1 St. John the Baptist Parish Plymouth March 11, 2018 For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him might not perish but might have eternal life. ~ John 3:16 Do we really need a more powerful reminder of the importance of Lent and Easter than that? That verse (from John 3:16) has become very popular in modern culture, to the point that we see it often at athletic events. When the University of Florida played for the national college football championship in 2009, quarterback Tim Tebow did not wear the regular eye black under his eyes. Under his right eye it said John and under his left eye it said 3:16. God sends us messages all the time, if we listen and are attentive. Tebow did not have a remarkable professional career, but he was the quarterback of the Denver Broncos against the Pittsburgh Steelers in the 2012 playoffs. The Broncos won, and in that game Tebow passed for 316 yards; his completed passes averaged 31.6 yards; perhaps the key play in the game came on third down and 16; the TV ratings for the game were 31.6%. That is not the important aspect, however. What is important is that the truth of that statement is so simple; nevertheless, it is difficult for us to completely grasp its significance. The truth is that God loves us, no matter what we are or what our attitude toward God is. The world that God gave His Son to save is our world. We are the children of God. This Lenten season is a time to see that and accept it as truth. Lent 2018 Dramatizations During the past two months more than 40 students in kindergarten through 9th grade, who are members of area Catholic parishes and schools, have been preparing to bring to life the dramatic story of Jesus passion and death in The Living Way of the Cross. Please plan to attend any of these dramatizations to prayerfully travel with Jesus to his death on the cross. 3 St. John the Baptist Parish Plymouth March 11, 2018 Congratulations to our newly confirmed! On Sunday, February 18th Bishop Jeffrey Haines called each individual to witness the gift of our faith by both word and example. Confirmation is considered the Sacrament of Initiation which means that this is just the beginning for these young adults. Please keep them all in your prayers as they embark on the next phase of their faith journey! Remember, then, that you received a spiritual seal, the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of knowledge and reverence, the spirit of holy fear. Keep safe what you received. 4 The Sacrament of Reconciliation During this Lenten time of waiting and preparation, those of us who are baptized often recognize that we have not always lived up to our baptismal commitment. To prepare ourselves to celebrate Christ s coming in our midst, we approach the Sacrament of Reconciliation, asking God s forgiveness, so that we may be restored to full life in Christ. Please take time this Lent to come to one of the communal celebrations, or come individually to celebrate this sacrament. Communal Penance Service with Private Confessions The service includes prayer, homily, examination of conscience and individual confessions. Wednesday, March 14, 6:30pm at St. Peter Claver Parish, Sheboygan Thursday, March 15, 6:30pm at St. Thomas Aquinas, Elkhart Lake Saturday, March 17, 10:00am at Holy Name of Jesus Parish, Sheboygan Monday, March 19, 6:30pm at St. John the Baptist, Plymouth *Private Confessions are also heard every 2nd and 4th Saturday in the Reconciliation room at St. John the Baptist. Why attend the Communal Celebration? From the Rite of Penance: People frequently join together to commit injustice. It is thus only fitting that they should help each other in doing penance so that they who are freed from sin by the grace of Christ may work with all people of good will for justice and peace in the world. A Brief Examination of Conscience Based on the Ten Commandments I am the Lord your God: you shall not have strange Gods before me: Have I treated people, events, or things as more important than God? You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain. Have my words, actively or passively, put down God, the Church, or people? Remember to keep holy the Lord s Day. Do I go to Mass every Sunday (or Saturday Vigil) and on Holy Days of Obligation (Jan. 1; the Ascension; Aug. 15; Nov. 1; Dec. 8; Dec. 25)? Do I avoid, when possible, work that impedes worship to God, joy for the Lord s Day, and proper relaxation of mind and body? Do I look for ways to spend time with family or in service on Sunday? Honor your Father and Mother. Do I show my parents due respect? Do I seek to maintain good communication with my parents where possible? Do I criticize them for lacking skills I think they should have? You shall not kill. Have I harmed another through physical, verbal, or emotional means, including gossip or manipulation of any kind? You shall not commit adultery. Have I respected the physical and Sexual Dignity of others and myself? You shall not steal. Have I taken or wasted time or resources that belonged to another? You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor. Have I gossiped, told lies, or embellished stories at the expense of another? You shall not covet your neighbors spouse. Have I honored my spouse with my full affection and exclusive love? You shall not covet your neighbors goods. Am I content with my own means and needs, or do I compare myself to others unnecessarily? Christ s Two Commandments How well do we love God and others? Do we love as Christ calls us to? In the Gospel of Matthew, Christ gives us Two Commandments: He said to him, You shall love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the greatest and the first commandment. The second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. The whole law and the prophets depend on these two commandments (Mt 22:37-40). Not sure what love is? St. Paul describes it for us in his Letter to the Corinthians. Is this how you love God and others? Love is patient, love is kind. It is not jealous, [love] is not pompous, it is not inflated, it is not rude, it does not seek its own interests, it is not quicktempered, it does not brood over injury, it does not rejoice over wrongdoing but rejoices with the truth. It bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never fails (1 Cor 13:4-8). Copyright 2013, United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, Washington, DC.
