In each of our readings for this weekend feast the word covenant appears. The word covenant refers to the bond between God and ourselves and the bond that we are to have with each other. Jesus is the source of the bond. Jesus tells us, This is my blood, the blood of the new covenant which is poured out for many. Each time we receive the Eucharist, we recommit ourselves to this covenant bond. It must be a true sign. We are turned off by phony signs of affection or patronizing words that are empty of meaning. We have harsh words for such hypocritical behavior. It s worth reflecting upon whether we too could be accused of doing the same when we receive the Eucharist. Our reception of the Eucharist must always be a sign of our irreversible pledge to be faithful to God and loving toward one another. If we are not, then we are empty signs. 1

THE MOST HOLY BODY & BLOOD OF CHRIST JUNE 3, 2018 CELEBRATING THE SAINTS Saint Anthony, Abbot (+356) Anthony, a highborn Egyptian, inherited his parents considerable estate at the age of twenty. When one day he heard a sermon on the Lord s words to the rich young man, If you wish to be perfect, go sell what you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come follow me. (Matt. 19:21) his response was immediate. He sold everything, gave the money to the poor, and embraced an austere life in a tomb on the outskirts of the town. Soon the devil began to assault Anthony, tempting him with what he had left behind, hinting that his penances were too harsh. Anthony did not waver. Then demons came in the form of beasts and scratched, kicked, and beat Anthony. When at long last they withdrew, he saw our Lord in a vision: Where were you, Lord? Anthony asked. Why didn t you appear right from the beginning to stop my pains? And Jesus answered, I was there, Anthony, I was waiting to see you fight. Since you held yourself well and with the aid of my grace you were not conquered, I will always be your help and I will make you famous everywhere. Anthony went to a mountain solitude across from modern Faiyum, Egypt. He led the hermits who gathered to be near him. In later years, Anthony settled near the Red Sea, leaving his hut only to preach against the Arian heretics. According to Blessed John Henry Newman, despite his battles with the devils, Anthony was ever full of confidence, divine peace, and cheerfulness. Saint Anthony, Abbot, lived to an advance age dying in the year 356 AD. His feast day is celebrated on January 17 th. THANK YOU FOR PARTICIPATING! Thank you to all those that supported the Knights of Columbus Five Guys fundraiser on Thursday, May 17, 2018. We had sales of $867.32 and received back $216.83 (25%). The proceeds will be used to help fund programs at Camp Cheerful for those with developmental disabilities. Thank you once again! MARRIAGE AND FAMILY Need a place to go for vacation as a family? Check out Catholic Family Land. https://afc.org/holy-family -fests/. 2 FATHER S DAY MASS CARDS Father s Day Mass Cards will be sold after most Masses this weekend, June 2/3 and the following weekend June 9/10. Cards may also be purchased at the rectory Monday thru Friday during regular business hours. This is a beautiful way to honor your Dad, living or deceased, by remembering him with a special Mass. Father s Day is Sunday June 17. Cards for the living are $2.00 and cards for the deceased are $1.00. Seminarians of the Week This week, we pray for Mitchell Carson, David Chojnacki, and Alexander Clark. WEEKLY MASS REMINDER The main elements of which the Eucharistic Prayer consists may be distinguished from one another in this way: a) The Thanksgiving (expressed especially in the Preface), in which the Priest, in the name of the whole of the holy people, glorifies God the Father and gives thanks to Him for the whole work of salvation or for some particular aspect of it, according to the varying day, festivity, or time of year. To be continued from the General Instruction of the Roman Missal, 79a. FINALIZING SUMMER PLANS? ST. ANTHONY OF PADUA CHURCH WALL OF HONOR Many parishioners and their family members are serving in the United States Military, as pictured in the lobby of the Church. Please pray for their safety, along with the safety of our Parma Police Officers, Firefighters, and EMTs. Thank you for your Service!! HEY CATHOLIC! DID YOU KNOW Did you know that the month of June is typically dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus? The Diocesan Center of the Enthronement of the Sacred Heart of Jesus will celebrate the annual Mass of Reparation to the Sacred Heart of Jesus on Friday, June 8, at St. Therese (5276 E. 105th St., Garfield Heights) at 7:00 pm. Come and honor the Sacred Heart of Jesus on this holy day. ENTHRONEMENT OF THE SACRED HEART Friday, June 8, is the Feast of the Sacred Heart, making this an excellent time of year to have your home enthroned to the Sacred Heart. Choose to honor Him by making Him King of your home. Please contact Patricia Kaine at 216-789-7230 or by email pkaine@cox.net. WEEKLY WORK OF MERCY Make a Holy Hour before our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament for the conversion of sinners to the heart of Jesus CATHOLIC GLOSSARY Tabernacle: A tabernacle is the fixed, locked receptacle used to hold the Blessed Sacrament being reserved. The concept of reserving the Blessed Sacrament dates back to the early days of the Church to ensure the sacrament for the sick and dying and later for adoration. When the tabernacle doors are shut, it means the Blessed Sacrament is present. Therefore, whenever you pass before a closed tabernacle, you should always genuflect on your right knee in adoration of Jesus. A good rule to live by: if you are not 5 minutes early, your are already 5 minutes late. CHRISTIAN SPIRITUALITY CORNER When you look at the crucifix, you understand how much Jesus loved you then. When you look at the Sacred Host, you understand how much Jesus loves you now. St. Teresa of Kolkata FOOD PANTRY The requested items this week are laundry detergent, applesauce and canned fruit.
