St. John the Baptist Parish Plymouth September 3, 2017 Dear Parishioners: Last Monday I had the honor of welcoming staff and faculty back to St. John the Baptist Catholic School for the beginning of a new academic year; the children return next Tuesday, starting their new year with an all-school Mass. As part of my message, I challenged all present to view their mission as individuals and as an educational institution to be to promote the comprehensive formation of our students into disciples. I lifted my lines from the section on Catholic education in The Aparecida Document, the pastoral plan which emerged from the fifth General Conference of CELAM (the Episcopal Conference of Latin America) in 2007. I d read that document because it s been described as a good roadmap for understanding the thinking of Pope Francis: as Cardinal Archbishop Jorge Bergoglio of Buenos Aires, he was its chief editor. When I read that particular section for the first time, I knew in my mind that it was something I had to share with this group on the first day back. But when I stepped into the Church hall and saw the six-point counsel Principal Amy Nelson had displayed on the smart board, I knew in my heart that my message was spot-on: Smile often Think positive Be grateful Laugh out loud Love others Dream big I mean, really: don t those six characteristics describe Pope Francis to a T? As I scanned that list, my mind went back to one of Pope Francis s early texts, the Apostolic Exhortation Evangelii Gaudium [The Joy of the Gospel]. In his writing, Pope Francis often employs a linguistic style one hardly expects to hear from the Vatican, which usually sounds so stilted and formal and, frankly, church-ish; and he certainly did so in Evangelii Gaudium. At one point in the English translation we read of... a defeatism which turns us into querulous and disillusioned pessimists, sourpusses. Knowing that English is not the pope s first language, I was curious to know how the Spanish version put that last word. It came out con cara de vinagre [with a face of vinegar]! Wow!!! It seems to me that these six admonitions are good not just for teachers in the classroom, but for all of us who aspire to be disciples of Jesus Christ. We should certainly model them for all our children, whether in parochial schools or in our Faith Formation programs. * * * * * * * * * Even as Hurricane Harvey was continuing to unleash itself on the coastal areas of Texas, the Chancery Office at the Archdiocese sent out a recommendation early last week that people looking for a way to help should contact Catholic Charities USA. You can make on-line donations at https://catholiccharitiesusa.org/ or contact them by mail at Catholic Charities USA 2050 Ballenger Ave., Suite 400 Alexandria, VA 22314 The Chancery didn t say anything about either a parish or an archdiocesan special collection at this time. Once things have quieted down and concrete needs are identified, we might want to consider choosing a specific project and helping out with second collections (like many parishes did with Katrina). Thank you. Father Phil

22nd Sunday in Ordinary Time September 3, 2017 St. John the Baptist School is excited to be a Project Lead the Way (PLTW) school! PLTW's mission is to prepare students for the global economy by providing K-12 STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) programs for schools to utilize. The program offers a problem-based curriculum combined with teacher professional development. It is affiliated with MSOE (Milwaukee School of Engineering). The hands-on PLTW classroom experience changes the way students experience school. Project Lead the Way will be implemented in 5K through 5 th grade during the 2017-2018 school year. Here are a few benefits of being a Project Lead the Way school: Students are engaged in cross-disciplinary activities that spark a lifelong love of learning and build knowledge and skills in areas including computer science, engineering, and biomedical science. Students develop essential skills such as problem solving, critical and creative thinking, communication, collaboration, and perseverance. Students are more likely to consider careers as scientists, technology experts, engineers, mathematicians, healthcare providers and researchers. The Project Lead the Way program compliments our new science series called, Exploring Science by National Geographic Learning. This series is built for the Next Generation Science Standards; a robust, forward-looking K-12 science program used to guide teaching and learning in science for the next generation. Here is what is new: Focusing on the doing of science, rather than the knowledge of science facts Incorporating engineering design at all grade levels Curriculum shift towards fewer standards per grade, but each covered in greater depth We would also like to take this opportunity to thank our generous school donors including SJB Alumni, Christian Women and those who gave anonymously. These generous donations helped make these curricular enhancements possible. If you are interested in learning more about St. John the Baptist School, or would like to take a tour, please contact Principal Amy Nelson at (920) 893-5961. Principal Amy E. Nelson

St. John the Baptist Parish Plymouth September 3, 2017 The members of the St. Vincent de Paul Society are committed to visiting people in need and working with them to resolve their problems. They are one of the important outreach ministries of St. John the Baptist Parish and give witness to the Lord s special concern for all who experience difficulties. We thank them as well as all our parishioners who, on behalf of the Church, reach out to all God s people. Vincentians do this week after week, year after year, often making a lifetime commitment to help others. We pray that their example may lead others to a life of service. St. Vincent de Paul Plymouth Outreach Regardless of age, race, sexual orientation, or religion; Vincentians see the face of Christ in those we serve. We serve the following Sheboygan County communities: Plymouth, Elkhart Lake, Greenbush, Glenbeulah, Cascade, and Waldo. Grow Spiritually. Help those in Need. Develop Friendships. LIVE YOUR FAITH. Consider joining the: St. Vincent de Paul Youth Leadership Conference Since 1833 the Society of Saint Vincent de Paul has been serving those in need. Despite being only 20 years old, Frederic Ozanam, along with his college friends and the guidance of Sister Rosalie Rendu, set out to put his faith into practice ministering to the needs of the poor living in Paris. It was an ambitious undertaking that continues today in 149 countries worldwide. We invite young leaders entering into their senior year of high school through college, to join Frederic Ozanam and learn how they, too, can practice their faith right here in our community. Join us for an informational youth conference open house to learn more about the Society and the poor living among us. Discover ways to grow spiritually, develop friendships and gain important leadership skills by developing and overseeing programs that address the needs of the poor. (1 Cor 10:17) Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion bring the greatest gift the Body of Christ to Catholics who are homebound or in nursing homes. It is a comfort and a source of healing to receive Holy Communion when one cannot attend Mass. September 30, 2017 This 2 mile walk and 5K run takes place at Sheboygan South High School and begins at 10:00.
