St. John the Baptist Parish Plymouth December 3, 2017 Dear Parishioners: Happy New Year! With the First Sunday of Advent, we are entering into the new Church Year. It s the B Year in our three-year cycle, and in the B Year our focus is on the Gospel of Mark, the shortest but in some ways the most intense of the four gospels. It s so short, in fact, that about midway through the thirty-four Sundays of Ordinary Time, we are treated to a fivesunday excursus on the Bread of Life Discourse from the sixth chapter of the Gospel of John. As for Advent this year, I m not telling you anything that a cursory glance at the calendar hasn t already revealed to you: Advent is as short as it can possibly be, with the Fourth Sunday of Advent falling on Christmas Eve. For the Fourth Sunday of Advent, we will have our regular Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning Masses at St. John the Baptist and at St. Thomas Aquinas. For Christmas Eve (Sunday afternoon), we will have Masses at 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. at both parishes. (I will be at St. Thomas Aquinas; Fr. Van Beek will be at St. John the Baptist.) On Christmas Day, we will have an 8:00 a.m. Mass at St. Thomas Aquinas and a 9:30 a.m. Mass at St. John the Baptist. And, to head off at the pass the question that is sure to be asked as people scurry around franticly trying to complete the shopping/wrapping/baking/cleaning chores that go with the season: NO, attending the 4:00 or 6:00 p.m. Mass on Christmas Eve does NOT satisfy the obligation to attend Mass on the Fourth Sunday of Advent. (Hey! Call me Grinch if you like, but that s straight from the Chancery. Sorry.) Something pretty exciting will be happening this year. On the very last Wednesday of the Church Year November 28, 2018 the Archdiocese of Milwaukee will celebrate the 175th anniversary of its creation. There will be several special events to mark the occasion; my understanding is that these will be spread throughout the year, so we can expect to be hearing about them early and often. Which is not to suggest that something pretty exciting hasn t been happening around these parts in the here and now: this is the first time ever that I ve gone into the month of December still wearing a short-sleeved clerical shirt! La Niña, humbug! First Sunday of Advent December 3, 2017 We await His coming in joyful anticipation! SJB School Advent Prayer Services Please join us! This year our St. John the Baptist school students will come together for Advent prayer services on December 8, 15 and 21 in our Performing Art Center at 2 p.m. All are welcome to attend! Each week we will focus on O Antiphons, which are the various titles for Jesus, such as Lord of Might. A different verse of O Come, O Come Emmanuel will be sung at the start of each prayer service. Technology will be integrated into each lesson of Advent. Our 7th grade students have created slide shows for each week and our 8th grade students have created video clips explaining the different names for Jesus. May we all enjoy the wonder and excitement of this Advent season and all the promises it will bring!
