SUNDAY THOUGHT Matthew 13:1-23 Robin Marcus Robert Stackhouse Contribution for Weekend July 8/9, 2017 Total Offering : $13,563.68 Sunday Collection: $10,701.08 Faith Direct: $2,862.60 Poor Box: $94.00 This weekend Jesus tells us the parable of the Sower and the Seed. The seeds that are scattered on the ground are, for Jesus, symbolic of the words that He and others speak to us. Our words spoken to each other can have great power. They can heal and they can hurt. They can set others free or they can continue to hold them prisoner. If this is so with our words, how much more powerful will God s Word be? Each of us chooses what kind of response we will be making to God s Word. How we respond will depend often on many things. Perhaps the greatest obstacle to listening to God s Word is what Jesus refers to as the thorns or cares we encounter in life. These cares and concerns can and often do become barriers from hearing each other deeply. When we have too much on our minds, it s hard to listen to anyone closely. Our thoughts, emotions, and concerns often get in the way and we neither hear God, nor do we hear others. If we can do nothing else, we must pray for an open and listening heart so that God s Word can find a home in us. This means a willingness to listen no matter what consequences come from it. Listening can be a very difficult and sometimes frightening thing to do because we may hear words that will call us to change. Yet it is only by dying to whatever keeps God out, will we bear much fruit. 1

FIFTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME JULY 16, 2017 CELEBRATING THE SAINTS Saint Anselm of Nonantola, Abbot (+803) In 564 the Lombards, a Germanic tribe, established a kingdom in Italy that lasted for over 200 years. Anselm was a Lombard nobleman who had married the sister of Aistulf, the duke of Friuli. When Aistulf was named king of the Lombards, Anselm succeeded him as duke of Friuli. Despite his great success in the craft of war making, Anselm longed for the peace of the cloister. He began to foster monastic life by building monasteries at Fanano and Nonantola, on the well-traveled road through the Lombard kingdom. At long last, Anselm could no longer hold off the desire to enter monastic life himself, and went to Nonantola as a monk. Around 753, Pope Stephen II named him the abbot of Nonantola, and gave him the relics of Pope Saint Sylvester, whose name the monastery bore thereafter. Anselm expanded the abbey with hospitals and hospices. Aistulf endowed Fanano and Nonantola. Upon Aistulf s death, his successor, King Desiderius, was hostel to Anselm. He unseated Anselm and threatened Pope Hadrian in Rome with invasion. Anselm fled with his monks to the Monastery of Monte Cassino, and Pope Hadrian enlisted the assistance of Charlemagne for protection against King Desiderius. Charlemagne crossed the Alps and definitively defeated the Lombards in battle, thereby ending their war. Anselm was able to return to his monastery and pass his last days in peace at Nonantola. In the next century, the Abbey of St. Sylvester would become famous for its scriptorium. Saint Anselm of Nonantola s feast is celebrated on March 3 rd. PARISH GROUP OF THE WEEK The Avilas are a diocesan organization of men and women committed to a ministry of prayer for vocations, especially to the priesthood and to religious life. Under the patronage of St. Teresa of Avila, the Avilas meet every first Saturday for 8:00am Mass and prayer. To join, please call the rectory for the name and number of the person to contact. INTERESTED IN BECOMING CATHOLIC If you know someone seeking to know God, why not ask them to consider joining the Catholic Church through RCIA? They will learn about the Catholic while growing in their relationship with God. Encourage them to contact Fr. Peter at the rectory or by email frpeter@stanthonypaduaparma.org. SUNDAY PRESCHOOL Parents of 3, 4, and 5 year olds, we are now taking registrations for our Sunday preschool program. Classes are held on Sunday mornings from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. in the school. Classes begin October 8 th, 2017. Registration forms are available at the rectory, and online at the parish website www.stanthonypaduaparma.org. SEMINARIAN OF THE WEEK Every week, our parish will promote vocations by encouraging the community to pray for our diocesan seminarians. Please pray for Martin McGervey. WEEKLY MASS REMINDER If you need to excuse yourself during Mass, please try to do so during the natural breaks of the Mass. It is distracting to parishioners when someone leaves, especially during the Gospel or the Eucharistic Prayer. MYSTAGOGICAL MOMENTS Mystagogy (mist-a-go-gee) is prayerful reflection on the presence of God in the midst of events. This section will offer a question to begin your conversation with God. Question: Were you distracted at Mass today? Why? What can you do to focus on God? 2

ST. ANTHONY OF PADUA CHURCH 50+ SOCIAL CLUB St. Anthony's 50+ Social Club will have our meeting on Thursday July 20, 2017 in the Hospitality Room of the church. All 50+ers are welcome. The meeting will start at noon with the Rosary and then we will enjoy some pastry, coffee, or tea. We play bingo for $1 a card with all money collected given out as prize money, join other players for a game of Pinnacle cards, or just enjoy the camaraderie with fellow social club members. We hope to see you there! SOCIAL CONCERNS COMMISSION The St. Anthony Social Concerns volunteers will be serving lunch at the West Side Catholic Center on Tuesday, July 18, 2017. Your homemade desserts are truly appreciated by the people who eat at the center. We are asking for brownies (preferably without icing), cookies, bar cookies and even banana or pumpkin, etc. breads that can be sliced. You can drop off your bakery at the rectory on Monday, July 17, 2017. If you would like to help us in our mission to serve the needy and you really don t like to bake, please consider a cash donation to help defray the cost of our meals. Any donations are welcome. Thank you. YOU RE WORTH IT! Have you ever felt like everyone around you had it all together? Loving marriage, great kids, no health issues, no troubles. When they don't talk about their difficulties you assume they have none. So you keep quiet about your own struggles, afraid you won t be accepted if anyone knew what was really going on with you. If this sounds familiar, you re not alone. The Women s Faith Ministry invites all women to attend a book study, You re Worth It! The book reveals ways to help change how you feel about yourself by discovering how Jesus feels about you. If you would like the support and encouragement of other women in your journey of faith, then consider joining us each Wednesday beginning August 2 through September 20 from 7 to 8 p.m. in the Hospitality Room at St. Anthony. Although it is not mandatory to attend all sessions, it benefits you to do so. If interested, your RSVP is needed by calling the parish rectory at (440) 842-2666 or by email at wfmstanthony@gmail.com no later than July 24 for ordering books and materials. There is no cost to attend. PARMA, OHIO CATECHISTS, AIDES AND VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR 2017-2018 PSR Please prayerfully consider being a part of the important ministry of passing on the Catholic Faith to our young people. FIFTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME JULY 16, 2017 LIGHTHOUSE CATHOLIC MEDIA Please check out the new CD s on the Lighthouse display in the gathering space. There are five new selections. Love Sacrifice Trust: He showed Us the Way; The Treasure of Our Soul: The Apostles Creed; The Case for Jesus: The Biblical and Historical Evidence for Christ; The Chaplet of Divine Mercy in Song; and Mary: The Indispensable Mother of God. Our featured selection this week is, The Case for Jesus: The Biblical and Historical Evidence for Christ. Dr. Brant Pitre, scripture scholar and bestselling author, uses biblical and historical evidence to bolster the case for Jesus by exposing the problems with the many false theories that have been introduced over the past hundred years resulting in widespread skepticism about the reliability of Christian faith. He tackles head-on questions like: Were the four Gospels written anonymously? Did Jesus claim to be God? Did Jesus fulfill the Jewish prophecies of the Messiah? And many more. CATHOLIC GLOSSARY Zucchetto: A zucchetto is a skull-cap typically worn by bishops, cardinals, and the Pope. A bishop wears a Magenta colored zucchetto. A cardinal wears a red colored zucchetto. The Holy Father wears a white colored zucchetto. CHRISTIAN SPIRITUALITY CORNER "Every time I hear anyone speak of the Sacred Heart of Jesus or of the Blessed Sacrament I feel an indescribable joy. It is as if a wave of precious memories, sweet affections and joyful hopes swept over my poor person, making me tremble with happiness and filling my soul with tenderness. These are loving appeals from Jesus who wants me wholeheartedly there, at the source of all goodness, his Sacred Heart, throbbing mysteriously behind the Eucharistic veils... I love to repeat today 'Sweet Heart of my Jesus, make me love You more and more.' Pope St. John XXIII WEEKLY WORK OF MERCY Say a prayer for those who are mourning the loss of a family member or close friend. RELIGIOUS ORDER OF THE WEEK Order: Institute of Christ the King Sovereign Priest Origin: The Institute of Christ the King Sovereign Priest is a Society of Apostolic Life of Pontifical Right whose goal is the honor of God and the sanctification of priests in the service of the Church and souls. The Institute was founded in 1990 by Monsignor Gilles Wach and Father Philippe Mora in Gabon, Africa. Charism: An integral part of the Institute's charism is the use of the traditional Latin Liturgy of 1962 for the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass and the other sacraments. Motto: Live the truth in charity Website: http://www.institute-christ-king.org/ HEY CATHOLIC! DID YOU KNOW Did you know that Vatican City is about.17 square miles in size? Compare that to the city of Parma which is 20.07 square miles. That is why Vatican City is the smallest country in the world. EVANGELIZATION TIP Over your lunch break, find a nearby parish and visit with Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament for a few minutes. It will make your day, and your colleagues day, better. 2018 MASS INTENTION BOOK The 2018 Mass Intention Book will open to the general parish community for all remaining mass times on Wednesday August 2, 2017 at 8:30 AM in the rectory office. If you will be celebrating a significant wedding anniversary during 2018 (25th, 50th, etc.) please contact the office prior to August 2, 2017 to schedule your date. The suggested offering for a Mass in the Diocese of Cleveland is $10.00. Parishioners may request up to 2 week-end Masses and up to 4 weekday Masses at this time. 4
