Have we just heard a horror story? Given the depth of emotions, some might think so. Have we heard a story about senseless suffering and death? Yes, that is certainly true also. In the end it is both of these things and much more. It is a story of heroism, cowardice, greed, and power gone badly. But above all it is a love story. It is the greatest love story that the world has ever known or will ever know. It is God s love story for us. Jesus goes to His death for no other reason than love. Love drives the universe. It is still the most powerful force that humanity has ever discovered. We are made for love. Without it we are nothing. No matter who we are, what we own, how many people we have under our authority, if we have not love, we are nothing. This week, we will once again hear the love story of God, told to us throughout Holy week celebrations. May we open our needy and love-starved hearts to take in the nourishing images that will be placed before us. May we create the space needed to hear and see the love of God, made flesh in Jesus Christ, the One who still loves us to death. 1

PALM SUNDAY OF THE PASSION OF THE LORD MARCH 25, 2018 CELEBRATING THE SAINTS Saint Crispin of Viterbo, Lay Brother (1668-1750) Peter Fioretti came from peasant stock in Viterbo, Italy. From a young age, he was devote, but also slight of build; the villagers nicknamed him Il santarello, the little saint. In due time, he joined the Capuchins as a lay brother, taking the name Crispin after the patron of cobblers, the trade he had studied before his entry. At first Crispin labored in the garden, kitchen, and the infirmary of the friary. When he moved to Orvieto, he became the quaestor or the one who begs for alms. With unfailing cheer, he begged for the Capuchins, and, in time, for all the poor of the city. When his superiors sought to replace Crispin with another brother, the housewives refused to give him their alms. Crispin was hastily brought back as quaestor. He worked wonders, notably the miraculous multiplication of bread. Wealthy nobles and learned prelates hearkened to the humble brother s counsel. Seeking to emulate Capuchin Saint Felix of Cantalice, Crispin frequently referred to himself as a beast of burden. Once, when someone asked him why he went about bareheaded, he replied, An ass does not wear a hat. Crispin died at the age of eighty-two in Rome in 1750. He was canonized by Pope Saint John Paul II in 1982. His body lies in the Capuchin Church of the Immaculate Conception in Rome. His feast day is celebrated on May 19 th. SOCIAL CONCERNS COMMISSION A sincere THANK YOU to all those who baked for the West Side Catholic Center luncheon on March 20, 2018. The many hot lunches that we served consisted of shepherds pie, salad, rolls with butter, and also included a generous portion of your fresh baked pastries. All were most appreciative. Remember to mark your calendar for our next serving date, Tuesday, May 15, 2018. Thank you again for your continued support and generosity to the West Side Catholic Center. VOLUNTEERS NEEDED Our Bingo program is in need of volunteers to help as instant bingo ticket sellers and floor workers. You do not have to commit to working every week, just a few hours of your time even once a month will help. No experience necessary! To learn more please contact Fr. Dale at the rectory (440) 842-2666 or stop down at Bingo any Thursday and speak to Gerry. The Bingo program is a vital help in meeting our parish s ever increasing financial obligations. Please consider lending a hand. LENTEN COMMUNAL PENANCE SERVICE This afternoon, Sunday 25 March at 4:00 p.m. is our yearly Lenten Communal Penance Service. This service of song, scripture, communal preparation to receive the Sacrament of Penance with individual confession and absolution is the perfect completion of your Lenten Observance. Several priests will be available to hear your confession. Remaining times for confessions are Tuesday, March 27 from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. in the afternoon and following the Good Friday Services. ENCOUNTER OUR NEIGHBORS We encounter Jesus this week in Jerusalem, a community He knew well. We prayerfully enter our own communities too, encountering those who are hungry and thirsty, those who need our help. How does our Lenten journey motivate us to serve those we meet in our daily lives? ***Rice Bowl donations can be returned on Holy Thursday evening before Mass or before any of the other Holy Week Services by placing your donation in the boxes provided in the lobby of the church. Late donations can be turned in at the rectory office during normal business hours. LIVING STATIONS OF THE CROSS The St. Anthony 8th graders will be performing the Living Stations of the Cross on Holy Thursday. Please show your support for all their hard work in showing us the emotion behind the Passion and Death of Jesus. Weather permitting, the procession from the school to the church will start at 1:00 with stations to follow. We hope you can join us for this memorable event. EVANGELIZATION TIP Invite family members and friends to attend the Holy Week celebrations at the parish. These are high holy days. We should celebrate them together. 2

This November St. Anthony of Padua Parish will have 48 of our young people celebrating the Sacrament of Confirmation. This summer they will begin their Confirmation preparation by completing service work for the church and the community. Starting in September they will meet for seven Sundays leading up to Confirmation in November. We are in need of Confirmation catechists. If you are interested in volunteering or want to find out more about the program, please call Randy Harris at 440-842-2666. 4 SPECIAL PROGRAM OF THE DIVINE MERCY All parishioners are invited to attend a special program on Wednesday, April 4 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. in the main church in preparation for Divine Mercy Sunday. The evening will begin with a viewing of an extraordinary documentary film, The Face of Mercy, narrated by Jim Caviezel who portrayed Jesus in The Passion of the Christ. This stirring film weaves together theology and history with remarkable testimonials, some of which include a woman who found freedom in forgiveness after seeing her family wiped out by genocide; a former NFL linebacker who walked away from football to share Christ s mercy with the homeless; and a young widow who chose mercy towards her husband s killer. These testimonies help viewers reflect on the things that prevent them from forgiving and showing mercy as Christ did. From the smallest hurts to major tragedies, we can realize that Divine Mercy is alive in our modern world it is present and can transform the world. A moving, sung version of the Divine Mercy Chaplet will follow the movie and refreshments and fellowship will wrap up the evening. You are encouraged to invite family, friends and neighbors. Bring a rosary, although some will be available. This program is sponsored by The Women s Faith Ministry of St. Anthony of Padua. CHURCH ETIQUETTE WITH MONSIGNOR MANNERS Monsignor Manners says: A Catholic should take the innermost seat when sitting in the pew. This encourages others to join them in prayer. If a Catholic needs to sit on the end, he or she should stand and move into the aisle when others intend to enter the pew.

CHRISTIAN SPIRITUALITY CORNER Therefore Easter is not simply one feast among others, but the Feast of feasts, the Solemnity of solemnities, just as the Eucharist is the Sacrament of sacraments (the Great Sacrament). St. Athanasius calls Easter the Great Sunday' and the Eastern Churches call Holy Week the Great Week. The mystery of the Resurrection, in which Christ crushed death, permeates with its powerful energy our old time, until all is subjected to him. Catechism of the Catholic Church, 1169. (http://www.vatican.va/archive/ ccc_css/archive/catechism/p2s1c2a1.htm#1168) SEMINARIANS OF THE WEEK This week, we pray for Luke McNeill, Joseph Menkhaus, Jr., and Edward Miller. BLOOD DRIVE St. Anthony Knights of Columbus will be sponsoring a blood drive on April 8 from 9:00am-1:30pm. The Lifeshare blood mobile will be parked in front of the school during the event. K of C members will be in the church lobby to register donors after all masses on March 24 and 25. Please help us achieve our goal. Remember, it s about life! ECCLESIASTICAL HERALDRY Ecclesiastical Heraldry refers to the use of heraldry within the Christian Church and clergy. Typically, diocese and bishops have coats of arms that identify them. From the diocesan website: The arms of the Diocese of Cleveland are based on the family arms of General Moses Cleaveland (1754 1806), who surveyed and founded the city that bears his name. To the Cleaveland arms which divide the shield with a line like an inverted V (per chevron), and charge it with a similar shape drawn with semicircular indentations along its edge (a chevron engrailed) the Diocese adds three small Crosses, the arms of which are crossed again (cross crosslets). The shield is painted black (sable) above the chevron; below, it is white with small black spots meant to represent ermine, a fur typically used to line the robes of royalty and nobility. The crosses and the chevron are counterchanged; that is, they are painted black where the shield is ermine, and ermine where the shield is black.
