3 Pastor s Notes There was a great deal of excitement in our parish this Easter. Again I am grateful to all those who made it possible. This was the first time we had no glitches and everything worked as it should have, except the air conditioner. I am grateful to those who are supporting the earmarked fund for that purpose. I hope more of us will contribute to the fund so we can begin the transition to a new and more energy efficient system. After Jesus resurrection He appeared to about 500 people over a period of 40 days. Jesus' glory was veiled as an ordinary man and was often unrecognized by His closest friends. His risen body was different from Lazarus raised body. Jesus glorified body has four unique qualities that we can anticipate having at the end of time. First is impassibility which means that He no longer experiences pain and inconvenience. Second is brightness or glory. Third is agility, the capability of moving with utmost quickness wherever He pleases. Finally is subtlety, which enables the body to participate fully in the soul s more perfect life. To put it into pure English, it enables the body to pass through objects. This helps us to understand how Jesus uses His sovereign freedom to appear as He wishes in the guise of a gardener or in other forms to awaken our faith. For me as a priest, one of the most impressive comments of these disciples at Emmaus is,"were not our hearts burning inside us as He talked to us on the road and explained the Scriptures to us?" I really wish that I could have been a fly on the wall to listen to this conversation. I have been blessed in my lifetime to experience similar conversations from a number of holy people who seem to put my heart on fire in our conversations. I can think of Fr. John Harden, SJ, and Cardinal Avery Dulles, SJ, who had the ability to teach the faith with sharp clarity. If only God could give us priests this ability, it would be a different world! Holy people show us how the mystery of redemption can apply to ourselves as they pass on the faith by their words and actions. First and foremost is the Cross. Suffering people show us how to grow with suffering and how to deal with anger. In the Incarnation the poverty of others links us to the poverty of Jesus and gives us the desire to share ourselves with the poor, the unemployed, single parent families, the widowed and all others in need. When we put ourselves with those, we will have the experience of true, unconditional Christian love. Fr. Euk Scripture Meditation Jesus himself drew near and walked with them, but their eyes were prevented from recognizing him. The disciples on the road to Emmaus had already heard reports about Jesus resurrection. It was at the forefront of their minds, but in spite of this, they did not recognize Jesus when he stood right before them. Why not? Perhaps because they weren t looking for him. Maybe they didn t really believe that he was alive. Or it could be that his appearance was not the same as it had been before. Whatever the case, it s very interesting to learn that it was actually while celebrating the Eucharist that these men finally realized who was right there with them! He was made known to them in the breaking of bread. Living as we do some two thousand years later, it is easy to imagine that recognizing Jesus was a snap for those who walked the earth when he did. We can run the risk of feeling sorry for ourselves that we don t get to see Jesus in person they way they did. But look here! It was through the Eucharist that Christ was made known to them, and we too have that gift right in front of us. We celebrate every week the same breaking of bread at the altar during Mass. Jesus is present with us, body, blood, soul, and divinity, even if we don t recognize him! He is there, present in our midst. If our eyes of faith are feeble, we can pray that the Lord will help us to know his presence in the Eucharist. Just as he came to comfort and accompany his first disciples, he wants to do the same for us through the Most Blessed Sacrament. We only need to be sure that we are always on the lookout to find him in our midst. This theme explores our search for true happiness, highlighting the one thing that is big enough to fill our deepest desires God himself. We will be celebrating the 100th year anniversary of Mother Mary's apparitions in Fatima. Fr. Vic will lead our Rosary procession from the church to Mother Mary's grotto by the rectory where we will crown her statue. A reception will follow in the cafeteria.
