3 Deacon s Thoughts Out of the heart come evil thoughts Our Lord points out something he wants us to notice. Christ s words to the Pharisees are very hard and challenging and the Pharisees are very upset, but these words also challenge us and force us to look into our own hearts. We must ask ourselves, Am I like the Pharisees? What Jesus is doing, he is appealing to us to be on our guard against compliance with ritual. If we keep our worship of God in true focus we must therefore call attention to what we are doing. Jesus is telling us that while man looks to appearances, God looks to the heart and cannot be deceived. He is telling us that our innermost thoughts as well as our outward actions must stand up to God s scrutiny. We are to continuously seek out what God wants of us and what is he asking us to do, purifying the way we live and practicing our faith. It is easy for our prayer life and Mass to sink into emptiness, heartless and be without love. Can we be one of those that have their faith tucked on the shelf and only taken down on Sunday mornings and thereafter placed back? Some of us surely have the practice of doing just that. Our faith filled with the Holy Spirit is a gift which is to be reused again and again and not left on the shelf for special occasions. Remember, the Sacrament of the Eucharist is a wonderful experience and a gift of love, provided we are striving to become more like Christ in our daily lives. When we walk up the aisle for communion, carrying our crosses, we are walking to Jesus. What we do in our parish, meetings, gatherings, etc. does not necessarily make us good Catholics. Joined hands does not substitute for sincere prayer coming from the heart. It is very easy to depart from God s will and appear religious at the same time, but lip service falls short of our worship. Our worship is meaningless unless it proceeds from a sincere spirit fill heart. We all need to be more then Sunday Christians, the love of God must flow into our daily lives, the workplace and the world around us. Which do you think is more important to God, having clean hands or having a clean mind and heart? Do you believe that God s love can change your heart? Only God has the power to change our hearts and make them clean through the power of the Holy Spirit. Deacon Gino Scripture Meditation "Nothing that enters one from outside can defile that person; but the things that come out from within are what defile." In the days of Jesus, this issue was about performing empty external rituals of cleanliness instead of purifying the heart. For most of us, the issue is probably a bit different. Our fixation on externals is not so much with religious prescriptions and practices; instead, our daily obsession tends to be with appearances in general. In our media-saturated culture, we are extremely tuned in to how things look. We are trained to respond to current fashion trends in clothing, hair, makeup, and accessories. Even bodies, cars, houses, and landscaping all fall into the realm of highly marketed images. The risk for us is to be so concerned with having the right "look" on the outside that we fail to consider what's happening on the inside. Life is about more than what we have or what we parade around for others to see. As human beings we are a unity of body and soul, and if we neglect our souls, then we are neglecting the fulfillment of our human nature. We need to make sure we are not like the Pharisees in today's reading who were too concerned with outside appearances. Jesus tells us in response to them that "from within people, from their hearts, come evil thoughts, unchastity, theft, murder, adultery, greed, malice, deceit, licentiousness, envy, blasphemy, arrogance, folly. All these evils come from within and they defile." This list makes a good starting point for some personal meditation on our interior life. Let's ask ourselves, "Which of the behaviors on this list threaten to defile my soul?" Then, let's ask the Holy Spirit to help purify us of that spiritual ugliness so we can appear beautiful in the sight of God.

Divine Mercy Due to the Labor day weekend, there will be no Divine Mercy Devotions on Sept. 6th. We will resume on Oct. 4th. Pray for Peace Silence. Lights dimmed. Candles flickering. All are invited to experience the chants of Taizé as we gather to pray for peace in the world and peace in our hearts through scripture, meditative singing (short refrains, repeated over and over), and silence. 5 Rosary Making Ministry Thank you. Many thanks to all who have contributed to our rosary making efforts. To date we have made over 6,500 rosaries which have been distributed locally to hospitals, nursing homes and students and have also been sent all over the world to countries like Nigeria, Kenya, Sierra Leone, the Philippines, India and Jamaica. Starting in September we will be making rosaries on the first Friday of every month in the school cafeteria at 3:30 PM. You are invited to join us. Rosary making counts as service hours for confirmation preparation, and often for high school service. We also need help from those who can string rosaries from home. No experience necessary.
