1 St. John the Baptist Parish Plymouth April 29, 2018 Dear Parishioners: What a difference a week makes, huh? I m walking outside today (Monday) without a jacket. Robins are chirping again; people are strolling; drivers have their windows rolled down. In addition to the signs of Nature that Spring is really here, we also have those other annual Church-related events that serve as signatures of Spring: First Communion celebrations, the Feast of Pentecost, May crowning ceremonies. Speaking of May crownings, I was pacing the hallway earlier today, wondering what topic I might address in this week s bulletin article. I found myself in the office of SJB s recently designated Communication Coordinator, Katie Kleiber. Figuring this was her bailiwick, I asked her, What should I write about? Quick as a flash, she said: May Crowning. Me: What s to write about? Katie: That it will happen with the First Communicants after Mass on Tuesday, May 1st. Me: Well, that s all of one line.... Then the light flashed, the sirens went off! The new Marian feast: Mary, Mother of the Church. In a decree released on March 3rd, Pope Francis directed that Latin-rite Catholics around the world will henceforth mark the memorial of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of the Church each year on the Monday after Pentecost. Honoring her in this way highlights for believers that Mary was present with the disciples on Pentecost, praying with them as the Holy Spirit descended upon them. [Acts of the Apostles 1:13-14; 2:1-4] In one sense, Mary has been honored as a mother-figure for the Church the people of God since the day of her Son s crucifixion, when, according to scripture [John 19:27-28] from the cross Jesus said to his mother, Woman, behold, your son. Then he said to the disciple, Behold, your mother. But this identity didn t gain a formal articulation until November 21, 1964, when Blessed Pope Paul VI invoked the terminology in his allocution (address) at the Closing of the Third Session of the Second Vatican Council and promulgating Lumen Gentium, the Council s Dogmatic Constitution on the Church. (Lumen Gentium has a well-developed section on the role of Mary in salvation history and her place in the life of the Church [Chapter 8, Our Lady ], but it never explicitly invokes the title of Mary, Mother of the Church. ) Pope Paul confirmed the designation of Mary as Mother of the Church four years later, when he issued the Apostolic Letter, Credo of the People of God: Solemn Profession of Faith on June 30, (There is some rather intriguing speculation about why he chose to proclaim this Credo [translation: I believe ] when and how he did. If you re interested, just google Credo of the People of God. ) So, the Church has another Marian Feast Day. It isn t a new Holyday of Obligation. This Feast won t have a fixed date in the Church s liturgical calendar, but since it will always be celebrated on the Monday after Pentecost, it will never trump a Sunday celebration (like is happening this year on June 24th, when the universal Church will celebrate the Solemnity of the Nativity of Saint. John the Baptist instead of the twelfth Sunday of Ordinary Time). But there will eventually be special Mass prayers for this memorial to help us appreciate even more deeply the importance of the Blessed Virgin in the faith life of the Church. Father Phil Fr. Phil s Coffee Klatch All are welcome to this informal, open discussion with Father Phil Wednesdays, May 2 and May 23 St. Thomas Aquinas Chapel 10:00-11:00am Pray a Rosary for LIFE Saturday, May 5 at 3:30pm and Sunday, May 6 at 9:00am in Church The Rosary for Life is prayed the first Saturday and Sunday of each month in church before Mass. If you are interested in occasionally volunteering to lead the rosary, please contact Cindy at for more information. St. John captures the essence of what kind of love is expected from us toward our neighbor and those in need as he opens our Second Reading with Let us love not in word or speech but in deed and truth. Jesus made that point several times in His own teachings. It follows the old adage that Actions speak louder than words. We have pointed out numerous times that being a good steward requires action. It may be easy for us come to an understanding of what it means to love one another; and additionally, we may speak of doing it; but the true measure is what we do, how we live our lives. The best examples of stewardship of that we may be aware in our parishes and community involve what we see and experience in others. That is the most effective way to be taught and it is the best way to teach others. Do it and live it. That is John s point is it not? He continues his instructions in the Second Reading by saying, We should believe in the name of his Son Jesus Christ, and love one another as He commanded us. The Norwegian playwright and poet Henrik Ibsen, who had a great appreciation for the written word, once stated, A thousand words will not leave so deep an impression as one deed. The point of Jesus Parable of the Two Sons (Mt 21) in which one son says he will do his father s will but does not while the other says he will not obey, but repents and does what his father asked, is quite clear that deeds mean more than intentions.
