SUNDAY THOUGHT Luke 3:10-18 Teresa Setele Elizabeth Taylor Contributions for December 8/9 2018: Total Offering: $16,398.50 Sunday Collection: $12,849.00 Faith Direct: $3,549.50 Feast of the Immaculate Conception: $1,710.00 Poor Box: $139.00 On this the Third Sunday of Advent, the readings present us with two extremes. Saint Paul tells us through his Letter to the Philippians to never stop rejoicing over the good that God has planned for us. On the other hand, St. Luke in our Gospel passage, through the words of John the Baptist, we are given a stern warning that God is very unhappy with our misdeeds. What are we to make of these two extremes? God s joy over us and at the same time His threat of punishment? As in so many things, it s a matter of balance. God does ask us to share in His joy, but we should never lose sight of what will be required of us to do so. Joy requires the discipline of following Jesus in our daily lives. The people of John the Baptist s day asked him what they needed to do to be happy and his response was quite clear. They were to share their food with the hungry and their clothing with the poor. He told the tax collectors not to cheat and soldiers not to bully people and be content with their pay. Each person was to do what was right and just and from the hard work of doing good, joy will spring. To follow Christ is its own reward and there is no reward better. 1

THIRD SUNDAY OF ADVENT DECEMBER 16, 2018 CELEBRATION OF THE SAINTS Saint Luigi Scrosoppi, Priest (1804-1884) Confession Schedule 2018 Luigi was born into a devote working-class family in Udine, Italy. At twelve Luigi entered the diocesan seminary. Well before he was ordained, Luigi manifested a great love for the poor. While still a seminarian he devoted himself to the construction of an orphanage and supported his brother Carlo, already a priest, in its administration. In time through his efforts, he founded the House of the Destitute which grew to shelter a hundred boarders and 230 day students. Soon Luigi began to gather young women to teach the residents useful skills like sewing and to give them a fundamental education in reading, writing, and math. In 1837, nine of these women professed vows in a new congregation, the Sisters of Providence. Luigi welcomed girls from diverse backgrounds into the new order, insisting only that each have an education in affection. Drawn by the charism of Saint Philip Neri, Luigi joined the Congregation of the Oratory. When in the 1860 s intense anti-clericalism forced the Oratory houses to close, Luigi was able to preserve his Houses of the Destitute. Before his death in 1884, he had founded twelve houses of the order and their work had grown to include the sick and the elderly. Saint Luigi Scrosoppi died on April 3, 1884 after a long illness. He was canonized by Saint Pope John Paul II on June 10, 2001. His feast day is celebrated on April 3rd. ST. ANTHONY OF PADUA CHURCH BLOOD DRIVE The Knights of Columbus will be sponsoring a blood drive on December 16 from 9:00 am to 1:30 pm. The Vitalant bloodmobile will be in front of the school for the event. Lifeshare recently changed their name to Vitalant, but they still have the same qualified staff. Walk in donations are encouraged and greatly appreciated. Please give the gift of life during this holiday season. CHRISTMAS MASS CARDS Christmas Mass Cards will be sold after most masses this weekend, December 15/16. Cards for the living are $2.00 and prayer cards for our deceased love ones are $1.00. Cards may also be purchased at the rectory during regular business hours through Thursday, December 20. Your loved ones will be remembered in the celebration of the Mass on Christmas Day. CHRISTMAS WAFERS Christmas Wafers (Oplatki) are now available after masses and will remain on sale while supplies last. They also may be purchased at the rectory office during regular business hours. The cost remains $3.00 for a package of four (4) wafers. Oplatki, pronounced oh-pwaht-kee, are thin wafers, similar to Communion hosts. They are made of two ingredients: wheat flour and water. These wafers have beautiful Christmas images stamped into them. You do not have to be Polish to enjoy this beautiful tradition with your family. Since the wafers come in an envelope with the Oplatki tradition and history printed on the back, you can share this explanation with your loved ones. Use it at your Christmas meal. PARMA, OHIO SUNDAY MISSAL FOR 2019 Available on our book rack is a pocket size Sunday Missal for 2019. This missal contains the Sunday Scripture readings, mass prayers, and reflections for prayer. The suggested offering is $4.00. They would make great stocking stuffers for everyone in the family. SACRAMENT OF CONFIRMATION (ADULTS) The Sacrament of Confirmation helps us to live the Christian life through the gifts of the Holy Spirit. If you are an adult and have never received this Sacrament, contact Fr. Peter at the rectory or by email frpeter@stanthonypaduaparma.org. Classes start in January 2019. WEEKLY MASS REMINDER The third Sunday of Advent is called Gaudete Sunday (coming from the first word of the Latin Entrance Antiphon for this day, meaning Rejoice ) and the liturgical color may be rose instead of purple. This is the Church's way of further heightening our expectation as we draw ever nearer to the Solemnity of Christmas from the Universal Norms on the Liturgical Year and the General Roman Calendar, 42c. SAVE THE DATE The St. Anthony of Padua Athletic Association will once again be holding a Night At The Races fundraiser on Saturday, February 16, 2019 in our school gym. THIRD SUNDAY OF ADVENT DECEMBER 16, 2018 HEY CATHOLIC! DID YOU KNOW Did you know that many Catholics have contributed to the good of society through science? Jonathan I. Lunine, born June 26, 1959, is an American planetary scientist and physicist who teaches at Cornell University. He has published more than 300 research papers and has helped found the Society of Catholic Scientists. More Catholics to come in the coming weeks SEMINARIANS OF THE WEEK This week, we pray for John Jaehyn Ryu, Frederick Schlueter, Ryan Schmeltzer, and Benjamin Schweigert, MARRIAGE AND FAMILY When you receive Christmas cards in the mail, pray that evening for the people who sent the card. Display the cards visibly in your home to remember those family members and friends throughout Advent. Daily Marriage Tip for December 5, 2018 from http:// www.foryourmarriage.org CHRISTIAN SPIRITUALITY CORNER We desire to be able to welcome Jesus at Christmastime, not in a cold manger of our heart, but in a heart full of love and humility, in a heart so pure, so immaculate, so warm with love for one another. St. Teresa of Kolkata LIGHTHOUSE CATHOLIC MEDIA Please check out the new selections on our display. The selection of CDs will help prepare you for Advent and Christmas. Listening to the CDs is a great way to develop and grow your spiritual life. FIFTH SUNDAY ROSARY The Knights of Columbus have made it a goal to pray the rosary prior to the 10am Mass that happens to fall on the Fifth Sunday of the month. December 30th is our next Fifth Sunday rosary at 9:15am just prior to the 10am Mass. This is open to the entire parish and we encourage you to participate with us. We will be meeting on the side of the church near the Blessed Mother s statue. Please come and pray with us. PLEASE DONATE The Knights of Columbus are conducting a peanut butter drive to help support a local food pantry initiative that is being coordinated with Parma City Council President Sean Brennan and All Faiths Pantry. Please place your donated peanut butter jars in the box in the back of church in the gathering room. We will be collecting peanut butter from now until December 21 st. Thank you for your support and for helping those in our community. CATHOLIC GLOSSARY Rose: Rose is a liturgical color used on the Third Sunday of Advent and on the Fourth Sunday of Lent. The color is half purple and half white, demonstrating that we are halfway through Advent or Lent. It calls the Church to rejoice because Christmas or Easter is coming soon. 4

BLESSING OF THE WEEK - BLESSING OF A CHRISTMAS TREE (WITH NO PRIEST OR DEACON) Once gathered, all stand and sign themselves with the Sign of the Cross, while the minister says: Minister: Blessed be the name of the Lord. All: Now and for ever. Reader: Brothers and sisters, listen to the words of the apostle Paul to Titus: But when the kindness and generous love of God our savior appeared, not because of any righteous deeds we had done but because of his mercy, he saved us through the bath of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit, whom he richly poured out on us through Jesus Christ our savior, so that we might be justified by his grace and become heirs in hope of eternal life. With hands joined, the minister says: Minister: Lord our God, we praise you for the light of creation: the sun, the moon, and the stars of the night. We praise you for the light of Israel: the Law, the prophets, and the wisdom of the Scriptures. We praise you for Jesus Christ, your Son: he is Emmanuel, God-with-us, the Prince of Peace, who fills us with the wonder of your love. Lord God, let your blessing come upon us as we illumine this tree. May the light and cheer it gives be a sign of the joy that fills our hearts. May all who delight in this tree come to the knowledge and joy of salvation. We ask this through Christ our Lord. All: Amen adapted from the Book of Blessings Make a Charitable IRA Gift this Year If you are 70½ or older and own a traditional IRA, please consider making an IRA charitable rollover gift this year.
