3 Pastor s Notes I would like to thank all the young volunteers who cleaned up the front of the rectory. I am hoping to fix it up some time in the future so that when cars drive by, they will know there is a church worth visiting. A number of health care professionals have approached me on ethical problems they have been experiencing in their daily work. Perhaps we could start a monthly meeting covering various concerns. Since the US Supreme Court has ruled that pharmacists have lost their right to refuse to sell lethal healthcare products, we may be in for a stormy future. In the mean time these healthcare professionals may like to take a two day seminar with the National Catholic Bioethics Center ( : Julie Kelly) which will be held on September 9th and 10th in Philadelphia. For $325 they can get 12 credits for nursing and they can just attend for $150. Last Sunday we had the visit of God to Abraham under guise of three angels. God had an additional mission after telling him that his wife would bear a son by the next year. The mission was to destroy Sodom and Gomorrah. Two of the angels arrived at Lot s house which was on the outskirts of Sodom. When they arrived, all of Sodom s men surround the house wishing to sodomize the two angels. The other angel Who is actually God lets Abraham know of His intent to destroy the towns. Abraham senses the impending doom for the two towns and intercedes, but there are no good men in Sodom and God does not relent. It seems that Gomorrah was a town of fornication and it shows that God is very concerned about the sanctity and dignity of marriage. The two angels tell Lot to flee from his home. Abraham was unsuccessful in changing God s mind. It has to give us pause in recognizing God s actions. While He is all merciful, there is also a matter of retributive justice. God wants all of us to be saved, but He only goes so far because of our free will. There is the reality of not only Heaven, but also Hell. Jesus even reminded us that those towns that reject apostles will receive a worse punishment than Sodom. The Gospel teaches us lessons about praying. You might want to ask yourself why does God not answer all our prayers when He says He does? There is a critical understanding behind this passage. God s will must be done on Earth and in Heaven. We sometimes think that all His teachings seem to take away our free will. A careful analysis of our purpose in this life and in the next has to do with the reason why God made us, to know Him, to serve Him and to love Him. Our inclinations to do good are from God while our inclinations to do evil are from our fallen selves. Once we begin to develop virtues to counteract these human flaws, we find it easier to do God s will because we are beginning to do the purpose of why He created us. We should derive a great deal of happiness from being what He engineered us to be. It is only then that we actually recognize that we are free from the world, the flesh and the Devil. We begin to see what brings us happiness. Yes, we are made for God s purpose. He loves us and He has a plan for us that we will love once we get our lives in order- His order. God s love and mercy for the sinner are a powerful force and we pray that all those who resist His purpose will repent so that God will forgive them. In popular vernacular, we need to get with the program. The disciples must have been enamored when seeing Jesus absorbed in prayer. They made a connection with the example of John the Baptist who taught his disciples to pray. Jesus, being like us in all things but sin, had to pray just like we must pray. He must have demonstrated the absorption of John Paul II whenever he prayed before the cameras on his journeys. The reporters could not fathom his quiet conversation with Mary and God. It looked like he was actually talking to God without words. Fr. Euk Scripture Meditation "Ask and you will receive; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you." This is a promise that anyone would love to hear. With these words Jesus comforts and reassures us. He suggests that we will be satisfied and welcomed and fulfilled. His message in today's Gospel assures us that our heavenly Father loves us even more than earthly parents love their children. So we can enjoy the security of knowing that God will take good care of us. But God's care may not always look exactly the way we expect it to. His care for us is based on knowing what is best for us and what will make us flourish. And, sometimes, what we think we need isn't really best. It's important to keep this context in mind. This prevents us from understanding Jesus' words today in a selfish way. As the end of the passage makes clear, this asking and seeking that Jesus refers to is ultimately fulfilled in the gift of the Holy Spirit. Jesus is promising us that if we ask God for his Spirit, he will certainly give it to us, his children. For most of us, we actually received this gift at our baptism. But have we taken full advantage of this? Although we may not realize it at first, in receiving the Holy Spirit we actually receive a whole host of gifts. With God's Spirit come the sevenfold gifts of wisdom, understanding, counsel, knowledge, fortitude, piety, and fear of the Lord. And the fruits of the Spirit as St. Paul lists them in Galatians 5 include love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, gentleness, and selfcontrol. God knows that all of these gifts and fruits make us very well equipped for life on earth, and for eternal life in heaven! What more do we really need to ask for?

5 Ask The Pastor Ask the Pastor is not scheduled for the months of July and August. The next meeting is scheduled for Friday, September 23rd. Bishop s Anniversary Blessings 2016 All couples celebrating their 1st, 25th or 50+ wedding anniversary during the 2016 calendar year are invited to gather with family and friends to share the Eucharist, renew your sacred wedding vows, and receive Bishop O Connell s Episcopal Blessing. Anniversary couples from Ocean and Monmouth Counties may register through their parish to attend the Sunday, October 2, 2016, Mass and Blessing at 3:00 PM at St. Robert Bellarmine Parish in Freehold.
