SUNDAY THOUGHT 2 Corinthians 5:6-10 No one likes to be judged, but that s what St. Paul tells us will happen to each of us in our Second Reading for today s Mass. In the evening of our lives, we will all appear before the judge on that day. Will it be God or ourselves who will decide? God doesn t need to keep score. All God has to do is look into our hearts to tell whether we have been faithful to His great commandment of love or not. If our hearts have become hard and bitter, letting no one in and keeping God out, and extending ourselves to no one, then God will have the answer about our lives. On the other hand, if God sees that our hearts have become welcoming and open to those who need us, then that answer will be plain to see also. The punishment will simply be self-inflicted. 1

ELEVENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME JUNE 17, 2018 CELEBRATING THE SAINTS The Holy Innocents, Martyrs (1 st Century) Anyone who is struggling with the temptation of ambition does well to remember murderous King Herod and his child victims whom the Church venerates as the Holy Innocents. Having learned of the existence of a newborn king of the Jews (Matt. 2:2) from the wise men who had come to Bethlehem to worship him, Herod who at the time was the ruler of the Jewish people under the Roman rule, acted decisively to wipe out any potential rival. He sent his men to kill all the male children under the age of two in Bethlehem and the vicinity (Matt. 2:16-18). It was ancient Jewish historian, Josephus, who wrote that Herod was a man of great barbarity toward everybody. One ancient martyrology names Herod s victims the holy babes and suckling s. In the West, they have been venerated since the 6 th century during the Octave of Christmas as martyrs because they died in Christ s stead. In the East the number of those killed is traditionally said to be 14,000, but the actual number of the children Herod murdered was probably no more than fifty. The Christian poet, Prudentius, honored the Holy Innocents in his hymn for Epiphany as the martyres flores of the first buds of martyrdom: All hail, sweet flowers of martyrdom, cut down in life s bright dawning hour. And shattered by the foe of Christ, as rosebuds in the whirling storm. The feast of the Holy Innocents is celebrated each year on December 28 th. 2019 MASS INTENTION BOOK The 2019 Mass Intention Book will open to the general parish community for all remaining mass times on Wednesday July 11, 2018 at 8:30 AM in the rectory office. If you will be celebrating a significant wedding anniversary during 2019 (25th, 50th, etc.) please contact the office prior to July 11, 2018 to schedule your date. The suggested offering for a Mass in the Diocese of Cleveland is $10.00. Parishioners may request up to 2 week-end Masses and up to 4 weekday Masses at this time. BAPTISMAL CLASS The next parish Baptism Class for parents having their first child baptized is scheduled for Thursday, June 21, 2018 in the parish rectory. The diocese requires parents who are having their first baby baptized attend a prebaptismal class. This class provides the parents the opportunity to recall the meaning of having their child baptized and prepares them for the actual celebration of the sacrament. The program lasts about an hour and begins at 6:30 p.m. There is no pre-registration. Just come. ANNUAL MISSION APPEAL WEEKEND The weekend of June 30, July 1, 2018 will be our annual Mission Appeal Weekend. Our Mission speaker will be Fr. William Rowland, SM, who will speak to us on the work of the Marist Fathers. Since its official recognition by the Church in 1838, the Society of Mary (Marist Fathers and Brothers) has committed itself to the missions in the southwestern Pacific. Since that time, the Marists have expanded into areas in Africa, Asia and South America. Today there are nearly 230 priests and brothers working in bush stations, teaching in schools and seminaries, ministering in training institutions, providing direct service to the poor, oppressed and marginalized, and contributing to the development of people for a better society and a strong local Church. Contributions to the Marists will help them in their mission of witness to the Gospel, service to the needy and helping the local Church to build a strong base for its promising future. Thank you for whatever you can do to help them in their life-long commitment and work. 50+ SOCIAL CLUB St. Anthony's 50+ Social Club will meet Thursday June 21, 2018. Any 50+er is welcome. The meeting will start at noon with the Rosary. Come and enjoy a salad and pizza, coffee or tea. We will view Internet Famous Physical Therapists Bob Schrupp and Brad Heineck (Bob and Brad) present... 10 Neck, Arm, and Trunk Stretches performed while being seated. Time permitting, we play bingo for $1 a card with all money collected given out as prize money, or join other players for a game of Pinochle cards. Hope to see you there. 2

ST. ANTHONY OF PADUA CHURCH GOD IS INVITING God desires all people to know Him, to love Him, and to be part of His family. If you know someone who is considering God s call to join the Church, invite them to consider the RCIA process and to contact Fr. Peter at the rectory or frpeter@stanthonypaduaparma.org. WEEKLY MASS REMINDER The main elements of which the Eucharistic Prayer consists may be distinguished from one another in this way: The thanksgiving The acclamation The epiclesis, in which, by means of particular invocations, the Church implores the power of the Holy Spirit that the gifts offered by human hands be consecrated, that is, become Christ s Body and Blood, and that the unblemished sacrificial Victim to be consumed in Communion may be for the salvation of those who will partake of it. To be continued from the General Instruction of the Roman Missal, 79c. SEMINARIANS OF THE WEEK This week, we pray for Martin DeSantis, Cameron Ferrell, and Michael Garvin. WEEKLY MASS REMINDER (2) If it is difficult for you to come forward to receive Holy Communion, notify the ushers and they will bring Holy Communion to you. HEY CATHOLIC! DID YOU KNOW Did you know that Thursdays are typically dedicated to the Holy Eucharist? Since the institution of the Sacrament of Holy Eucharist took place on Holy Thursday, this day of week is dedicated to the Blessed Sacrament. Consider making a holy hour before the Blessed Sacrament on Thursdays. CATHOLIC GLOSSARY Fermentum: The Fermentum is the particle of the Sacred Host dropped into the priest s chalice filled with Precious Blood prior to Holy Communion. This is an ancient practice of the Church that has continued on to this day. Winners of our 2018 Carnival Main Raffle Drawing : Sue Osterling $3,000.00 James Ahlers $1,000.00 Patricia Watts $500.00 Mary & Mark Katanik $300.00 Cathy Kroll $200.00 Thank you to everyone who bought and/or sold raffle tickets! Church Etiquette with Monsignor Manners Monsignor Manners says: If one is late for Mass, a Catholic should take the first available pew. Walking towards the front pews while the Mass is in progress can be distracting to the priest and to the congregation. EVANGELIZATION TIP Every gift and talent comes from God and should be used for the purpose of the Gospel. If you have a talent, use it for God s glory. If you have a talent that can help the parish in its work of evangelization, contact the rectory. Whether it is cook, garden, electrical, painting, construction, or something else, your parish can use it. Volunteer to help and you will be doing your part to bring about the Kingdom of God.
