The reason He gives us for not being fearful is our inestimable value. The insignificance of a sparrow is used by Jesus to underline just how valuable we are to our heavenly Father. It is as if the Father says to each of us, You are very special to me. Don t worry. I will take care of you. Aren t these the same words we often say to our own children and loved ones? Yet how often are we afraid? We are always on the lookout for the disapproval of others, thinking that if we step out of line a little, someone will be there to correct or to criticize us. Can t we see how this kind of fear often time keeps us from really loving? We are prisoners to the approval or disapproval of others. Our freedom disappears or diminishes. Instead of allowing the God of love to be our master, we choose instead to become the slaves of the thoughts and opinions of others. Would you like it if your own children only obeyed you for fear of being hit? Isn t that a terrible way to raise children? Of course it is. God our Father doesn t want to raise His children that way either. He wants us to love freely because when we do, we resemble Him best.

TWELFTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME JUNE 25, 2017 CELEBRATING THE SAINTS Saints Joachim and Anne (1 st Century) The canonical Gospels do not give the names of Mary s parents. Tradition draws on the 2 nd Century apocryphal Gospel of James for our information about Joachim and Anne. It is said that Joachim was a rich man of Jerusalem. When he brought his livestock for sacrifice in the Temple of Jerusalem, he was rebuffed because he had produced no sons or daughters. In the face of this reproach, the elderly Joachim sought the solitude of the desert for forty days. At home, Anne likewise entered into a time of prayer. Anne s longing was at last fulfilled when an angel came to her as she sat under a laurel tree and told her that she would conceive a child. She hastened to the city gate, and there, coming down from the hills, surrounded by his flocks, was Joachim. He too, had received a message of hope. At once Anne ran and hung upon his neck. She declared with great joy, Now I know that the Lord God has blessed me exceedingly; for, behold the widow is no longer a widow, and I, the childless, shall conceive! The scene at the Jerusalem gate figures often in the iconography of the couple. Anne and Joachim are both invoked by those seeking to conceive a child. They are patrons of grandparents, witnesses to the gift of life that brings forth Mary, the Mother of the Savior. Anne is often depicted as the generous teacher of her daughter, Mary. The Feast of Saints Joachim and Anne is celebrated on July 26 th. COME TO JESUS If you know someone who is thinking about becoming Catholic, invite them to an information night about the RCIA process on Monday June 26, 2017 at 7:00 PM in the Hospitality Room. St. Paul was beheaded by the sword. 50+ SOCIAL CLUB St. Anthony's 50+ Social Club will have their annual Picnic/Pot-Luck on July 7th, 2017 starting at Noon in the Hospitality Room of the church. TWELFTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME JUNE 25, 2017 YOU RE WORTH IT! Have you ever felt like everyone around you had it all together? Loving marriage, great kids, no health issues, no troubles. When they don't talk about their difficulties you assume they have none. So you keep quiet about your own struggles, afraid you won t be accepted if anyone knew what was really going on with you. If this sounds familiar, you re not alone. The Women s Faith Ministry invites all women to attend a book study, You re Worth It! The book reveals ways to help change how you feel about yourself by discovering how Jesus feels about you. If you would like the support and encouragement of other women in your journey of faith, then consider joining us each Wednesday beginning August 2 through September 20 from 7 to 8 p.m. in the Hospitality Room at St. Anthony. Although it is not mandatory to attend all sessions, it benefits you to do so. If interested, your RSVP is needed by calling the parish rectory at (440) 842-2666 or by email at wfmstanthony@gmail.com no later than July 24 for ordering books and materials. There is no cost to attend. RELIGIOUS ORDER OF THE WEEK Order: The Society of Divine Vocations (SDV) aka The Vocationist Fathers Summary: The Society of Divine Vocations is a clerical religious community of Pontifical Right whose members intend to live in the footsteps of Jesus. Their first duty is "to be with Him through poverty, chastity, and obedience. Founders: Blessed Father Justin M. Russolillo, S.D.V. Charism: The Vocationists strive to foster, search, encourage and guide vocations to religious life and to the priesthood. Website: http://www.vocationist.org/ WEEKLY MASS REMINDER Listen with excitement for the holy words of the Lord: TAKE THIS, ALL OF YOU, AND EAT OF IT, FOR THIS IS MY BODY, WHICH WILL BE GIVEN UP FOR YOU and TAKE THIS, ALL OF YOU, AND DRINK FROM IT, FOR THIS IS THE CHALICE OF MY BLOOD, THE BLOOD OF THE NEW AND ETERNAL COVENANT, WHICH WILL BE POURED OUT FOR YOU AND FOR MANY FOR THE FORGIVENESS OF SINS. DO THIS IN MEMORY OF ME. As Catholics, we cherish these words. CATHOLIC GLOSSARY Ordinary Time: A period of time during the liturgical year. Ordinary does not mean dull or boring, but that we are ordering our life around Jesus. As we walk through the life of Christ, this is the time of conversion, of growth, and of maturation in Jesus Christ. 4

ST. ANTHONY OF PADUA CHURCH APOSTLESHIP OF PRAYER INTENTION FOR JULY Lapsed Christians: That our brothers and sisters who have strayed from the faith, through our prayer and witness to the Gospel may rediscover the merciful closeness of the Lord and beauty of the Christian life. I feel so helpless. It seems so hopeless. What can I do to get my adult children back to church? These words can be heard in almost every family. It s something that Pope Francis has heard and this month he asks us to do something in response. First, he asks us to pray for our brothers and sisters. Those who have left the faith are still children of the Father who created them. Through baptism they are members of the Body of Christ. If we are concerned for them, how much more is Jesus, who shed His Precious Blood for them? When we pray, we share our concern with the Lord who shares His concern with us. Sharing in this way, we are drawn closer to Jesus. Then we act. Not nagging, but gently loving. Members of the Body of Christ, we make the merciful love of Jesus tangible to others. The only sermon the may hear and listen to is the one we preach with our loving actions. Through us, those who are wandering can rediscover the merciful closeness of the Lord and the beauty of the Christian life. Our continued prayer brings grace into their lives and it changes us so that our witness is more consistent. Pope Francis said: Let us all remember this: one cannot proclaim the Gospel of Jesus without the tangible witness of one s life. Those who listen to us and observe us must be able to see in our actions what they hear from our lips, and so give glory to God! I am thinking now of some advice that St. Francis of Assisi gave his brothers: Preaching with your life, with your witness. Inconsistency on the part of pastors and faithful between what they say and what they do, between word and manner of life, is undermining the Church s credibility. It is not hopeless and we are not helpless. That is the motto of a group of people who pray for loved ones who have wande3red away from the Church. They share a deep concern for the lost sheep. They re called the Marian Mantle Group and they can be found online at www.marianmantle.com. AN AMAZING FAMILY DAY Are you looking for an opportunity for your family to grow in faith this summer for FREE? PARMA, OHIO CATHOLIC HOMESCHOOL CONFERENCE The IHM Cleveland Homeschool Conference will be held at St. Adalbert Parish, Keller Center, 66 Adalbert Street, in Berea, on Friday, July 21 st (12:00 pm 6:00 p.m.) and on Saturday, July 22 nd (9:30 a.m. 12 Noon). This is the perfect event for those who are curious and want to discover more about Catholic homeschooling. Admission is free and pre-registration is not required. For more information, please visit www.ihmconference.org or email: info@ihmconference.org. POPE FRANCIS REQUESTS: TAKE THE YOUTH SURVEY! The Catholic bishops of the world are planning to meet in October 2018 for the 15th Ordinary General Assembly of the Synod of Bishops. The theme of this gathering is Youth, Faith and Vocational Discernment. In preparation for this major synod on youth, Pope Francis wants to gather input from the Catholic faithful. Consequently, the Diocese of Cleveland has made available a survey questionnaire to gather information on the current state of the young in our diocese that will be included as part of the pre-synod discernment document. The survey can be found on the diocesan home page, www.dioceseofcleveland.org. All are invited and encouraged to participate by taking this short survey. The bishops of the United States pray that the results of this survey will help them more fully understand the experience of young people in our Church and in our country -- their hopes, dreams, fears and struggles -- so that the synod may bear fruit in offering more insight and direction to our ministry with young people. MYSTAGOGICAL MOMENTS Mystagogy (mist-a-go-gee) is prayerful reflection on the presence of God in the midst of events. This section will offer a question to begin your conversation with God. Question: How did the Holy Spirit speak to you in the Gospel? If you did not hear anything, read it again and listen. CHRISTIAN SPIRITUALITY CORNER "Better to pray one psalm with devotion and compunction than a hundred with distraction. St. Romuald 5
