1 St. John the Baptist Parish 4th Sunday of Ordinary Time February 3, 2019 Dear Parishioners of St. John the Baptist: As many of you have probably noticed, we are moving ahead with the re-purposing of our former chapel. Pews have been removed and the glass wall separating the chapel from the gathering space is coming down soon. A couple of plumbing modifications were scheduled to have been made last week, and carpet tiles are on order. For the time being, CLOW (Children s Liturgy of the Word) will continue to be conducted in the chapel during Mass on Sunday morning, and the Reconciliation Room will remain where it is. BUT the end plan is (1) to make the present Ushers Room the priests/servers sacristy and Reconciliation Room, (2) transform the present Reconciliation Room into the new Ushers Room; and (3) make the present Sacristy an enhanced working area. All of this will be accomplished with the $5,000 originally included in the current budget as a contingency fund for the re-purposing project as augmented by an amazingly generous cash contribution given anonymously to the parish for this purpose. We have also accepted the offers of volunteer labor of some pretty talented parishioners for cabinet-building and other carpentry work, along with gratis glass work to be provided by Plymouth Glass. We are trying to orchestrate the re-purposing re-modeling in a manner that will allow it to be accomplished efficiently while being minimally disruptive of weekday and especially weekend Masses. Time will tell how successful we are. In any case, at this point our hope is to complete what we intend to do by Easter (April 21st). In his 1873 novel, Jules Verne set his main character, Phileas Fogg, out on an attempt to be the first person go around the world in 80 days. Let s see if we can accomplish our own marvelous little feat in a similar amount of time. Lake Drive, Milwaukee or give online Update from Karene Boos (ZeruZeru Inc), regarding the treatment of people with albinism in Tanzania The BBC news out of Tanzania reported earlier just this week that 6 children with albinism were killed in southwest Tanzania (about 1000 miles from the center in Lamadi) Ironically, when I was in Tanzania, I learned from Sister that she had been on the news, which aired through Tanzania, and she was getting inquiries from all over the country for her to take their children with albinism or to open more centers throughout Tanzania. The Regional Police Commissioner also visited the center and was so impressed with the center. He thanked us for the work, stating that it helps the police to have these safe centers because it decreases the police burden to try to protect individuals with albinism who live in remote and scattered areas. Despite the success we have had, the issue is far from over. Thank you all again for your support of the work.

2 Reflection on Today s Second Reading (1 Corinthians 12:31-13:13) How do I know if the Time, Talent and Treasure I offer God in grateful return is enough? What is the measure? St. Paul tells us in the Second Reading today the measure is the love that we put into each of these aspects of our lives. If I have all faith so as to move mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing. If I give away everything I own and hand my body over so that I may boast but do not have love, I gain nothing. God is not after a particular number. What He wants us to give over to Him is our very selves. Real love is not a sentiment. Real love is manifested in living a virtuous life. We read later in St. Paul s letter that real love takes strength: it is patient, kind, humble, other-centered, truth-seeking and long-suffering. Love is the heroic giving of oneself even when it is uncomfortable; especially then. Love looks like Jesus. It lives like Jesus. Sometimes, living like Jesus is difficult. We see this in the Gospel Reading today where we find Jesus in action, preaching in the synagogue in His hometown. He speaks truth to the people He loves, the ones He grew up with and shared His early days with. How do they respond? They are filled with fury and run Him out of town, intent on throwing Him from a cliff! Yet Jesus is undeterred. He passes right through them and presses forward with the mission His Father has entrusted to Him. Walking with Purpose Beholding His Glory Nine-Week Bible Study for Women *Registration Closes February 10. Beholding His Glory bible study shows us how all Scripture points us to our Redeemer, Jesus Christ. We ll learn to recognize and appreciate God s plan for our own lives, His awe-inspiring majesty, and His desire for personal intimacy with each one of us. Weekly morning and evening sessions are available beginning Tuesday, March 5 (9:00 10:30 a.m. at SJB), Wednesday, March 6 (9:15 10:45 am at STA) or Thursday, March 7 (6:00 7:30 p.m. at SJB) Childcare is available. Living Way of the Cross Students in grades 3-8 from St. John the Baptist, St. Thomas Aquinas and other area Catholic parishes and schools are invited to bring to life the story of Jesus passion and death in The Living Way of the Cross during the up coming Lenten season. After-school rehearsals, two nights a week based on student schedules, will begin at the end of February at St. John the Baptist. No previous acting experience is needed. Please place them in the baskets at the entrances. We will use the ashes from these palms for the Distribution of Ashes on Ash Wednesday. St. John the Baptist and the Plymouth Welcome Table The Welcome Table is a fellowship dinner held every Tuesday evening at Redeemer Lutheran Church in Plymouth. Area churches and organizations provide, prepare and serve the meals. The fellowship hall opens at 5:00 pm and the meal is served at 5:30 pm. This is a great opportunity to visit with others and let someone else do the cooking! Please consider inviting a friend, neighbor or family member to this weekly event. Get Involved: St. John the Baptist Parish volunteers sponsor the meal six times each year. There are many areas for volunteering; from preparing food to serving beverages. 3 St. John the Baptist Parish /School Inclement Weather Policy Your physical safety is very important to us, therefore, we have adopted an inclement weather policy. No event, including Mass, requires your attendance if you feel that weather conditions are dangerous. It is your right and responsibility to determine whether it is safe and/or wise to travel when road conditions may be hazardous. School St. John the Baptist follows the Plymouth Joint School District regarding closings and delays (late starts). You can visit the or the parish/school website for notifications. Daily Mass If Plymouth schools are closed or have a delayed openings, the weekday morning Mass is cancelled. Weekday Meetings/Events/Faith Formation If Plymouth schools are delayed, morning activities are cancelled. If Plymouth schools are closed due to inclement weather, there will be no parish activities or religious education. If Plymouth schools close early or cancel evening activities, Faith Formation and ALL evening activities are cancelled. Parish Office If Plymouth schools have a delayed opening, the parish office will open at 10:00 am. If school is closed the parish office may close, or open at 10:00 a.m. depending on weather advisories and conditions. Even if the parish office is open, please call ahead if you have an appointment with one of our staff. Although the office may be open, individual staff members may not be able to come into the office. They will make every effort to notify anyone affected, but it is still best to call and check. Weekend Meetings and Events: Cancellations and delays for weekend meetings and events will be handled on a case by case basis. If an event is scheduled to begin at 8:30 am, we would hope to make a decision by 7:00 am. If an event is scheduled for the evening, we would anticipate a decision will be made by 3:00 pm. Sometimes, that is not possible and we ask you to check the parish website or call the parish office (920) Weekend Mass Mass will not ordinarily be cancelled due to weather conditions. However, please do not travel if you feel unsafe or the roads near you are not passable. Individuals are dispensed from the obligation to attend Mass if they cannot attend due to bad weather, even if Mass is not cancelled. St. John the Baptist adheres closely to the inclement weather policy of the Plymouth Joint School District, however there may be occasions when a decision to close the facility is made independently of the district. Check the parish website, call the office or check local broadcasters* for closing information. 4 School News St. John the Baptist Catholic School - 3K-Grade 8 A Message from the Principal Our commitment at St. John the Baptist School is to provide a safe and intellectually challenging environment that will empower students to become innovative thinkers, creative problem solvers and inspired learners prepared to thrive in the twenty-first century. As the Principal, it is such a joy to see this is action. During our recent open house, I was proud of the second grade students as they shared facts about a variety of Saints and equally proud of the middle school students for doing history presentations as visitors came through the building. Our drama elective students presented skits in the Performing Arts Center that they created based on Dr. Seuss and did a fantastic job as well. Second semester has begun! I look forward to seeing many more exciting learning opportunities that will continue to challenge our students intellectually. In preparation for the upcoming school year budget, the Board reviewed and approved the school tuition increase as proposed by the Finance Council.
