St. John the Baptist Parish Plymouth December 3, 2017 Dear Parishioners: Happy New Year! With the First Sunday of Advent, we are entering into the new Church Year. It s the B Year in our three-year cycle, and in the B Year our focus is on the Gospel of Mark, the shortest but in some ways the most intense of the four gospels. It s so short, in fact, that about midway through the thirty-four Sundays of Ordinary Time, we are treated to a fivesunday excursus on the Bread of Life Discourse from the sixth chapter of the Gospel of John. As for Advent this year, I m not telling you anything that a cursory glance at the calendar hasn t already revealed to you: Advent is as short as it can possibly be, with the Fourth Sunday of Advent falling on Christmas Eve. For the Fourth Sunday of Advent, we will have our regular Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning Masses at St. John the Baptist and at St. Thomas Aquinas. For Christmas Eve (Sunday afternoon), we will have Masses at 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. at both parishes. (I will be at St. Thomas Aquinas; Fr. Van Beek will be at St. John the Baptist.) On Christmas Day, we will have an 8:00 a.m. Mass at St. Thomas Aquinas and a 9:30 a.m. Mass at St. John the Baptist. And, to head off at the pass the question that is sure to be asked as people scurry around franticly trying to complete the shopping/wrapping/baking/cleaning chores that go with the season: NO, attending the 4:00 or 6:00 p.m. Mass on Christmas Eve does NOT satisfy the obligation to attend Mass on the Fourth Sunday of Advent. (Hey! Call me Grinch if you like, but that s straight from the Chancery. Sorry.) Something pretty exciting will be happening this year. On the very last Wednesday of the Church Year November 28, 2018 the Archdiocese of Milwaukee will celebrate the 175th anniversary of its creation. There will be several special events to mark the occasion; my understanding is that these will be spread throughout the year, so we can expect to be hearing about them early and often. Which is not to suggest that something pretty exciting hasn t been happening around these parts in the here and now: this is the first time ever that I ve gone into the month of December still wearing a short-sleeved clerical shirt! La Niña, humbug! Compassionate Hearts has some volunteers who have been praying the rosary every Tuesday morning at 9:00am at the Waterford. They are looking for Christmas CD s with classical style music for the residents and also for music from the 30 s, 40 s, and 50 s era for the post holidays. If you have CD s you are no longer listening to, this would be the perfect place to donate them. There will be a box in the church vestibule, near the bulletin board. Thank You! *Due to privacy laws, St John the Baptist parish is not notified of parishioners who are hospitalized, homebound, or have entered a health care facility. To request a visit from a compassionate hearts volunteer, call the parish office at 892-4006.

First Sunday of Advent December 3, 2017 We await His coming in joyful anticipation! SJB School Advent Prayer Services Please join us! This year our St. John the Baptist school students will come together for Advent prayer services on December 8, 15 and 21 in our Performing Art Center at 2 p.m. All are welcome to attend! Each week we will focus on O Antiphons, which are the various titles for Jesus, such as Lord of Might. A different verse of O Come, O Come Emmanuel will be sung at the start of each prayer service. Technology will be integrated into each lesson of Advent. Our 7th grade students have created slide shows for each week and our 8th grade students have created video clips explaining the different names for Jesus. May we all enjoy the wonder and excitement of this Advent season and all the promises it will bring! Mrs. Amy Nelson Christmas is most truly Christmas when we celebrate it by giving the light of love to those who need it most. St. John the Baptist Parish Christmas Giving Tree Project Please place unwrapped items around the Christmas Giving Tree in the church gathering space. The SVdP Wish List Program provides household Christmas presents to families in our area. The Christmas Giving Tree in the back of church is decorated with tags. Each tag will include a family s wish. If you would like to participate in this program, please take a tag from one of the trees, purchase the gift item and place the unwrapped gifts with tags beneath the giving tree by Sunday, December 17th. The SVdP Holiday Cheer (Toy) Program offers parents the opportunity to shop for Christmas gifts for their children. Donate new, unwrapped items such as: family games, cars/trucks, Lego sets, arts & crafts and dolls by Thursday, December 7th. We are also collecting hats, mittens and scarves Donations are distributed by St. Vincent de Paul, to families within our parish as well as other families in our area. Advent Bible Study with Fr. Phil Mondays, December 4 and December 11 8:45-9:45am in the Meeting Room (across from the Church Hall) Join Fr. People could bring up any topic to discuss: a current event, something going on in the parish, Church politics, papal announcements, questions about Church history, etc. SJB will be sponsoring the Welcome Table on Tuesday, December 12, 2017. Salads and desserts are needed for the meal that we will be providing. Volunteers are also needed to assist with serving the meal and clean up. Please call or contact either Kathy Halloran at 980-8991, (halloranka@gmail.com) or Monica Kleinhans at 893-0450 (mrkleinhans12@gmail.com) if you are able to provide food or volunteer for this meal. Please contact Monica or Kathy if you need transportation when SJB hosts the Welcome Table. Wheelchair accessible.
