St. John the Baptist Parish Plymouth January 21, 2018 Dear Parishioners: Gee, we re on such a roll with all these new things coming our way in the New Year that sometimes they race ahead of us before we have an opportunity to let you know about them. Case in point: the chapel (a.k.a. crying room ). This story began last June, when I encouraged several groups the Pastoral Council, the Finance Council, the Prayer and Worship Committee and the staff to read a book entitled Rebuilt. (It s the true story about how a priest and his lay associate in a place named Timonium a community just north of Baltimore re-fashioned what seemed to be a dying parish into a thriving, dynamic one.) In late September, we met to discuss the book and our reaction to it. It seemed that everyone was intrigued by their story and wondered how the lessons learned in Timonium might be applied to SJB. One of the first messages we learned had to do with hospitality: how having a warm, inviting environment with equally warm, inviting greeters makes a world of difference, especially when it comes to first impressions (which are usually cast at a weekend Mass hence one chapter s title: It s the weekend, Stupid! ). So, we started thinking aloud about these topics around the Prayer and Worship table, and Rebuilt-triggered thoughts soon gave rise to some homegrown ones about what we do and what we could/should be doing at SJB. From that point, we conducted training up-dates for our ministers (Ministers of the Word [lectors], Ministers of Hospitality [greeters], and Eucharistic Ministers). We added some exterior signage to the Church and School buildings to help our guests get to where they want to go. We removed some pews to make handicapped seating more accessible for people using wheelchairs and walkers. And a few weeks ago, I directed that Perpetual Adoration and weekday Masses be returned to the Sanctuary from a downstairs classroom and the chapel, respectively. As for the chapel (which we would like to call the Atrium ), we intend to continue to utilize it for visitations prior to funerals. But we will be using it for other purposes, too. You may have noticed, for example, that last weekend it held a display of materials related to the Living Way of the Cross. This weekend (as was announced in last week s bulletin), we brought back Children s Liturgy of the Word during Sunday Mass, conducting it in the Atrium. (We ve removed the last three rows of pews on the side closest to the Reconciliation Room to facilitate this activity.) Have you noticed recently how people are sticking around after Mass, often standing in the aisles in Church, to chat with others? How neat is that! We are talking about the possibility of re-configuring the Atrium so that parishioners might have a more comfortable place to sit and socialize after Masses on weekends. More about this later. Oh, Grace Urbanski, the author of Whispers in the Pew, is coming to SJB on Wednesday, March 7th, for what promises to be a fantastic family-focused presentation entitled Unstoppable Catholic Families. She will begin in Church at 6:30 p.m. Babysitting for younger children will be provided. More information on this later, too. For now, just mark your calendars. Third Sunday in Ordinary Time January 21, 2018 A Message from the Principal s Desk ~ Catholic education not only teaches general academics, but also balances education with spiritual immersion. As each child s awareness of God develops, he or she becomes an instrument of God s grace. At St. John the Baptist School, we encourage our students to share this grace with the greater community and in the world. The students take the lessons they have learned and use the scriptures they have learned as a tool for guidance and inspiration to get them through life s challenges and to serve others. Here are some examples that share how St. John the Baptist School has served others in the past: Plymouth Food Pantry non-perishable food donations Participating in Angel Hugs projects Jump Rope for Heart/Hoops for Heart Diabetes Walk Pennies for Patients for families dealing with childhood cancer Donations for Safe Harbor Shoe Project Catholic education provides many opportunities for students to live their faith. On January 28 th, I invite you to our open house and registration following Mass. Take a tour of the school, meet our excellent staff and see for yourself the many ways that St. John the Baptist encourages and molds students to live a life with Christ in the center.
