3 Pastor s Notes Advent has two themes presence and expectation. Christ is present as the New Adam and He is in our midst. We must open the eyes of our hearts in gratitude to see His light which has entered into our history as the new source of life and goodness. He invites us to enter into His river of light. But Advent also means expectation. While the dark night of evil is strong, we pray with insistence. Come Jesus, come, give force to light and goodness; come where falsehood, ignorance of God, violence and injustice dominate. Come, Lord Jesus, give force to the good of the world and help us to be bearers of your light, agents of peace, witnesses of truth. Come Lord Jesus! The new year of the Church begins with the season of Advent which has a twofold purpose. The first 17 days prepare us for the Second Coming of Jesus. The last days of Advent prepare us for the first coming of Jesus, His incarnation. We also speak of a third coming of Christ when Jesus comes into our lives through faith and the Church. When King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon conquered Jerusalem in 587 BC, he destroyed the Temple built by Solomon and killed all the sons of Sedecias, the last descendant of the Davidic line (2 Kings 25:7). The Davidic dynasty, which was never faithful to God, was ended and the remainder of the Jews were brought to Babylon. All the expectations of the Jews were destroyed. Many probably lost all their belief in God. They probably concluded that if there was a God, He never would have done this. But the reality is that it all was the work of the Devil who led them back to idol worship. When the Jews returned from their seventy-five year Babylonian captivity, they rebuilt the Temple, but no direct descendant of David could take to the throne. I would bet that many would have thought the prophecies were merely fables. However, all the prophecies were pointed to a new kind of kingdom, the kingdom of the Good Shepherd who would be faithful to God. He will dwell as a prince among the people as a spiritual leader rather than an enthroned king. Today s reading from Isaiah expresses that longing for the God Who struck down their enemies in the past by mighty deeds. They longed for some kind of leader who would set things the way they used to be. God had another plan where weakness became strength. Imagine if we lived in those times. We probably would be hoping for something that would never happen. We would be feeling like the carpet was pulled from under our feet. We would be looking for something of this world that would only be a man-made fantasy. Fortunately, we know the real story, but we are still challenged by weak faith in God and our own sinfulness. Jesus tells us to be watchful. Watch for what? He wants us to live His lifestyle and wait in patience for Him to return and bring us to Heaven. But are we obeying or have we modified what God wants for us? Are we really watching? Let us pray to love God and to love our neighbor as our self. Only in this way can we hope to gain eternal life. Today s Gospel is the final discourse of Jesus before His Passion, Death and Resurrection. The Apostles, probably because of their lack of faith, all scattered as our redemption began. If it was not for the Resurrection, they probably would never have come back. But do we believe in the Resurrection and live in hope? Are we the type who will ask why God allows all this evil and not see that it is the Devil trying to destroy our image and likeness to God? Most people are quick to blame God for everything bad. Oddly they never recognize the ever presence of evil in the world. God in His love is trying to protect us, but the devil is cleverly leading us in the wrong direction. He is the Prince of Lies. Please pray for our parishioners who will only come to church at Christmas. May our prayers, alms giving and fasting bring them home to salvation. May they come to see that our existence depends on their generosity and their sharing their talents to keep us going. Fr. Euk Scripture Meditation "What I say to you, I say to all: 'Watch!'" The season of Advent begins with this exclamation from the Lord. He urges us, "Be watchful! Be alert!" This is not the time for a spiritual snooze. Advent is meant to serve as a wake-up call for those of us Christians who have a tendency to start drifting off after a while. We get into our routines, find the patterns that work for us, and then run the risk of just going through the motions. Maybe we say a morning prayer with consistency but have begun to forget to really think about the words. Perhaps we rouse ourselves enough to get to Mass on Sundays, but when we're there we let our minds daydream. Some of us might have made spiritual resolutions to overcome a bad habit or to begin some regular program of service, but instead of following through with the hard work of perseverance, we gave up the effort and fell back into our previous rut. Whatever the case, now is the time to shake ourselves free and to ask God to invigorate us once again. Now is the time to stop zoning out and start tuning in. Jesus' message today has the intention of getting our attention. He's doing what he can; the rest is up to us. As Advent begins, we would do well to pause for a few moments and reflect. What might be preventing me from being fully awake to my faith? What activities preoccupy my time and my thoughts? What bad habits blur my spiritual vision? How could I really listen to the voice of the Lord this Advent season? Saying a special prayer during these four weeks, committing to some spiritual reading, even simply putting an Advent wreath on the table: any of these things can help us stay awake as we continue watching and waiting for the coming of Christ.

Sisters in the Spirit Our Sisters in the Spirit meetings will resume, changing from Friday mornings to Wednesdays at 9:30 AM in the Narthex. We will meet the week of the 3rd Friday Gathering. This service can be accessed by contacting your pastor or parish priest who will provide additional information and a referral. The fee is $75 per session. If needed, financial assistance for short term counseling (up to 6 sessions) is available through the Diocese of Trenton Parish Counseling Services. St. William the Abbot Parish Mission Monday, Dec. 15th-17th Presenter: Fr. Guiseppe Maria Siniscalchi, CFR Each night there will be a talk by Fr. Guiseppe. 5 Giving Tree This Weekend Once again our parish will be preparing a Giving Tree to help make Christmas a little brighter for those who find themselves in need during this holiday season. Beginning Saturday, November 22nd, our Giving Tree will be in the narthex of the Church. The giving tree is decorated with paper ornaments. Each tag contains information about the gift recipient as well as a gift request. The cost of the gifts varies from a few dollars to perhaps the cost of a coat. When you select an ornament from the tree, please consider purchasing the requested gift. If you are unable to locate the gift that was requested, please substitute a comparable item in its place. TAPE THE PAPER ORNAMENT TO THE OUTSIDE OF THE PACKAGE. IT IS IMPORTANT THAT THE ORNAMENT BE AT- TACHED TO THE GIFT AS THIS IS THE ONLY METHOD WE HAVE FOR DISTRIBUTING THE GIFTS TO THE PROPER INDI- VIDUAL. All gifts MUST be returned to the church narthex no later than 1:00PM on Sunday, December 7th. Please return the gifts on time. The various organizations will be picking up the gifts the next day. Thank you. Winter Overnight Shelter Program St. Veronica's is once more opening its rectory to the homeless, every Monday night, starting December 1st continuing through March 30th. This is part of the Freehold Clergy Association's Winter Overnight Shelter Program. If you would like to prepare meals for our guests, as well as be a chaperone or a driver, please sign up at the narthex.
