Pastor s Notes Our first reading shows the boldness and courage of St. Peter in proclaiming the Gospel. It is very different from his behavior during the arrest of Jesus. He is now transformed by the Holy Spirit and presents himself as the leader of the nascent Church. Peter uses traditional rabbinical techniques by commenting on Sacred Scripture in view of the current events, especially the Resurrection. He is addressing the people who cried out, Crucify Him! Peter, now more like Christ, calls them to repentance just like John the Baptist, but with the added dimension of the actual forgiveness of sins and the reception of the Holy Spirit. He invites those estranged from God to accept the message and be baptized, and 3,000 do just that. St. Peter, in the second reading, points out the many experiences of injustice that come our way as opportunities to share in the example of what Jesus endured for us. This fraternal love eventually dissolves all forms of discrimination, the plague of our current times. This sacrificial offering brings about social justice because it makes us face the Truth that we are all made in the Image and Likeness of God. Only in this way can we get strength in adversity and humility in prosperity. St. Peter certainly learned this teaching the hard way when he denied Christ. Now he persuades us not to fall into the same trap. In the Gospel, Jesus presents Himself in His dual role as both man and God, the Good Shepherd and the Gate Keeper. As the Shepherd, and as His Apostles and their successors, He, and they, teach the faith authentically and spell out its obligations. They also provide us with the spiritual sustenance of the Holy Eucharist that gives us the ability to do the will of God. As the Gate Keeper, the Son of God will judge the living and the dead with mercy and impartiality. Today is Good Shepherd Sunday. Fittingly the Church proclaims this day as the Word Day of Prayer for Vocations. The Church urges us to pray for more priests, deacons, sisters and brothers. We, as a parish, are blessed with two priests, four deacons and three sisters. We should be truly grateful to God for this luxury. The Gospel implies the necessity for the ministerial priesthood to lead the local churches. It is only through the Sacrament of Holy Orders that the ministerial priesthood is made possible. Jesus wished His shepherds and teachers to be in one accord in His Church until the consummation of the world. While the faithful share in the common priesthood, because they too must share in the footsteps of Christ by offering up their bodies as sacrifices, they still cannot affect the Eucharist. The duty of an ordained priest is to rule and form God s priestly people especially by persuasion. Both common priests and ministerial priests must endeavor to help each other on their pilgrimage to the heavenly Father by prayer, the performance of good works and penitential expiations - for themselves and others for the sake of building up the Church. The more fervent our charity (giving till it hurts), the more closely we follow the suffering Christ to assist others in obtaining salvation. The common bond of the ministerial priesthood and the royal priesthood is service to each other through sacrifice. If you are patient when you suffer for doing what is good, this is a grace before God. (1 Pt 2:20b). Fr. Euk Scripture Meditation Whoever enters through me will be saved, and will come in and go out and find pasture. Jesus uses the image of a gate today to help us understand how we are to relate to him. He is our path to pasture, in other words, to the peace and prosperity that we long for. He shows us the way to find all that we need right there before us. Some people, however, may think that it s better to avoid the trouble of finding the gate and thus choose to enter another way instead. But Jesus says, Whoever does not enter a sheepfold through the gate but climbs over elsewhere is a thief and a robber. Although this is all cast in the gentle terms of an analogy about sheep, the message is actually rather stern. Jesus is telling us that if we don t follow him, we are taking the wrong course of action. He is not suggesting a kind of relativistic principle that says, Following me is one of many good options. No. He is telling us that in order to have life and have it more abundantly, we must follow the path that goes by way of Christ. This isn t always the easiest path to follow. It might mean taking the long way around a situation instead of a shortcut. It might mean waiting a little while to get to that pasture instead of hopping the fence and finding it on our own terms. Insisting on using the gate may also make us look like fools to those around us. But to be truly faithful followers of Jesus, we need to trust that his way is the best way. We need to trust that, by letting him lead, we will ultimately end up in the best possible pasture. In our culture, it is becoming less and less popular to believe in one true religion, but as Christians we know that Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life..
