2015) Shannon and Carolyn helping each other in making Good Luck and Peace ( ) knot. (11 Jun 2015)

A short discussion about Beijing Opera Mask Making ( by Teacher Yu Dan ( ) before they start designing their own mask. (12 Jun) Issue 2/ Page 7 Meaning of Mask Making in action. (12 Jun 2015) The values that I agree with is about loving and caring everyone around from the teachings of Confucianism. As a Catholic, it is stated in the Ten Commandments and the Bible that we should treat our neighbors well, like as if how you wanted to be treated. It is important to care and respect other people, so that they can treat us the same way. (9 Jun) Winson Lim Sec 2P The greatest insight I have learnt is that we shouldn't give up until the very end. The movie (Huo Yuanjia) showed that the main character never gave up until the very end even when he died. (10 Jun) Aaron Herbert Johannes Sec 2P

Aaron J. challenging Teacher Zhan BaiGe ( ) to a game of Wu Zi Qi ( ). (12 Jun 2015) Meaning of Issue 2/ Page 8 The character strength from Huo Yuanjia that inspired me is sparing people's life even when he had the chance to win the fight. This reminds me that sometimes to show that you re stronger than the others, you don t have to do so by force, but you can do so by making them realize it themselves. (10 Jun) Carolyn Kusuma Sec 2I Dave thinking very hard to come up with a move. (12 Jun 2015) One lesson we learnt today is time management. Time management is very important as it helps us become organized. " which means " As every thread of gold is valuable, so is every moment of time. (11 Jun) Dave Tirtariyadi Sec 2I As I grow up, my parents also grow older. I should not forget to take care of them and thank them for everything they have done for me. (10 Jun) Shannon Suhendra Sec 2I Today I was reminded of my parents especially my mom. Sometimes I forget to ask about how my mom or dad is doing when they constantly check on me. It made me feel guilty as I know how much my mom worries about me. As a solution just asking whether she was alright and telling her not to worry about me made Lastly, what comes around goes around. The quote After giving a rose, a fragrance is left on your hand, shows that when doing good things, a favour will be returned to you. (9 Jun) all the difference. Sometimes I forget to cherish my mom enough and I feel that I should no longer forget. (10 Jun) Aileen Gracia Indra Sec 2P Kissa Gabrielle Angjaya Sec 2P

Issue 2/ Page 9 Mahjong is a game that originated in China. It is commonly played by four players (with some three-player variations found in South Korea and Japan). (8 Jun 2015) We should no give up easily because a lot of people are going through much harder things than we are going through. We should be grateful of what we have and not take it for granted. Another thing is that we should be polite and respect our elders, family, friends and teachers because they deserve it as they have helped us go through a lot of tough times and sometimes we take them Meaning of for granted. (9 Jun) Wynona Audrey Halim Sec 2I Being mindful of others is a very important principle, one that everyone should be aware of. What to say, to who, when to say it, and how they would feel about it. (11 Jun) Caitlyn Limanto Sec 2P We may have our differences in many ways, but this is what lets the world function; and in the end, we can only turn to each other for help. So when that time comes, we must all be ready to help one another. If not, what was the purpose in having such a wide diversity of people? (9 Jun) Samantha Hartono Sec 2P Soccer time. (11 Jun 2015) That I learnt that as I grew older, my parents also grows older at the same time, so I need to cherish the moments when they're still with me. (10 Jun) Cindy Alessandra Gotama Sec 2I

Issue 2/ Page 10 Students enjoying Touch Rugby during the afternoon sports time. (12 Jun 2015) Meaning of I agree with value of universal love. This is because if everybody loves each other, there would not be any wars and peace could be brought to earth. I also agree with the value of that if I do not like something, other people might like it. This tells us to respect other people's preferences. (9 Jun) Mitchell Aaron Chandra Sec 2I Students enjoying soccer during their daily sports time. (11 Jun 2015) People often say that mistakes are bad and we should avoid it. Howeve r, this is not all true. Mistakes can help us learn to be better and to improve more in the future. (10 Jun) Dave Tirtariyadi Sec 2I Do not be arrogant as arrogance c an lead you to losing. (10 Jun) Matthew Daniel Hariman Sec 2I
