2 St. John the Baptist Plymouth July 9, 2017 Dear Parishioners: God is good! Oh, God is SO good!!! You don t know it yet, but I am a reader. I love to read: history of religion, sociology, African-American literature, war, Islam, ecology, biographies... I m pretty eclectic when it comes to what I read. And I readily admit: my eyes are bigger than my stomach. Meaning: I will read a review of a book, or hear someone recommend a particular title, or find an interesting footnote in something I m reading that promises deeper detail about a specific topic. And I ll put the book in my amazon.com shopping cart. (Sometimes, after the heat of the moment has passed, I ll delete a recent entry from the cart; but more often than not, when I ve got enough to earn free shipping, I ll place the order. The result: I have a shelf-and-a -half of un-read books waiting for me to get at... some day. Maybe it ll be in retirement. (I dumped a dozen or so books of this category when I made the move to SJB/STA. Or should I say: I left them in my office at St. Dominic for Fr. Matthew or Fr. Gideon to do with as they see fit.) Among these books are titles that I ve started once or twice but either gave up on or came upon a more urgent title to read. I d actually made pretty decent progress in some of these titles and really do intend to return to them some day. But I have to admit: that day isn t exactly right around the corner. A biography of Maimonides, for example. Or The Complete Works of William Shakespeare. Or Dante s The Divine Comedy. I was checking s last week when one of those sites that regularly bombards me with useless information drifted into my line of fire. I was just ready to consign it to the trash bin when the subject line made me sit and take notice: Dante s Divine Comedy. Curious, I opened the message and found it to be a promotion for a five-cd course on The Divine Comedy! The course is being offered by a Sister Mary Clemente Davlin, O.P., who, the promotional literature assures me, is... a brilliant teacher,... as engaging as she is erudite. And the light switch went on: Hey!!! I m driving south really far south in a couple of weeks. [The ultimate destination is the Panhandle of Florida, where my oldest brother s two boys have conspired to hold our triennial family reunion on the last weekend in July. To make the prospect of driving into the belly of the beast in the hottest and muggiest time of the year even remotely attractive of course, I love my brothers! And even my loopy nephews!!! And I do look forward to seeing them, and their wives, and their children (some for the very first time!) I decided to drop in on a couple of West Point classmates en route: Butch & Pat in Wilmington, NC, and Michael & Ellen in Beaufort, SC.] What better way to keep my mind occupied over some long stretches of driving than by having a good book to read... or study. So, I ordered the CD course which, if it s organized according to Dante s opus magnus, will begin with Inferno [hell], move into Purgatorio [any guesses?], and wind up in Paradiso [paradise or heaven] sort of emblematic of the whole trip, start to finish. The CDs are supposed to get here this week. (To hedge my bet, I m taking other reading material with me. Just in case...) So, I ll either show up for work on August 3rd full of new insights, courtesy of Sr. Mary Clemente, and bubbling over with anecdotes about The Divine Comedy played out in real time, or sadder but wiser, and a little well-done from my encounter with the Inferno. Meanwhile, you have Fr. John for two weeks. Enjoy! Father Phil

3 The Fourteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time July 9, 2017 God is not unjust; he will not forget your work and the love you have shown him as you have helped his people and continue to help them. (Hebrews 6:10) Thank you to everyone who supported our parish teens who traveled to Kentucky on mission trip. Whether it was through monetary donations, reassuring words, or thoughtful prayers, you helped to make the 2017 Mission Trip a great success! Participants duties ranged from painting houses, weeding gardens, building renovation, cleaning, et cetera. In addition to service work the participants were exposed to unfamiliar cultures, giving them a new understanding of the lives of those around us. We hope that all participants continue their mission of service and charity here in Sheboygan County for years to come! St. John the Baptist Catholic School After School Childcare TEMPORARY PART TIME POSITION September November 2017 Our after-school childcare program is looking for an energetic, creative individual who enjoys engaging with children. This part -time position is temporary, at 5 days per week for approximately three months. Hours are typically 2:00 pm 6:00 pm. Applications are available in the back of church and from the parish office. For additional information, contact Principal, Amy Nelson at anelson@sjbplymouth.org Parish Stewardship As we close our parish fiscal year (July 1, 2016 June 30, 2017) we thank our finance council members for sharing their expertise and many hours of time on behalf of the Parish. St. John the Baptist Finance Council Fr. Philip Reifenberg, Jim Birenbaum, Bill Barbieur, Don Sager, Tom Paul, Patricia Huberty The SJB Finance Council is a consultative body in parish financial matters. The council provides advice and guidance to the Pastor in the administration of parish assets, monitors the financial condition of the parish and prepares the annual budget and reports. Committees reporting to the Finance Council include: Building and Grounds, Cemetery, and Investments. Parish offertory information for the close of the fiscal year, and the beginning of the new fiscal year will be published in next week s bulletin. St. Vincent de Paul Meetings are held the 2nd and 4th Tuesday of each month. The next meeting will be July 11 at 5:00pm in the St. John the Baptist Parish Office.
