1 St. John the Baptist Parish Palm Sunday April 14, 2019 Dear Parishioners: Wow!!! Palm Sunday already! I don t know if it was the beautiful month of March we had, or all those delicious fish fries, or what, but Lent has really flown by this year. I almost had to pinch myself when the last of our Penance marathons the Archdiocese s 175th Anniversary Sacramental Event, Reconcile and Rejoice: 12 Hours of Reconciliation was entered into the history books last Wednesday. (In our deanery Fond du Lac and Sheboygan Counties we had the added challenge of St. Mary s Springs [the K-12 Catholic School on the northeast side of the City of Fond du Lac], which had scheduled its Sacrament of Reconciliation Day for April 10 when they made up the calendar for the school year, long before the Archdiocese zeroed in on that same day for its event. So, in addition to providing a continuous presence of priests from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Holy Family in Fond du Lac and St. Peter Claver in Sheboygan for the purpose of hearing confessions, several of us spent the better part of the school day at St. Mary s Springs hearing confessions for all the children from 2nd through 12th grades!) So, Holy Week begins with our Palm Sunday liturgies. If Lent has gone by quickly, so, too, will Holy Week. Each day has its special blessings: the Suffering Servant Songs from the Book of the Prophet, Isaiah, as first readings on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday; the Chrism Mass at the Cathedral on Tuesday; Holy Thursday s Mass of the Lord s Supper at both parishes (5:30 at STA, 7:00 at SJB); Friday s Passion of the Lord at both places (12:30 at SJB, 2:30 at STA); the Easter Vigil at SJB on Holy Saturday; and Easter Sunday Masses at 8:00 and 10:00 at both places. They ll be here and gone, before you know it! So, whichever services you plan to attend, please plan, too, to arrive early and take time to read through the readings and familiarize yourself with the rituals associated with the day s service so you can draw greater benefit from what you are about to see and hear. On the business end of things, I have some news about trustees. St. Thomas Aquinas: I had asked Dave Bardon to be a candidate for the position of Trustee-Treasurer, and he agreed. Since there were no other nominees for the position, there is no need for a formal election at STA and Dave is considered winner by acclamation. He will succeed Red Platz as Trustee-Treasurer, effective July 1, St. John the Baptist: there are two nominees to succeed Bill Barbieur in the position of Trustee-Treasurer: Josette Svitter and Jim Wagner. You can read short biographical sketches of Josette and Jim elsewhere in this week s SJB bulletin. Adult SJB parish members may cast their votes in the Gathering Place before and after Masses on the weekend of May 4-5. (Absentee ballots will be available and can be cast in Church on the weekend of April as well as in the SJB Parish Office from Easter Monday through Friday, May 3). The winner will assume office on July 1. May your Holy Week be truly blessed. 2 Living Way of the Cross Dramatizations St. John the Baptist Church Wednesday, April 17 6:30 pm More than 40 students in Kindergarten through 8 th Grade will bring to life the dramatic story of Jesus passion and death in The Living Way of the Cross. Please join us for this powerful dramatization and prayerfully travel with Jesus to his death on the cross. As Christians, we strive to do what Jesus asks of us - to become like Him. St. John the Baptist is proud and excited to announce our Hospitality Ministry, a committee of parishioners helping to engage new and current members into a warm and welcoming community of believers. We are looking for 5-6 volunteers eager to serve within our hospitality ministry who will help organize and host gatherings throughout the year in order to bring our faith-based community together in fellowship. Building and Grounds Update Unfortunately, we often need to make some difficult choices Due to water and ice damage on the east roof of the church we need to remove the two large pine trees near the kitchen doors. The trees prevent the stone block from drying out. That, along with repeated ice and water damage in the gutters is causing roof leaks in the church. This water backs up and leaks over the choir area and directly over our organ. The two trees will be removed and new gutters will be installed.

Mrs. Amy Nelson Faith Formation News Adults, Young and Youth Faith Formation Faith Formation: SJB Faith Formation students continue on their journey of discipleship. Last weekend, some of our 9 th graders were the Greeters at Mass. This past Wednesday, our 10 th graders went to Project Angel Hugs to help prepare items for ill children. First Holy Communion: We have 38 students preparing to receive the Body and Blood of Christ on Sunday, April 28 th at 9:30 Mass. We know that many families and friends will be joining our students for this Blessed Sacrament. * Just a reminder Mass is celebrated at 4:00 pm on Saturday and at 6:00 pm Sunday that weekend. Sheboygan County At Home Mission Week June 17-20, 2019 Youth grades Be a disciple of God and help our neighbors in need. Student and adult volunteers are needed. Pastoral Council Discernment Greetings members of St. John the Baptist Parish I ve been granted a portion of some precious bulletin real estate to speak to Pastoral Council discernment. Nine members comprise our Pastoral Council team each with an intentional stagger to our respective 3-year terms. Three members: Tony Glenboski, Beth Wiese, and I have terms that are set to conclude on 5/31/19. Tony, Beth, and I are all willing to renew our terms on the council (for another 3-year term). Please note, however, that the council is always open to discernment of new members should you feel a calling to be part of this Pastoral Council, please see me after Mass or contact the parish office at Enjoy this season of Lent with your families. Schneider SJB Pastoral Council Chair School Board Committee Update Dear Parishioners, The School Board is in the process of reviewing and updating the school mission and vision statements. The mission statement needs to explain what it is that we do as a school that provides a quality faith based education. Our vision statement provides insight on what school should look like to meet the needs of our students to prepare them for their futures. The biannual Auction occurred on April 6 th and was a fun-filled evening of entertainment, tasty food, and fellowship. Congratulations to the auction committee co-chairs, Mary Mueller and Melissa Meyer, for organizing another very successful auction. Volunteers are needed to replace school board members who are completing their 3 year terms of service. The requirements are: to be at least 18 years of age and to be a parish member. You do not need to have a child attending the school. Nor do you have to be an educator to be on the school board. 4 St. John the Baptist Parish Trustee Election After Masses / May 4 and 5, 2019 In The Gathering Place All parish members 18 years or older are eligible to vote. Absentee ballots are available in the back of church beginning April 27. Josette Svitter Why do you want to be a parish Trustee? I feel since I already am quite active in our faith community, I can ease into this position with the knowledge to represent different points of view during meetings and discussions. I plan to be available as a good listener and present your views where appropriate. I believe this is a vibrant faith community coming together to worship, support each other in all our needs and extend our services into the community. With the guidance of the Holy Spirit, together we can continue to grow in our faith journey. Briefly state the role you feel a Trustee should play in our Josette and Michael Svitter faith community. First and foremost the trustee is a leader and a spokesperson for our faith community. As a leader, it is the trustee's role to listen and to be informed about the parish's needs with emphasis on the business aspects of the organization but not neglecting the spiritual needs as well. The trustee s job is to understand and to offer advice, leading to thoughtful decisions. Working as a team through the guidance of the Holy Spirit, will lead this parish forward. List any parish activities or committees you have been involved with - Current: Christian Women - President, St Vincent de Paul Conference - Secretary, Prayer Shawl Gathering, (Lead) Eucharistic Minister Prayer and Worship. They should safeguard the parish resources so SJB leaders and members can accomplish our stated parish mission.
