1 St. John the Baptist Parish Plymouth October 21, 2018 Dear Parishioners, As I write this [on Tuesday, the 16th], I m thinking about the rest of this week and wondering what kind of shape I ll be in by this time next week [Tuesday, the 23rd]. Christine, Lisa, Paige and I will have been wrapped up in the Amazing Parish conference I wrote about in last week s bulletin from Wednesday through Friday afternoon; I will have had back-toback funerals on Saturday (11:00 a.m. at SJB and 1:30 p.m. at St. John the Evangelist in Kohler); and from Sunday evening to Monday afternoon I will have been at my monthly Jesus Caritas meeting at the Schoenstatt Center in Waukesha. Between the 9:30 Mass Sunday morning and Jesus Caritas Sunday evening I ll be trying to squeeze in the taped version of Friday s on-line University of Dayton class (also mentioned in last week s bulletin) that I will have missed because of the Amazing Parish conference. (A word about Saturday s funeral at SJE: it is for one of their parishioners, Connie Stevens, who with her husband, John, has lived a stone s throw from STA in Cedar Community of Elkhart Lake. Although members of SJE, Connie and John regularly came to Mass at STA during the Summer. Several weeks ago, Connie asked me to come to their home to anoint her. As her condition worsened, I took Communion to her and John a couple of times a week. We talked about death, and I reviewed the plans she d made for her funeral Mass with her. She asked if I would be a con-celebrant if my schedule permitted, and I agreed. Last Sunday afternoon, one of her daughters called to tell me Connie was slipping quickly and asked me to come over to anoint her for a final time. John and their four children were present, along with some of the grandkids. We prayed together, I anointed her and commended her to the Lord. Connie passed Monday. I was called on Tuesday and asked if I could take the funeral; the priest whom Connie had intended to be the principal celebrant had a conflicting commitment. How could I refuse?) Next week is going to be pretty full, too, with all kinds of regular and extraordinary meetings including one with Colleen Moore regarding the University of Notre Dame s Echo program (more much more! about this later, I hope) concluding with a Town Hall meeting at STA after the 5:30 Mass next Saturday and a Town Hall meeting at SJB after the 9:30 Mass next Sunday. Please plan to attend these meetings. There is a lot of information to be shared with you. What makes stretches like this tolerable, even exciting, is the adrenaline rush that comes from things like the Packers victory over San Francisco last Monday night and the pure pleasure of watching the two huge perfectly-shaped maple trees in Ann Buechel Haack s yard directly across Lincoln Street from STA s front doors as they gradually turn from green to gold with the deepening of Fall. 2 The Sacrament of Reconciliation (Confession) The Grace of Transformation Through the Sacrament of Reconciliation our lives gradually are transformed; a turning from sin to a life that is pleasing to God. In this sacrament God strengthens our moral conscience and gives us the graces needed to keep us on a straight course toward Him. We can t expect to produce good fruit simply by believing the Word, while refusing to change. Transformation is a lifelong experience and develops over a period of time. In transformation, a change occurs from our sinful lives to a life truly in love with Jesus. Private confessions are heard from 9:30am -10:00am on the 2nd and 4th Saturday of each month in the reconciliation room at St. John the Baptist. Private confessions will be heard next at 9:30am on Saturday, October 27, 2018 We come to understand the power of the Sacrament by reading the story of a woman accused of adultery. (John 8: 3-11). Her life of sin was transformed by Jesus words, Go now and leave your life of sin. This woman s life was transformed. Our effort to know God and do His will invites the Holy Spirit into our lives. Transform your life by receiving the healing Sacrament of Reconciliation. 3 School News There are many benefits to receiving a well-rounded education. It is a pleasure to walk the hallways of St. John the Baptist School and to observe the learning taking place in each classroom! This past month alone, I had the joy of listening to students memorize prayers, learn new songs in music, be engineers and work through the design process, light up when they grasp a new concept in math class, comprehend a critical thinking question during guided reading time and of course observing the elation that a child felt upon completing a project successfully. Kudos to the staff for their dedication toward academic excellence! Faith Formation News Calling all high school and college aged young adults! You are cordially invited to join other high school and college students to a viewing of some of the Ignatian Family Teach-In for Justice (IFTJ). IFTJ is an annual event held to commemorate the Jesuits and laywomen who were martyred in 1989, to call for an end to unjust institutions, and to reflect on the Church's commitment to justice. Each year, thousands of high school and college students, clergy and lay people have gathered for the Teach-in. Come hear BISH- OP GEORGE V. MURRY, S.J. St. John the Baptist School is a treasure and is truly a place that I feel privileged to be part of. Yours in Christ, Mrs. Amy Nelson Principal Prayer and Worship Committee Update The Prayer and Worship committee comes together to plan the parish s seasonal worship. Our purpose is to create an engaging place and foster dynamic worship for our faith community, so that we can most fully celebrate the Eucharist. Using the Liturgical calendar as our foundation, we develop themes based on the ongoing cycles of the church. What is Liturgy? Liturgy comes from the Greek word leitourgia. Which means the peoples work. It is the work of this committee to make our traditions, our beliefs, and our faith come alive for the faith community through the Mass and other liturgical celebrations. It is our vision to invite the community into full, active, conscious participation in the liturgical life of the parish. We provide leadership, organization, coordination, formation, communication and evaluation for all liturgical ministries. The committee consists of representatives from each of the ministries: Greeters, Ushers, Lector, Eucharistic Minister, Altar Server, Music Ministry, Environment and Sacristans. Children s Liturgy of the Word is a liturgical experience that opens young children (ages 3-7) to hear and respond to God s Word in ways that enable them to be nurtured and challenged, and to grow in knowledge of Scripture. Children meet as part of the 9:30 a.m. Mass every Sunday, September May. The Mass is the greatest prayer we can offer as Catholic s. It is what unites us as a family of faith. We meet the first Tuesday of every month. The Bake Sale for the SJB Christian Women s Holiday Craft & Gift Fair on November 3 needs your culinary expertise! Help us fill the tables with the best cakes, pies, breads, cookies and you-name-it all donated by the best bakers in Sheboygan County. Items can be delivered to the church hall between 3-6 p.m. on Friday, November 2 and by 8 a.m. on Saturday, November 3. Remember, the Craft Fair starts at 8:30 a.m. this year! Baked items for dietary restrictions should be labeled as such on each item, i.e. nut, dairy, fruit allergies, sugar-free and gluten-free. Questions? Call Mary Biskobing, or Pies are also needed for the Craft Fair luncheon and the new this year dessert & coffee table. Be creative and try that new pie recipe this year! Remember the success of last year s Cranberry Walnut pie? Maybe this year it could be the Oatmeal Pecan pie! All varieties are welcome.
