Throughout the Gospel of John, Jesus has made many I am statements. But of all of them, I am the vine, goes the farthest of any of them. Here we have our Lord telling us that our very life flows directly from His life. We are so connected to Him, so united to Him that we do not really exist without Him. Jesus is the origin and source of true or real life as against false life or an imitation of life. Real or authentic life is the life of a person who abides in Jesus. False life is the life of a person who thinks that he or she can do anything without Christ. If we try to live only out of our own resources then we are not really living at all. When we abide in Christ s life then we will have the chance of becoming authentic people. Instead of our own selfish and self-interests being the source of our behavior, it will be our oneness with Jesus Christ. 1

FIFTH SUNDAY OF EASTER APRIL 29, 2018 CELEBRATING THE SAINTS Saint John Macias, Lay Brother (1585-1645) John came from Ribera del Fresno, Extremadura, Spain. His parents, impoverished nobles, died while he was still young. His uncle sent him out into the fields to manage the sheep. John spent the long days praying his rosary. He was visited by the Blessed Mother and Saint John the Evangelist. When John was thirty-five, Saint John appeared to him and urged him to go to the New World, where his vocation would unfold. John made his way to Lima, Peru, where a wealthy landowner hired him to take care of the cattle. Two years later, John was able to join the Dominicans at the convent of Saint Mary Magdalene as a lay brother. He was told to tend the door. John began a regimen of rigorous penances, sleeping but an hour a night and taking much of his own food to feed the poor. He begged for the needy, too, and upwards of 200 people came to depend on him daily for their subsistence. When the food was wanting, John prayed and something would always turn up. Among John s austerities were the sacrifices and prayers for the poor souls, many of whom visited him to thank him for his prayers. John endured great torments from the devil, who visited him daily for fourteen years. His weapon in these contests was his simplicity and his utter abandonment to God. His surrender was complete on his deathbed: Into your hands, Lord, I commend my spirit. Saint John Macias feast day is celebrated on September 18 th. We rejoice with our 33 First Communicants who received the Body and Blood of Jesus for the first time on Saturday, April 28, 2018. Please keep these children and their families in your prayers. Donuts will be sold at $8.00 per dozen or purchase a half-dozen for $5.00. The proceeds from the donut sale will go toward the annual Knights of Columbus Measure Up campaign which helps fund programs for those with developmental disabilities. Your support will be greatly appreciated. MOTHER S DAY CARDS Mother s Day Mass Cards will be sold after most Masses this weekend, April 28/29; and the weekend of May 5/6. Mother s Day is May 13. This is a great way to honor your Mom, living or deceased, by remembering her with a special Mass. Cards for the Living are $2.00 and cards for the deceased are $1.00. Cards may also be purchased at the rectory during regular business hours. CARNATION SALE The Pro-Life Ministry will be selling carnations for Mother s Day on May 12th and 13th after all Masses. Buy one for your mother, or purchase one to place in the vase in front of the inside or outside statue of Our Heavenly Mother. Thank you. HEY CATHOLIC! DID YOU KNOW Did you know that the many Catholics make what is called the "First Saturdays Devotion" which entails going to Mass and receiving Communion on the first Saturday of the month for five consecutive months in reparation to the Immaculate Heart of Mary? Next week Saturday is the first Saturday of May. Come to the 8:00am next Saturday to start your devotion. 2

ST. ANTHONY OF PADUA CHURCH THE POPE S PRAYER INTENTION FOR MAY The Mission of the Laity: That the lay faithful may fulfill their specific mission by responding with creativity to the challenges that face the world today. St. Paul writes in his First Letter to the Corinthians: Now you are Christ s body and individually parts of it. Some people God has designated in the church to be first apostles; second, prophets; third, teachers; then, might deeds; then, gifts of healing, assistance, administration, and varieties of tongues. (Vv.27-28). Consider the first people Jesus called to follow Him: fishermen, a tax collector, a zealot ordinary laymen. Consider how many of the saints were essentially ordinary people. You are baptized into the Body of Christ for a purpose and countless saints have gone before you in faithful service to Jesus, living out His call to be the salt of the earth the light of the world a city on a mountain which cannot be hidden. (Matthew 5:13-16). Every member of the Body from the newly baptized infant to the shut-in who can only pray and watch Mass on Television has a part to play in Christ s work to redeem the world. Much of this work is the daytoday unseen, little tasks done with great love and fidelity: the raising of children, the honest day s labor, showing kindness to strangers, making a hidden sacrifice for the sake of another, and so on. We are the living stones (1 st Peter 2:5) which build up the Church, not only in the sense of bricks in the wall, but also as laborers adding on to it. As a little salt flavors a great deal of food, as a little light dispels a room full of darkness, as a city on a hill is seen from miles around, so each of us is to follow and serve Christ in the way only we can, living our Catholic faith in the world as an ambassador for Our Lord. Reflection by Fr. Jacob Boddicker, SJ PARMA, OHIO SEMINARIANS OF THE WEEK This week, we pray for newly ordained deacons. They often have no one to talk to about their pain and the heavy burden on their hearts. We can change that together. There is a crisis raging in our state. The heroin epidemic is wreaking havoc on hundreds and thousands of individuals and families across our region. Learn more so that you can be that person others can turn to in their time of need. Go to: www.greaterthanheroin.com. Understanding is greater than this crisis. Together, we are greater than heroin. Each of us can be a source of hope, help and healing to someone in need. CATHOLIC GLOSSARY Martyr: The word martyr comes from the Greek word meaning witness. The martyrs of the Church are the men and women who witnessed to Jesus Christ and the truth of the Gospel by voluntarily dying for the faith rather than denying it.
