St. John the Baptist Parish Plymouth November 12, 2017 Dear Parishioners of St. John the Baptist: At the Town Hall meeting on October 29th, we reported that we ve budgeted a deficit of about $160,000 (excluding investment income) for this fiscal year. We attributed the lion s share of the deficit to salaries in our school s teachers. As a matter of fact, we budgeted a school salary/benefits total that is $82,000 greater than what was budgeted for the previous year. Why? Two years ago, a comparison of our teachers salaries with those of their peers in the Plymouth Public School District revealed that we were paying SJB teachers a little over half of what their public school colleagues were making. An effort was made to redress this imbalance at that time. But earlier this year, we conducted another analysis of SJB teachers salary scale, this time looking at the salary scales of Christ Child Academy (Sheboygan), St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic School (Sheboygan) and the Plymouth Public School District again. We looked at what teachers were being paid, given their years of service and where they stood in terms of professional development. What we found was that SJB teachers salaries were lower than comparable teachers salaries at CCA and even more so at Seton. But the big shocker was the comparison to Plymouth Public School teachers, where our teachers still registered at a mere 60% parity with their public school counterparts. The point was made at the Town Hall meeting that teachers are becoming a scarce commodity, and some are being lured away from parochial schools by the higher salaries offered in the public school sector; the better teachers are attracting even bigger dollars. But it isn t just a matter of remaining competitive in a highly competitive market. It is a matter of justice: we owe our teachers a just family-supporting wage. Over the years, archdiocesan school officials have suggested that the goal for any given school should be to maintain teacher salaries at an 80% parity level with the local public school district. To jump from 60% to 80% parity in a single year would have been a very difficult step to take; while we could draw off of savings to do it for one year, it would not be sustainable over the long haul without a significant growth in regular income. So, the SJB Finance Council has decided to move to 71% parity this year, conduct an enhanced giving campaign next Spring, and try to edge up to the 80% level over the following two or three years. Meanwhile, we expect the other new initiative which was announced at the Town Hall meeting the search for a person to serve as our Director of Mission Advancement to be of significant benefit in this area, too, as that person works to keep you fully informed about what steps we re taking while promoting the overall wellbeing of both our parish and our school for many years to come.
