They are nice sounding words, but how does one actually find the peace that Jesus is promising? Well to begin, one thing is absolutely necessary. We must have the same perspective on life that Jesus did. Jesus always put things in the bigger picture. If we are able to maintain an eternal perspective on our cares and concerns much of our worry and anxiety would be relieved. Knowing that every minute of the day we are in the loving embrace of God our Father who will never let us go will make the uncertainties of life less frightening and burdensome. God cares for us. Reading the Scriptures can deepen our knowledge of God s abiding care for us. Active participation in the Faith Community of the Church will give us a sense of His presence through our interaction with others. Finally, by our reception of the Eucharist, we will possess the Food of eternal life. 1

FIFTH SUNDAY OF EASTER MAY 14, 2017 CELEBRATING THE SAINTS Saint Agnes of Assisi, Virgin (1197-1253) Saint Agnes of Assisi was the younger sister of Saint Clare of Assisi. Her birth name was probably Caterina. She was given the name Agnes by Saint Francis. On March 18, 1212, Agnes eldest sister Clare, inspired by the example of St. Francis of Assisi, left their father s home in secret to become a follower of the saint. Sixteen days later, Agnes, all of fifteen, ran off to the Benedictine Monastery of St. Angelo where St. Francis had brought her sister, resolved to share Clare s life of poverty and penance. Angry at having lost two of his daughters, their father sent his brother Monaldo, and several relations and armed followers to the monastery to force Agnes, if persuasion failed, to return home. Monaldo drew his sword to strike his niece, but his arm allegedly dropped to his side, withered and useless. The others dragged Agnes out of the monastery by her hair, striking her and kicking her repeatedly. Agnes body reportedly became so heavy that her assailants dropped her in a field nearby. Agnes relatives, realizing that something divine protected her, allowed the sisters to remain together. St. Francis himself cut her hair and gave her the religious habit, in recognition of Agnes dedication. Francis later established a cloister for Clare and Agnes at the rural chapel of San Damiano, where they were soon joined by other noble women of the city, and the Order of the Poor Ladies, later known as the Poor Clares, began with Clare as its abbess. In 1221, the Abbess Clare chose her sister to lead a community of Benedictine nuns in the village of Monticelli who wished to embrace the way of life of the Poor Ladies. She later went on to establish other communities of the Order, including those of Mantua, Venice, and Padua. Agnes was said to be very virtuous, and as abbess she ruled with a benevolent kindness, knowing how to make the practice of virtue appealing to her Sisters. Agnes nursed her sister Clare during the latter s final illness, and shortly thereafter died herself on November 16, 1253. Her remains were interred with those of her sister at the Basilica of St. Clare at Assisi. Saint Agnes of Assisi s feast day is November 16 th. We are very pleased to announce that Bishop Daniel Thomas, Apostolic Administrator for the Diocese of Cleveland, has assigned Rev. Mr. Gerard Blanda Deacon for St. Anthony of Padua Parish. Mr. Blanda was ordained to the Order of Deacon, Saturday May 6, 2017, at St. John the Evangelist Cathedral in Cleveland. His assignment takes effect immediately. RELIGIOUS ORDER OF THE WEEK Order: The Order of Friars Servants of Mary (OSM) aka The Servites Origin: Seven prosperous men came together in the city of Florence, Italy. These men met regularly in honor of Mary, the Mother of God. Eventually, the seven left their comfortable homes and went to live together in a run-down building outside the city walls. Soon, others became attracted to the way of life and prayer. Charism: Moved by the Spirit, we commit ourselves to witness the gospel and be at the service of God and all people, drawing inspiration from Mary, Mother and Servant of the Lord (Servite Constitutions, art. #1). OHIO OPPORTUNITY SCHOLARSHIP SENATE BILL 85 INFORMATION MEETING PARMA HEIGHTS You are invited to attend an informational meeting at 9:30 A.M. on Friday, May 19 at Holy Name High School, 6000 Queens Highway, Parma Heights, to learn more about the Ohio Opportunity Scholarship (Senate Bill 85). If passed, the Ohio Opportunity Scholarship (Senate Bill 55) would give middle- and low-income families the opportunity to choose a private school for their children s education. Scholarships would be worth up to $5,000 for elementary and $7,500 for high school tuition. Families with a household income at or below 400% of the poverty level would be eligible. For example a family of four earning $98,400 would qualify. Ohio Senator Matt Huffman, sponsor of the bill, will be at the meeting to talk about how this bill would increase access to quality education in Ohio. School families, parishioners, teachers, school advisory councils and parish finance councils should all attend to learn more about this chance for a Catholic education for the children in our community. To register for the meeting visit: https://cdcohiooppscholarshipsb85.eventbrite.com. Contact Christopher Knight, secretary for catechetical formation and superintendent of education for the Catholic Diocese of Cleveland, for more information, ckknight@dioceseofcleveland.org or call 216-696-6525 Ext. 1172. To date $1,223.68 has been contributed from the parish. Fr. Dale HEY CATHOLIC! DID YOU KNOW Did you know that deacons also wear a garment called a stole. Whereas the stole for the priest goes around the neck, the stole for the deacons go from his left shoulder to his right hip. It reminds the deacon to be a man who serves the Church as a minister of the Word, of the Altar, and of Charity. SEMINARIAN OF THE WEEK Every week, our parish will promote vocations by encouraging the community to pray for our diocesan seminarians. Please pray for James Hawkins. 4
