1 St. John the Baptist Parish The Epiphany of the Lord January 6, 2019 Dear Parishioners: Happy Feast of the Epiphany! Sometimes, I think we use words so casually or conventionally that we miss out on their full import. Epiphany is a case in point. Of course, we know all about the Magi coming from the East in search of the new-born King of the Jews, their encounter with King Herod, their discovery of the infant Jesus in Bethlehem, their presentation of gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh, all as reported in the Gospel of St. Matthew. So, obviously, the Epiphany is most certainly part of the Christmas story scripturally and Christmas Season liturgically. But that s not all that is to be said about the Feast of the Epiphany. In The Catechism of the Catholic Church we read: The Epiphany is the manifestation of Jesus as Messiah of Israel, Son of God, and Savior of the World. What is merely hinted at in the persons of the magi (who, being from the East, were not Jews but Gentiles) is brought out clearly in the New Testament missionary activity and writings of St. Paul, most powerfully in his Letter to the Romans: Jesus is not only the long-awaited Messiah for the Jewish people, but for the Gentiles, as well in other words, the whole world! The Catechism is only echoing what the Church has proclaimed for almost two thousand years! We still haven t exhausted the possibilities for the Feast of the Epiphany. After mentioning a Christian festival commemorating the manifestation of Christ to the gentiles in the persons of the Magi, Webster s Encyclopedic Unabridged Dictionary defines small-e epiphany as follows: a sudden, intuitive perception of or insight into the reality or essential meaning of something, usually initiated by some simple, homely, or commonplace occurrence or experience. It seems to me that a sudden, intuitive perception or insight into the reality or essential meaning of something can be put quite simply as a graced moment. Furthermore, it seems to me that God gives each of us such graced moments or epiphanies multiple times each day, manifestations (i.e., intuitive perceptions or insights ) of God s presence, God s power, God s mercy, in the form of a friend s voice, a loved one s touch, a song, a sight, an exquisitely crafted phrase. One of those somethings that simply stops you dead in your tracks... or could, if we d only pay attention to it. This is what I was talking about in my homily the other day when I suggested we all take a page from Mary s playbook [Luke 2:19] and keep these things, reflecting on them in our hearts. We are called to be holy not some much by praying longer or louder, or by spending more time in Church, but by looking for God s little and not-so-little epiphanies in our lives, acknowledging them when we do recognize them for what they are, and thanking God for manifesting Himself to us through all those somethings. St. John the Baptist Cemetery is the final resting place for generations of area Catholics. The oldest recorded grave dates from Within the cemetery stands a statue depicting the crucifixion; an image of Jesus on the cross, with the forms of Mary, Mary Magdalene and the disciple John standing at the foot of the cross. The statue had become weathered through time, but thanks to a recent donation the statue is now restored to its former beauty.

They will work hard, serve tirelessly, think deeply, celebrate Mass and build relationships. 4 School News St. John the Baptist Catholic School - 3K-Grade 8 Message from the Principal, It is always amazing to see the progress made from the beginning of the school year until now. What a joy it is to see the smile on a 3 rd grade student s face when they know their multiplication facts or the words of, I can do it all by myself heard from a PreK student s mouth! As the year continues, I look forward to witnessing the neat learning opportunities to come. I feel privileged to have a dedicated staff to work with and such enthusiastic students that demonstrate a love of learning. The Finance Council (FC) is currently in the process of establishing a new sub-committee to focus on addressing the current deficit budget by identifying long-term, sustainable solutions. The FC is also reviewing tuition rates for the school year. The guiding principles determining rates are: Ensuring that Catholic education at SJB remains affordable for families desiring a faith-based education for their children. The current cost of education for each child and the amount of parish subsidy which underwrites this cost. Maintaining competitiveness, where possible, to area Catholic and private school tuition rates.
