First, Jesus makes His identity know to us in the Breaking of the Bread. Then Jesus enlightens us to the meaning of our lives joined to His dying and rising through the proclamation of Scripture. Finally, Jesus commissions us to be His witnesses to the ends of the earth, as we are sent forth at the conclusion of Mass. Through the Mass we are links in the unbroken chain of testimony to Jesus and to the purpose of His coming among us. This testimony was initially given to the apostles who have handed it on to us. It is our duty and our glory to hand it on to those who will come after us. When Jesus comes again, we shall see how strong or how weak a link we have been in this mighty tradition. It will depend on how clearly our lives are judged to be in harmony with our belief that Jesus, by His dying has destroyed our death and by His rising restored our lives. 1

THIRD SUNDAY OF EASTER APRIL 15, 2018 CELEBRATING THE SAINTS Saint Germaine Cousin, Virgin (1579-1601) Germaine was born to a poor farmworker and his wife in the village of Pibrac, France in 1579. She was born with a deformed hand and soon after developed the characteristic neck swelling of scrofula. Germaine s mother soon died, and her father remarried. Fearing that Germaine would spread disease to the family, Germaine s new stepmother insisted that she sleep on a rough wooden plank under the stairs or in the family s barn. She sent the young girl as soon as she was able to tend the family s sheep. But Germaine did not long remain lonely. She dwelt on the rosary and the daily saying of the Angelus. Though the villagers initially distained her, the littlest ones would visit her. She taught them with kindness and shared her meager scraps with them. It was said that a rushing stream would part when Germaine was on her way to Mass and flowers tumbled from the girl s apron when her stepmother caught her taking food to the poor. Moved by these accounts of holiness, Germaine s parents asked her into their home again, but by now Germaine was content with her lot. Not long after this she was found dead on her bed. She was only twenty-two years old. Saint Germaine was buried opposite the altar of the church at Pibrac. Some forty-three years later, her tomb was opened and her remains were found intact. A flood of miracles followed, over 400 of which were documented as part of her beatification process. She was canonized in 1867 and her feast day is celebrated on June 15 th. VOLUNTEERS NEEDED Our Bingo program is in need of volunteers to help as instant bingo ticket sellers and floor workers. You do not have to commit to working every week, just a few hours of your time even once a month will help. No experience necessary! To learn more please contact Fr. Dale at the rectory (440) 842-2666 or stop down at Bingo any Thursday and speak to Gerry. The Bingo program is a vital help in meeting our parish s ever increasing financial obligations. Please consider lending a hand. 50+ SOCIAL CLUB St. Anthony's 50+ Social Club will meet Thursday April 19th. All 50+ers are welcome. Reduce your isolation, make new friends, or just enjoy the camaraderie with fellow social club members. Husbands and wives are welcome. The meeting will start at noon with the Rosary. Come and enjoy pizza and a salad, coffee or tea. We will have a guest speaker from UH who will discuss the topic of warning signs of a heart attack. Time permitting, we play bingo for $1 a card with all money collected given out as prize money, or join other players for a game of Pinochle cards. Hope to see you there. CONFIRMATION CATECHIST NEEDED Confirmation at St. Anthony Parish is conferred in the fall of the student s freshman year of high school. This November St. Anthony of Padua Parish will have 48 of our young people celebrating the Sacrament of Confirmation. This summer they will begin their Confirmation Preparation by completing service work for the church and the community. Starting in September, they will meet for seven Sundays leading up to Confirmation in November. We are in need of Confirmation catechists. If you are interested in volunteering or want to find out more about the program, please call Randy Harris at 440-842-2666. SACRAMENT OF CONFIRMATION (ADULTS) The Sacrament of Confirmation helps us to live the Christian life through the gifts of the Holy Spirit. If you are an adult and have never received this Sacrament, contact Fr. Peter at the rectory or by email frpeter@stanthonypaduaparma.org. PSR RE-REGISTRATION 2018-2019 PSR registration for the 2018-2019 school year is now underway. We are asking you to fill out the registration form and return it as soon as possible. This will aide us in planning class size and ordering books. For new students, registration forms can be picked up in the Religious Education Office in the school or by downloading the form from our web site www.stanthonypaduaparma.org. If you have any questions regarding registration, please call Randy Harris at 440-842-2666. 2

DID YOU KNOW Did you know that the month of April is typically dedicated to the Blessed Sacrament? Since Holy Thursday, the day on which we celebrate the institution of the Sacrament of Holy Eucharist, usually falls in April, the Church dedicates this month to devotion to the Blessed Sacrament. Perhaps an extra visit to the Blessed Sacrament is in order MOTHER S DAY CARDS Mother s Day Mass Cards will be sold after most Masses starting next weekend, April 21/22; and the following weekends of April 28/29; and May 5/6. Cards may also be purchased at the rectory during regular business hours. MARRIAGE AND FAMILY Peace be with you (John 20:19). The peace Jesus promises us often comes through forgiving your spouse when he or she hurts you. Is there something you re finding hard to forgive? Take it to Jesus in prayer, and ask for His peace. Daily Marriage Tip for April 8, 2018 from http:// www.foryourmarriage.org CONFIRMATION REMINDER A mandatory parent and student Confirmation meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, April 18, at 6:30 p.m. in the church. EVANGELIZATION TIP Check and see if your family has a Catholic Bible or the Catechism of the Catholic Church. These are two very good books to have in the home. Put them in a public place so that others may see and read. MYSTAGOGICAL MOMENTS Mystagogy (mist-a-go-gee) is prayerful reflection on the presence of God in the midst of events. THIRD SUNDAY OF EASTER APRIL 15, 2018 CHURCH ETIQUETTE WITH MONSIGNOR MANNERS Monsignor Manners says: A Catholic should never chew gum in the Church. Upon entering the Church, gum should be removed and properly disposed. VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES With the season of Spring also comes opportunities to volunteer at the Jesuit Retreat House (JRH), 5629 State Road, in Parma. Assistance is needed in areas such as carpentry, clerical work, gardening/ landscaping, hospitality, housekeeping, mechanical work and more. Please share your time and be of service in this faith filled center. For more information, please contact Sharon Schultz, JRH Volunteer Coordinator, at 440-570- 7951 or sharonschultz222@gmail.com. CATHOLIC GLOSSARY Synoptic Gospels: The Synoptic Gospels are the Gospels of Matthew, Mark and Luke. These Gospels include many of the same stories with similarities in event sequence and wording. We regularly listen to the Synoptic Gospels at Sunday Mass. WEEKLY MASS REMINDER The Priest breaks the Eucharistic Bread, with the assistance, if the case requires, of the Deacon or a concelebrant. The gesture of breaking bread done by Christ at the Last Supper, which in apostolic times gave the entire Eucharistic Action its name, signifies that the many faithful are made one body (1 Cor 10:17) by receiving Communion from the one Bread of Life, which is Christ, who for the salvation of the world died and rose again. The fraction or breaking of bread is begun after the sign of peace and is carried out with proper reverence, and should not be unnecessarily prolonged or accorded exaggerated importance. This rite is reserved to the Priest and the Deacon. The Priest breaks the Bread and puts a piece of the host into the chalice to signify the unity of the Body and Blood of the Lord in the work of salvation, namely, of the Body of Jesus Christ, living and glorious. The supplication Agnus Dei (Lamb of God) is usually sung by the choir or cantor with the congregation replying; or at least recited aloud. This invocation accompanies the fraction of the bread and, for this reason, may be repeated as many times as necessary until the rite has been completed. The final time it concludes with the words grant us peace. from the General Instruction of the Roman Missal, 83. LIGHTHOUSE CATHOLIC MEDIA Stop by the Lighthouse Media display in the hallway off of the Church gathering area and check out our CD selection. The CDs are great to listen to while driving in your car. This is a great way to grow spirituality and gain new insights into our Catholic Faith. CAN YOU HELP? Do you have some extra time? Do you have a need to give back? Find your place to give with love and compassion - by being a volunteer at University Hospital Hospice. For information regarding upcoming training classes please contact Sharon Secura at (440) 743-4943. CHRISTIAN SPIRITUALITY CORNER Do not lose your inner peace for anything whatsoever, not even if your whole world seems upset.
