3 Pastors Notes A couple of people have complained about the church being too cold or that the air conditioner is on when the church is not being used. We have an old system which is very hard to communicate with. The changes in the Microsoft operating systems have made critical components obsolete. We have only one computer that is maintaining the old system to keep the air conditioners working. To upgrade this single component would require a $6000 box plus someone to program the box to operate the two systems. I keep praying that the actual components outside will continue to work beyond their life span. When they go, it will probably cost us $200,000 to replace. Deacon Gino and I are working on a long-term plan anticipating its eventual demise. We thank you for keeping an eye on things and bringing them to our attention. In a few weeks Tim Rock from St. Catherine s is going to bring a seeing eye dog in-training to our church. This is to prepare the dog for bringing a blind person to church. Please try to act as if the dog is not in the church. Some of our school graduates have made some impressive accomplishments. One of our servers has been accepted at Princeton. The Eagle Scout, who made our out-door Stations of the Cross and is going into his junior year at St. John Vianney, has been awarded the Rensselaer Medal. If he chooses to go to Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, he will have a guarantee of $25,000 for tuition for up to 5 years. At St. Rose three of our recent graduates were exempted from their Latin final exam and at least one other was exempted from his geometry final exam. Congratulations to them and to Sister Cherree and our teachers for preparing them so well for their future! My curiosity was peaked with today s first reading from Zechariah when I came across Hadarimmon in the Plain of Megiddo. Who is Hadarimmon in the Plain of Megiddo? To make things more confusing other translations have it as Hadad Rimmon in the Plain of Megiddo. Migiddo was a strategic city that was located about 20 miles southeast of Haifa. Not only did it have good water, but it also had two important routes used by tradesmen and armies. One route connected Jerusalem with the Carmel region. The other connected Damascus with Egypt. Egypt dominated this city in the 15th century BCE. Joshua defeated one of the Egyptian kings there. Ahaziah, King of Judah, and Josiah died there. Migiddo may be the place where the final victory of Christ will take place (Rev. 16:16) at Armageddon (which translates as mound of Migiddo). Hadad and Rimmon were names of a storm god often associated with the god Baal, but it may actually refer to the death of Josiah. Well, I guess that all this is not helpful to understand the text, but at least we can see the strong association with the crucified Jesus who will come many centuries later. Happy Fathers Day!!! Fr. Euk Scripture Meditation "Once when Jesus was praying in solitude, and the disciples were with him..." The first line of today's Gospel presents a strange image. Jesus was both by himself and with others. He was somehow experiencing the solitude of personal prayer, but was also close enough to his followers to engage in conversation with them. Although we don't know exactly what the details were of this situation, it does suggest for us an example of what we might call spiritual "balance." Here we see Jesus taking time to be alone in prayer, but also taking time to engage in spiritual reflection with the other members of his community. He didn't sacrifice one for the other. He found a way to have both. We are called to do the same. Developing the habit of personal prayer is an essential part of our spiritual lives. Like Jesus, we too need to set aside time and space to pray by ourselves, connecting as individuals with our Father in heaven. Whether it be a few quiet moments in the morning, or time to pray at night, this kind of prayer keeps us connected to God. It enables us to give our own answer to the poignant question Jesus poses today, "But who do you say that I am?" Personal prayer alone, however, is not enough to fulfill us spiritually. We are also meant to participate in the larger community of believers, joining together with others in communal prayer and reflection. This, of course, happens every time we attend Mass as we gather together at church and join in the liturgy. For some, "sacrificing" our Sunday mornings week after week may seem like too much to ask. But this is one way we can carry out the challenging command of Christ to take up our cross and follow him. Faith to Move Mountains Last week was Faith to Move Mountains Commitment Weekend. On Mondays at 4:30 5:45 PM., we also offer Special Sacraments, Holy Innocents, and RCIC classes. AFTERNOON WEE WISDOM CLASSES will meet on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays. MONDAY and THURSDAY EVENING CLASSES will meet from 6:30PM until 7:45 PM for grades 1 to 8.
