1 St. John the Baptist Parish 8th Sunday of Ordinary Time March 3, 2019 Dear Parishioners: If I had a dollar for every person who s muttered under his/her breath to me, I wish Winter were over!, I d be as wealthy as our private snow plow firms have become this year! Every time I turn around it seems they re here plowing, salting, re-plowing, removing old piles of snow to make room for the new piles of snow, etc., etc. January which, if memory serves me correctly, wasn t really all that bad had eleven occasions on which plowing and/or salting and/or snow removal occurred at both STA/St. Fridolin ($2,500) and SJB ($10,000). I shudder to think what the bills for February will look like! But we re now into the month of March. We ve already entered into Meteorological Spring. (For the purists among you, the Vernal Equinox and Astronomical Spring will be here quickly enough!) One has to believe that Existential Spring you know: birds chirping, bees buzzing, flowers blooming, cars roaring around Road America can t be far behind. Regardless of what your personal benchmark for Spring is Easter, the last frost, the return of the Snowbirds I m sure we ll all be complaining about the heat and humidity soon enough. 2 SJB New Gathering Space Update It is hard to miss the changes already taking place in the new gathering space and vestibule. Thanks to a generous, anonymous donation, a donation from the KC s and memorial gifts, the scope of the updates has been expanded. Here is a recap of the plans: Room changes The current usher room will be refitted with wardrobes and cupboards and a new confessional screen to serve as priest vesting and confessional room. The current confessional will become an usher room and storage space. The current sacristy will be shared by sacristans for preparations for Mass and be re-fitted to serve as a small kitchenette. New Carpeting (modular carpet tiles) for the gathering space, vestibule, hallway and adjacent rooms. This will allow for easy maintenance and replacement of small areas should the need arise. Furniture - The new gathering space will be equipped a variety of furniture types that will lend itself to fellowship gatherings, prayer and study groups. This area will be available for parents (care-givers) who need to temporarily step out of church with a small child, and over-flow for heavily attended services. The furniture will be obtained from a variety of sources, including new, used and donations. Drinking Fountains (aka bubblers ) - Two new ADA compliant drinking fountains, one with water bottle filling station have already been installed. Mass Intentions Reminder Mass intentions at St. John the Baptist are scheduled on an ongoing basis up to one year in advance. Mass intentions are now being scheduled up until March If you have questions, or if you would like to have a Mass offered for a loved one, please stop by the parish office, or call There is a customary $10 stipend per individual Mass intention. The practice of offering Masses for others, living or deceased, is a long standing tradition in the Catholic Church. When we face the death of someone, even a person who is not Catholic, to have a Mass offered for the repose of their soul and to offer our prayers is beneficial and comforting. SJB Greeter Ministry Needs You! Being an SJB Mass Greeter is a wonderful way to give back to SJB or earn service hours for Faith Formation and school. Families and Faith Formation Classes are encouraged to serve together. Arrive 30 minutes prior to Mass, and welcome those that come to SJB to worship each weekend. You pick the days and times that work best for your schedule (through an online calendar.) 3 Parishioner Offerings (Envelopes) Building & Grounds School News St. John the Baptist Catholic School - 3K-Grade 8 A Message from the Principal We are blessed to have so many individuals that are willing to share their gifts and talents with our students. Volunteers are so valuable to have, particularly in a school setting. This year we have volunteers helping with our Guided Reading program, working in our Learning Support area, assisting teachers and students with auction projects, shelving books in our library and so much more. It is nice to have volunteers sharing careers and/or special talents and skills with our students as well. It is always fun for our students to get a taste of a career or skill they may be less familiar with. If anyone is interested in sharing time as a volunteer in the school, Safe Guarding is needed before volunteering. All collections taken during Offertory will benefit their trip to Nashville. Friday Fish Fry, March 8 th : Come and enjoy the first SJB Fish Fry! Proceeds from this Fish Fry go to cover costs for our trip to Nashville in June! Ash Wednesday Mass March 6 th at 7:00 pm All Faith Formation students/families are strongly encouraged to attend Mass. Mass is in place of class so that you can begin our Lenten journey together as a family through worship. Let s make a Conversion of our Hearts this Lent. SJB Book Discussion Group The book discussions around, The Biggest Lie in the History of Christianity by Matthew Kelly are wrapping up this week and next. We are extra grateful to those who are connecting with fellow parishioners these few weeks in a way that both lets us know our neighbor a bit better and grounds us in God s love and presence too. Over 30 people participated in the discussion groups. Faith Formation Committee Update The Faith Formation Committee continues to seek out opportunities for our parishioners to grow in their faith. Are you looking to get involved or have cool faith formation ideas? Want to check out our committee? Our next meeting is Monday, March 11, 2019 at 5:30 pm in the Faith Formation office located in the school. SAVE the DATE: Saturday, May 4 at SJB the New Evangelization Summit.
